 Post subject: Re: DVL-H9 ?

I owned a dvl-h9 a few years ago...

It was the best combi unit I've ever seen in action.
Picture quality was stunning for LD. Comb filter was indeed a big +
Dvd playback was ok. nothing spectacular .

It has an ac-3rf output! You do need a demodulator!
I sold it since spare parts would not be easy to get (living in Europe that is) if it broke down one day...
Living in Europe it wasn't the best buy for me since it's limited to ntsc only.
I remember the power cable being very thick. not easy to put away in a rack.
I own several ld players and at the time it was as High end I could get regarding a player but it was of no use to me as main player. Ntsc only...
It would be a shame to put in a closset so I sold it .

If ntsc playback is what you need I'd say GO FOR IT. You won't regret it

I know this is a very old post, but I have to tell you guys, the DVL-H9 is by far one of the best LD players I ever owned, amazing colors and a fantastic comb filter. It was better than the S9 as there was no smear, and having owned a RG7, H9 and X9, the H9 is truly in the top tier league, regardless of it being a combo player.

There is no "Inhibit Switch for NTSC" or "NTSC enabled Switch" inside the Commander.
The thing to do is close contact W142 and open contact W142 on the Mainboard.
After that playing NTSC Laserdisc's ist possible :D

That's a nice hack, congrats!!

This has been raised before: Barcode - UPC scan of LD collection Help please

If you can get a list of barcodes, then you can simply use the bulk matching/searching: https://www.lddb.com/bulk.php

After building your collection on LDDb, you can export it.

How about this software?

http://www.dvdregister.com/

I've been using it since the late 1990's to catalog Laserdiscs and DVDs. You can use an old CueCat barcode scanner for entry of a title. Only works with USA releases, other countries you have to add in manually...

I have one of these, the LC-V200 version (NTSC native). Now you need to modify it to output AC3 and digital audio. I successfully modified mine to output both. It's currently direct wired to the VAPB board and it outputs at the back using some donor boards from other players. I made daughter boards to clean it up the VAPB, just need to get the two chips removed and sockets soldered in. You can grab AC3 without the extra circuitry on my daughter board, it was just easier to duplicate the circuit off the IC vs running jumper wires all over the VAPB board.

Would also love to see detailed pictures of the VAPB board (the board that has the service RCA port) on your LC-V100. Curious if it is any different than the V200 version, a lot of unpopulated pcb on mine.

Really late to the party on this one. I think a lot of the high price of certain discs relates to the authenticity of the film itself. I for one enjoy hearing and seeing SW Episode 1 in its original form before Lucas waved his magic fingers and modified it to make it “better looking and sounding”. Look at what Cameron has done with all his latest new enhanced releases. DNR’rd to where it’s unwatchable, new Dolby Atmos mix on a film that’s 30+ years old. Are you serious!

I for one am Gen-X and never had the means to own LD back in the 90’s. I think a lot of us are hitting that age where things we couldn’t experience back then but wanted to, now have the means to do so. Is it stupid to spend $100 on a LD, of course it is. So is spending $50Grand on a vehicle but plenty do it. Or buying that coffee every other day for $5.

I won’t call anyone stupid for spending $X amount on a LD. If you get enjoyment out of it, awesome! Some discs I paid more than what I’d like to admit. But my wife I get so much enjoyment when watching those films that’s it’s well worth the cost because we look forward to LD movie night. Going to theater now a days you’ll drop $65 with 2 tickets, popcorn/soda and candy. All for a mediocre film that’s been rehashed over and over again.

The PD0052 ic is a pretty nice chip, it outputs the digital signal natively from pin 6. But on the autochanger PCB PD0052 pin 6 has no traces coming from it. Before I made the daughter PCB I simply had a jumper wire soldered directly to pin 6 but it wasn't a very clean setup. The PD0052 also can trigger an LED to indicate what type of audio it is outputting, so for fun I ran a 44.1k and a 48k led indicator.

For the AC3 pcb it duplicates the existing circuit found on the autochanger. You could simply jumper off a transistor to grab the AC3 signal (similar to the digital audio) which is what I did originally. But there are also other circuits you have to grab such as mute and +/-5v so the jumper wires start to become messy.

On the back of the machine above the left/right audio and video output I added original pioneer daughterboards which came from other pioneer laserdisc players. The AC3B board comes from a CLD-S315 and the Digital COXB board comes from a CLD-D702. The CLD-D702 COXB board doesn't natively have an optical out port but the unpopulated circuit is there to add it, so I did that as well. I used these boards because they already have nice mounting brackets attached to the PCB's and they are technically original pioneer parts, but sourcing these isn't necessary if you want to build your own pcb's for output (they are very basic circuits).

You will also need to make your own wiring harness to get the signals from the front of the unit to the back. I managed to find some wire that very closely matched the existing wire, so in the picture I posted don't confuse those wires to be original. You can easily take the side panel off to route the wires, don't waste your time like I did trying to run them with it on.

I am also working on a video signal circuit bypass. If you output your video from the command unit the video signal will have gone through two separate on-screen display chips, degrading the signal. The first one is onboard the autochanger unit for the diagnostic OSD (which is more difficult to bypass) and the second is in the commander. I currently take video directly from the back of the autochanger, but it still gets processed through the diagnostic OSD chip. I want to make a bypass board to take the video directly from the BU4053B multiplexer and output it directly to the back of the autochanger, bypassing the diagnostic port ODS IC. The diagnostic port would still function as intended this way, but the video would be as clean as you can possibly get from the autochanger. I would advise to only use audio/video out from the back of the autochanger and not connect those to the commander to then output to your tv/sound system.

Read all the threads about the DVL-909/919/91 US models. This is a common issue with DVL units. I was told by a trained Pioneer repairman that Pioneer Engineers discovered they received a lot shipment of the guide rails for the later DVL players that have a slight warp being the main cause of this. I have also found that the top movement track does not have the same force downward as previous models and the extension toward the spindle motor does not have the support of previous models which results in the slight warp keeping the laser from moving in step mode for playback. I have used upper guide rails from the DVL-700/90 series to put into these units and they work fine. Others have reported they adjust the spindle motor off center a little and the angle of the laser movement gear against the upper track allows for a little more contact to move the laser. You could also try a good cleaning of the upper guide rail and re-grease with the white lithium grease, that may work in your case.

I'd just remove the top metal plate for side B laser movement from the parts machine with the rail on it and swap it with the one in the H9. All DVL players have the same part.

This also sounds similar to the centering issue I was having with my 919:
