ET: Escape from Landfill Director's Cut Limited Collector's Edition

TBH, how many of the people you know (aside from those you may share very similar interests with) are using physical media more than streaming?

I'm in my late 40's and everybody I know buys physical, even a couple of people I know that get netflix. Because netflix here doesn't have everything, no service does.

At work we sell DVDs like hotcakes, people are constantly asking if we have more stashed out the back and can we bring out more.
These are not all old people, they're poor people.
People rarely ask about VHS tapes, vinyl etc which are the things that collectors are after.

Cash Converters doesn't sell DVD now but they sell used BD, they move heaps.

JB Hi-Fi sells DVD, BD (also 4k) and CD. You don't see many people looking at CD now and less are looking at new DVD, but the aisles are fairly narrow so people are always getting in the way of each other looking at BD.

Generally people don't like streaming around here because you would need to spend like $100aud per month for internet (even spending that doesn't guarantee your connection will be solid enough to deal with a bunch of teenager users) and then probably pay for at least 2 services, plus if you have kids you'll be paying for extra stuff like Xbox Live or PSN...and in some cases both of those examples.

Digital services for movies/tv shows are like video games that require online. The people that are pushing this s**t are convinced every single person in the world can use it but that isn't true.

A couple of irl examples I can think of when digital services were a fail...
Girl at work said The 100 latest episodes weren't available yet, another guy was pirating them because that was the only way to keep current (otherwise he'd spend all his time trying to avoid spoilers online) - this was some time ago though, maybe a year.

A friend at work has been catching up on Star Wars stuff, at the moment it's Rebels series but not all seasons are available (can't remember which service he uses but it's just one service iirc).

If it's the same story as the D750 (which is the same as D701) there might be a voltage switch on the back for US/JPN and UK/AU voltages...The D701 doesn't have that switch afaik. Those two units share the same user manual.

Also, if it's NTSC only that should be printed on the back of the unit somewhere.

Yes, please upload any manuals missing in the hardware database :) I still need D701/D750 user and service manuals :(

Please send the bigger version, I'll realign/crop/filter if needed.

For big files, you can drop them in my cloud following the steps here:

Make sure to zip them with meaningful filenames and/or a little text file for describing which #LDDB you are uploading them for!

I uploaded (to your cloud) front, back & insert pics for Alien (1979) [PILF-1237]
File is Alien PILF-1237 - lddb deadlegion.7z
Please let me know if they're too terrible to use, that's about the best I can do at the moment.

I also did an edit for some info about Heroes: Season 1 (2006) [825 244 4] but I won't submit pics for that HD DVD box set right now as I don't have a scanner to do it properly.

When I've checked stuff I have in my collection I see prices well above what I've paid. In fact with some titles even if I were to get 50% off the cheapest available it would still be more than what I've paid.

As far as I know I don't have anything considered rare.

It's curious to see low posters suddenly appear in this topic.
I would be interested in knowing how many of the no voters are sellers :P

I've got a 32" Trinitron I forget which model now but it isn't HD. 4:3, has component and s-video.
I rarely use it because it sucks up a fair amount of power.

Might be getting too political here but if we really want to turn things around we need to go back to old policies of heavily taxing the ultra wealthy. I have no problem paying sales tax but if we want to invoke real change that is what we need.

Yes, the capitalist system generally doesn't tax the ultra wealthy enough. Reason is obvious: people with crazy amounts of money affect policies. If they aren't actually making the decisions about tax directly then they know the people that are.

Executive salaries + bonuses are the craziest thing that goes on tbh. Bonuses in particular are completely out of hand now, execs basically always get them even if the company is under performing...because other companies do it so it's "not fair" if some guy/girl misses out on that

Had a quick look and apparently you need region free firmware, stock firmware doesn't have region select.
After flashing the firmware, every time the player is turned on you may need to change the region depending on what disc you want to play. That is to say the region you select will reset when turning the unit off.

There are always problems using phones on websites even today, adding attachments or trying to click on attachments (to download) are very common regardless of what software the site is using. They aren't really bugs as such, websites would need to be setup to accommodate phone users and their lack of tools. So it's basically more work for site server(s) just because people want convenience (I could say lazy but that would probably offend and that's not my intention).

Some people at my work try using their phone to look up things on ebay or whatever but the interface is gimped so imo it's just a waste of time.

