If its working its one of the best players ever made 8-)

Sorry I just feel that way about working players now, there have been a lot of broken questions here recently.

Maybe a lower quality player for the age but if you have all the scalers etc you will or should get a nice image.

I'm just excited to upgrade from my Denon player I've had since I started collecting.

It should be here in a couple weeks, but hopefully it works. At the very least I can use it as a travel model.

Finally a Laserdisc without a ton of rot.

I present "How to Test the 1981 M.C.U System".

Man that is an awesome setup, very cool.

I'm stuck with my Denon LA-2100 hooked up to a Samsung Soundbar/subwoofer.

Hopefully buying a house later this year and I can finally start working on a theater room with actual surround sound. I constantly see retro Pioneer sound systems on my local Craigslist and FB Marketplace for cheap, I just don't have the space right now.

Last one of the batch I did last week, Cylinder Head Service.

8:29 - 8:55 had me laughing my a** off. Something about seeing all those "you got the right answer" things in a row is just funny to me.

Yeah, you got me, it's Traci Lords, Talk Dirty to Me 3.

I did see some blank recordable discs on ebay about a year ago. The listing had 3-5 RLV's, some written, some blank, I tried to bid over $50, but got outbid at last minute, have not seen any RLV on ebay since.

I just bought a 3M disc, I believe those were made to order laserdiscs, this one reads:
JTLS/SOUTHCOM on the back
The only info I can find on JTLS is some Joint Theater Level Simulator for the Southcom defense of US.

I think it is just a way of storing or displaying a background for a large simulation system. I did some searching on the web and eventually came across some text in a document that suggests that laserdiscs were used in this simulation system to provide like perhaps a background map.

The disc is still sealed, some I am just gonna open it and see what it is.

Also, I have Dario Argento's World of Horror GOLD laserdisc, it is not so rare, but really cool.

I guess my reason for this forum is just to start the dialogue, I am so curious about the rare titles out there.

Yeah, the 3M sleeves are usually made to order discs, I have a few in my collection from PSA Airlines, and cosmetic companies, as well as ones used in a Nasa Exhibit.

I understand you were just trying to start a conversation, but coming in here bragging about how much money laserdiscs have made you isn't the best choice when the community here are mainly collectors and enthusiasts who don't like people inflating the price of Laserdiscs more than they already have been.

I made a similar mistake when I joined the website, I hope you manage to find your little niche here and hopefully engage in some more constructive dialogue. :)

Also, please if you can get some footage of that 3M disk up, I remember someone having something like that for sale in Florida a few months ago but he wasn't interested in selling or digitizing (I think I saw him on reddit and offered to digitize it myself?).

Hey welcome to the site!

Hopefully you find a nice player soon, it'd be maddening to have all those LD's laying around without a way to watch 'em.

Uh so I'm a moron.

One of my RLV Discs actually has content on it, I will have it uploaded in the next 24 hours.

I'm going to test the other one shortly, but apparently I'm a dolt and forgot to fast forward the entire LD (as the content doesn't start until around frame 8,000 or so).

Also to answer your question, when I try to play the reverse side my player just gives me a "no disc" message and doesn't do anything.

Disc ends at frame "52200" on the dot.

Disc is Mono, first track being the actual audio, second being a terrible screeching sound.

And the other one also has content, I don't know why the hell I didn't check past 8000 frames or so, I've been thinking both of these were blank since last year

I posted that because I believe if RLVs show video of any sort, they are not blank. Essentially, the special dye-containing layer either has a signal on it or it doesn't. So I'm glad you took another look!

It might have been common to pad the start of the disc in an effort to reduce noise or when the customer wanted the disc to start at a specific frame. (https://web.archive.org/web/19991104040223/http://www.laserdisc-recording.com/infoguide.html)

Huh very interesting! Thank you so much for the tip!

Both discs are now digitized, I'll be uploading them tonight hopefully. I have to go ahead and cut out the empty bits first but that shouldn't take too long.

This is a fun one. I found out yesterday that my RLV Discs weren't actually blank, here is the content of the first one, I'll have the other up on this thread in a day or two as I have to rerecord it due to accidentally recording the wrong audio track.

Anyhow this RLV disc is about the PictureTel corporation and a VERY EARLY form of Video conferencing, I believe this is from 97-98' going off of the "LMLT" mentioned in the video.

On any of these discs, is there anything etched into the disc just outside of the label?

I don't see anything on either of them.

Thanks. I was wondering on the recorded side based on https://www.instructables.com/id/how-to-polish-out-scratches-on-laser-discs/ - It looks like the LVDR 610A might have been able to write text into the disc.

Also on a side note: in that Instructable, the author is polishing that RLV. These discs are hollow on the inside and should only be handled by the edges, so I wouldn't be surprised if he damaged it.

Gotcha, yes there is something there but it is extremely hard to see. I will attempt to take a picture of it, but my camera is having a hard time with how shiny the disc is.

Edit: Got it, it's got the name of the video etched into it, only on one spot the rest of the ring does not have any etching.

The photo should show what I'm talking about, you may have to zoom in.

This is on the disc that I've uploaded, that had the handwritten "old" on it. The newer one from 99' does not have any sort of etching.

The second RLV is up, this one is from 1999.

One thing of note is that the audio track on this one was only on 2(R), first time I've seen that, and it's the reason why I had to rerecord it.

Also; only half of the video has any sort of audio on it, the second half has nothing on either audio track.

This, along with the fact it doesn't contain the laser-etched title on the data side leads me to the conclusion this project wasn't finished or this was a rough cut of sorts.

Good, informative vid.

Also, I can never quite understand when I see a comment like "well, it looks fine and is good enough for me".
You've been shown the right way to do it but insist on digging your heels in.

People hate to admit when their wrong, people are far too prideful for their own good.

My dad was like that, guy refused to buy widescreen releases on DVD, would only buy fullscreen ones. Watching Star Wars in the correct aspect ratio for the first time and without the special edition changes was fantastic.

Guy was serious about his surround sound setup though, I'd love to have those old receivers.

Edit: I called him up and he has all his old surround sound stuff in the garage, he said I'm welcome to any of it, so that's going to be fun.

The whole Phantasm series is great while high, it might be the only way to understand the fourth film as well.

It has been, and always will be my favorite horror franchise, and it's something else to watch it while high on edibles (or if you want a really fun time, mushrooms).

Edit: Just saw you wer asking for Comedies, whoops. Phantasm 3 sorta has Evil Dead 2 vibes, but I wouldn't call any of them comedies.

Aaaand we're back.

Been a little busy with trying to purchase my first home (even sold off one of my RLV's, and about 200 bulk laserdiscs to help with the process) but here we are with another Ford Laserdisc.
