Post subject: Re: Akira 4K Remaster
Posted: 07 Jun 2020, 18:41

Akira was supposed to be animated for 70mm but the budget did not allow it. So it was animated in 35mm and the 70mm was just a blowup of the 35mm version with a 6 track sound mix in Dolby Stereo.

It is not all that strange a practice either because Final Yamato also had a 70mm version and that was done on 35mm also. Although 70mm prints for anime are rather rare.

as for the 4K UHD disc there is a noticeable amount of noise reduction. Being scanned directly from the negative it should have natural film grain. Not in the amount you would get with a 35mm release print or 70mm blowup, but it should not look like it was animated on a computer or in cgi.

It is such a disappointment because the 4K has nicer colors and better overall definition but they had to degrain it to the point of the blu ray being preferable.

I got Temple of Doom and Last Crusade Hong Kong Laserdisc releases. I haven't watched them yet, i think they are Cantonese hardsubbed and English audio in pan and scan format.

I also got Bubblegum Crash volume 1 Illegal Army with no OBI. Japanese edition. I do have the US release and always found the video transfer wanting.

I also just bought and don't have in my hands yet Temple of Doom Korean Laserdisc.

Star Wars Trilogy Definitive Collection with the making of trilogy. Japan laserdisc set.

I finally recently got my Temple of Doom disc in and its very beautiful the cover is immaculate. No corner dings, no scratches on the disc. Minor rot. Its the Korean release the seller said it was from 1993 and its CIC Video. Before the ultimate of Star Wars sets it was my crown jewel.

I put on Urusei Yatsura Beautiful Dreamer. The last pressing of the 4:3 master on Laserdisc. The transfer is not that good. You know some of the late issue laserdiscs look as good as DVD sometimes this one looks like an obvious old tape source. I'm glad to have it don't get me wrong because i don't have the Japanese VHS. Audio is mono and not good at all full of hiss.

Somehow the Letterbox LD, 16:9 anamorphic DVD and Blu-ray from Japan all came from a remastered source. If the film was composed at 4:3 why hasn't TOHO remastered it?

Somebody must enjoy it because they do have subscribers and sell Blu-Ray's but Disco to me is the worst Star Trek series ever, and season 5 hasn't changed that opinion its only cemented it.

American Graffiti Signature Collection US set, its a little too bright in some scenes and a little dark in others. But it is easily the best looking release of this film on laserdisc. Too bad about the changed credits and cgi sunset but i can live with it.

Indiana Jones The Last Crusade, Letterbox Japan pressing from the set but loose. No obi, it was 6 bucks. For me this completes the trilogy because i have Letterbox Temple of Doom i picked up for 12 dollars on Mercari with no obi, and i have Raiders rental copy laserdisc in Letterbox with obi which was 24 dollars. Which was sealed until i opened it.

I also just purchased the rental copy of Dr No, no OBI. A bit pricy 24 dollars, I probably could have haggled but I didn't feel like it. Weird cover art. Musical notes behind James Bond and Honey Ryder tiny in the image, must be the Japanese theatrical poster.

I'd like someday to get Symphonic Suite Yamato Laserdisc, as well as Symphonic Dragon Quest, and The Neon Genesis Evangelion Symphony and the Tenchi Muyo concert. I do have the Bubblegum Crisis music laserdisc with the singer actress of Priss performing the series music.

The 2000 Japanese Pressing of the Star Wars trilogy Special Edition. No Obi.

Quite expensive, I have no idea why it was a hundred dollars. It was the one set I didn't have.

Now I have all the Japanese releases except for the Analog audio release of From Star Wars to Jedi, and I don't have The Ewok Adventure or The Battle for Endor.

Don't need the stand alone making of trilogy releases because they were packed in the 1995 set.

I only have the first Japanese pressing with no digital audio. The picture quality is reasonable but not revelatory. It is a sample pressing. The reissue with digital goes for way more. More than I am willing to spend.

The Japanese will have subs, not sure if that will make or break anything for you.
I would check and get whichever has the digital audio, since this is the only reason you would buy such a title.

I had the USA one years ago and it was fine without any issues, but that was when it was selling for over 50 bucks and I couldn't resist to cash in.
Now I'm sure its dirt cheap as its been released on DVD and maybe Bluray, I'm too lazy to see the BR.

The Kino blu-ray goes for insane money and is long out of print that was why i bought the Japan laserdisc for cheap. I'm not spending 70 dollars and up for a blu-ray disc.

I do buy lots and sometimes there are horrible movies in there. I also probably have a terrible taste in movies or am nostalgic for really bad 1990s movies tied to a specific memory.