Resizing uploaded image attachments internally is possible though, some websites do it.
A site I've been on for years will resize an image you upload as an attachment from your PC (never tested via phone so idk), but that site uses vBulletin. It won't resize if you upload from another website though, it just fails saying the image is too large.

I think it's definitely possible to be curious but have no serious interest in collecting. I'm like that about a lot of things tbh
Comes down to money and space.

LOTR CGI was cutting edge for the time. All effects look bad after a while.

I see Kevin Smith was mentioned

I'm not defending Jackson or CGI at all.
2001 is a great movie but you can see some dated effects there, nothing you can really do about that except maybe swap in some enhancements (I could give examples of that but I'm sure most members are aware of many anyway) but then it isn't the original film anymore.

I like watching old movies and tv shows, but I also don't mind some newer stuff.
You're problem is that you simply write off everything new as being s**t even if you haven't bothered watching it.

LD is designed for 4:3 screens for the most part, but there are some "squeeze" versions...I'm not sure how many titles are available like that though.

If you stretch a 4:3 image (which is actually 16:9 or whatever with bars top and bottom) horizontally to fill a 16:9 screen the AR will be wrong. You're just stretching things sideways.
People were doing that crap all the time in the early days of widescreen tv's, they'd stretch everything (4:3 broadcasts and DVD, also VHS) to fill the screen

This is amazing that I have read this from so many different selling site but Ebay and Reverb have none.
Don't think I've received a message from discogs either.

I guess that just shows how professional they are.

Ebay probably doesn't feel the need to do anything as sellers can put up a notification on their listings themselves.
"Seller is away until *insert date here*".

Not all countries are affected, I received packages from Japan and China last week, all domestic mail is still functioning here atm (most recent package was yesterday). Haven't seen any delays yet.

Aren't the DVDs entirely in widescreen?

Yes, but the cgi scenes are resized down to widescreen as they were 4:3 originally.
The whole show was done in widescreen afaik (super 35mm I think) but the cgi is only 4:3.
Original broadcasts were all 4:3.

I know a lot of people (probably most) don't care, but I'd like to see a definitive version of the show made much like the TOS enhanced versions, although it doesn't matter if the CGI isn't updated (enhanced) or any other extensive work imo. The main thing would be to use the best source and then have full versions of whatever frames are available.

What I mean is; on TOS enhanced you can select original or enhanced SFX scenes.
For B5 you basically have the whole thing in widescreen with original (4:3) or resized (16:9) CGI options.

Apparently there is an archival version of the complete show, cgi and all, on 35mm but it's the broadcast version (all 4:3).

Definitely not cut in the UK:

From that page you linked to, under details>remarks
This film was originally seen by the BBFC in an unfinished version, for advice as to the film's suitability at '12A'. The BBFC advised the company that the torture scene placed too much emphasis on both the infliction of pain and the sadism of the villain for the requested '12A' category. When the completed version of the film was submitted for classification, reductions to the torture sequence had been made, including the removal of lingering shots of the rope, close shots of Bond's facial reaction and the substitution of a more distant shot of the beating compared to the original version. This re-edited version of the scene was considered acceptable at '12A', where the Guidelines permit violence provided there is no dwelling on detail or emphasis on injuries.

So yeah, as I thought. The initial UK version had the torture scene partially cut down so it could get a 12 certificate. The 2012 release, which has 15 certificate, is uncut.

US initial version had cuts to get a PG-13 rating but maybe not that torture scene, there were cuts to some fights. This cut version was used for DVD/BD releases.

German initial version has at least one tiny cut, although the DVD might be uncut idk.

Chinese version has a lot of violence cut out including torture.

The Australian version has always been uncut afaik, some other countries probably always got that same original version (which was available on UK BD in 2012).

If you use a PC PSU remember you will need to make an on/off switch for it.
Should be green (power on) and black (ground) wires on the ATX plug.

The smaller form factor PC's will have a PSU shaped more like a small brick instead of a huge box, these generally have lower rating but should be fine for your purpose (think it's unlikely you will need 200w).

The thing about most British comedy (not all mind you) is that it isn't just plain old fashioned race hate. It uses those racist stereotypes etc to make fun of the whole thing, the racists in particular are usually portrayed as being stupid and ignorant.
