Thanks for adding that to the DB. I was thinking it would make more sense if it was CAV.

Are there any places I should look first for more feedback? The RF TP? If so, what should I look for on a scope/DMM?
Look at focus error.

Should I look at the parts on the head assembly? Perhaps Q7 and/or the NJM2904M could be suspect?
Q122 feeds Q7 so start there.

I am conditioned to shotgun replace capacitors. Should I look into replacing the caps on the SRVD PCBA?
Need to figure out root cause first.

I have not been able to check PSU voltages when the laser is trying to read the disc, only when the player is idle. Could there be PSU issues at play here?
Not sure, but that would be the easy fix.

What's your opinion of the 1N4695 as a substitute for the HZS9.1NB2 ? It looks like the leads are a little wider in diameter but I'm not sure I have a choice here.
Given that this is in such a sensitive path and this is the best player ever made, I would really try to buy the original. Due to MOQ the cheapest you could get (a ton for) is about $50 + shipping.
https://octopart.com/search?q=HZS9.1NB2&currency=USD&specs=0

Listed at this site too- but this company always says they have parts that they don't: https://instrumentalparts.com/diode-hzs9-1nb2/

In regards to the 1N4695, I don't know enough to know if that is an appropriate replacement. Vz looks fine, but no idea on reverse current and resistance. You might could ask on an EE forum.

40 years in Japan!

Just remembered yesterday (when I sold my Elton John: In Central Park (1980) (Uncut) [MP026-25DO] ) that the first round of commercial Pioneer LD releases in Japan happened on October 9th, 1981 .

Even Pioneer acknowledged this:

One week to go but, amazingly, except for an an Analog-CX soundtrack a little harsh when the microphones saturate, it is still playing fine with no laser rot!!

Good luck playing VHS tapes or even DVDs 40 years after their relesases.
I'm not even mentioning HD DVD (for obvious reasons).
If we have the birth date, we also know the retirement date: January 14th, 2009

お誕生日おめでとう、レーザーディスク!

I PMd publius earlier this summer and got a link to his archive (here) . It is 90MB and not sorted. He also linked a couple of seperate archives for Ghibli movies and Mobile Suit Gundam . This big archive contain subtitles for just a small portion of the anime available. Some are incomplete or won't convert in SubStationAlpha.

Apologies for resurrecting a long dead conversation, but after noticing those links were broken I went on an mini archeological dig and believe I found them. I dunno who else would be looking for such a thing in 2022, but maybe it'll help someone.

Briefly owned, and flipped on Ebay, one of these players, with a disc in in back in August of 2005. Have e-mailed the pictures from my archive to Julien, sadly I didn't take pictures of the disc, but I do have the details of what the disc was thanks to my meticulous attention to providing detailed item descriptions. Relevant excerpt from my circa August 2005 Ebay listing description.:

The disc in the unit is labeled: Sony HDVS HDP-2347 [NOT FOR SALE]
MIDLAND PRODUCTIONS SEAWORLD OF FLORIDA "WILD ARTIC", Made in Japan . Disc has alot of scratches
on it, which for the most part appear to have been caused by some dust/debris that was caught on
the felt pads of the tray.

I was experimenting with the RS422 system control port on the Panasonic TU-AHD100 , and made a simple util to control it from a PC.
Well, it works for me, and thought others may find it useful or at least fun. Of course you'll need some simple HW to interface your PC with RS422.

Something like this:

You can find it on github, here .

I knew you would have some inputs on the 3D replay characteristics :-)

Also, I have playlist for every unique format on my channel page including HDVS discs. No need to search. :)

Yep, already mentioned above!

You can see a lot of HDVS demo discs here => https://www.youtube.com/@ReelyInteresting/search?query=hdvs