You remember where you were when you went to the cinema to see it and who you saw it with, and even having fun with awful movies that today you wouldn't rent or bother to go see, because in those days there was nothing to do and few choices, also ticket prices were cheap.

I hope you didn't pay a lot. Factory sealed is meaningless I opened a factory sealed Last Crusade first issue from Japan that was deadstock rotted and doa. At least I didn't pay a whole lot. If its sealed and a seller sells it to you its buyer beware, they don't have to honor a rotten sealed disc because it comes untested and as is.

Even the good episodes of the series are just remakes of, or riffing on old episodes like Balance of terror, or City on the Edge of Forever. The episode where they murdered the Klingon ambassador was truly shockingly not Star Trek. Chapel would never have done that, and it doesn't deepen M'Benga as a character it makes him questionable. Yes, the guy was a war criminal, but it was just really off for Star Trek.

So was making the Gorn into evil aliens for fodder to be killed, TOS had the Horta, its again not Star Trek or its values. They aren't the Borg and it's not the Alien franchise or Xenomorphs.

I do for a few but not twilight. I had nostalgia for lord of the rings and Matrix, as in had. They wore it out by doing it way too much or making unneeded sequels. I'm so beyond Tolkien and Hobbit everything i'm still burned out on that stuff especially after the Hobbit trilogy. I'm nearly there on Game of Thrones or the mere mention of it.

Have a total love/hate relationship with the Star Wars prequels I only liked parts of Phantom Menace and the Last third of Revenge of the Sith. I utterly loathe and despise Disney Star Wars I don't think if I am alive in 20 years I will be nostalgic for them.

I have the Blu-Ray disc. What you don't think I have the DVD or Blu-Ray, its Ghibli. Tomorrow if there was a 4K I'd buy it but it would be an upscale.

Films that are expressly made to be shown on 35mm film, I don't have a 35mm projector in my living room. So, should I just go and throw out all my blu-rays and 4k discs? I'm being facetious but it tracks.

Indiana Jones sounds great on the THX demo, sadly those discs never were released, they skipped a format generation and ended up on DVD. and Lowry got their hands on the masters, now they aren't as bad as I once thought they were but they were DNR'ed. The 4K was a major leap in quality but no original audio and recomposited effects. So for everything that gets fixed or improved there is a step backward. At least they fixed the color grade on Raiders so everyone doesn't look like they have a sunburn. And on Crystal Skull the sickly green tint is gone.

And there is plenty of grain on the Indy films on 4k disc and Willow 4k on Disney plus, even if there are compression issues in places on INDY. Neither of them was destroyed like the 4k of American Graffiti that some people would like to be recalled and to have a non DNR copy issued.

I did watch Princess Half-Demon and it wasn't as good as Inuyasha. I also watched the remake of Urusei Yatsura and didn't like it.

Wondering if the remake of Ranma will be any different, or will I be disappointed again. I mean I do like the remake of Spice and Wolf, yeah it doesn't hit that nostalgia, and the music isn't as good but it's a fine series.

Added 4 different Dirty Pair Laserdiscs from the TV series. With OBI still in Shrink not sealed. Plus Star Trek II the Wrath of Khan first issue Analog audio only with OBI.

I love retro stuff, I love the art on the covers that look like vinyl record albums.

I like original audio, Anime from Japan is super awesome on Laserdisc.

Also the Star Wars movies that George Lucas will never ever allow to be released ever again, in their best legally available to purchase option in the Definitive collection. Along with the best presentation of THX 1138 and American Graffiti.

The Star Trek films sound phenomenal as well and the original audio of those hasn't been heard after 2009 when the original blu-ray discs were released.

I also really, really love my Criterions. All look great and sound great except for Ghostbusters, which is rotted on CAV. I still need the CLV.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Japanese Blu-Ray. Incredibly Beautiful animation. I was so enthused by watching it, I decided to read the Manga again.

So far of all the Ghibli Blu Ray's I've purchased from Japan I've been blown away by every single one in terms of picture quality.

I'd recommend avoiding the Ghostbusters CAV mine was so rotted it was ridiculous.

You pay a premium for that and the supplements aren't really all that great. Though I do like the gatefold cover and cardstock.

The James Bond I wouldn't recommend against if you can get them cheap. The problem is they want to overcharge for it being a so-called recalled release and they aren't rare at all.

I don't have the Rock or Robocop. The CAV for Robo is super expensive all the time for a non beat up cover.

I was thinking of Alien 3 myself and whether or not it's worth it to just get the Blu-ray boxed set of the Alien films or to get Saga laserdisc set with AC3 audio and with THX certification. The single for Alien 3 on Ac-3 is going for more than a boxed set I wonder if someone is little crazy with their pricing.
