US release of T2 in widescreen is the longest unrated version so this must be the #1 to pick I think  :?:
I have T2 the THX Japanese version, I like this a lot.

BTW :?:
On both DVD and blu-ray did T1 get fake stereo audio or is it mono audio :?:

Thanks for the info about the T2 ld.

Is this the

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) [PILF-2554]

the version you have and like?

About T1. Most modern-day releases of T1 have just the new 5.1 mix in the Pal territory. In Europe, we have never received original audio on digital discs.

You have more ways to get the original audio in Region 1.

The mgm special edition dvd of 2001 has it. And at least according to the package you also have it on the DVD Release of Terminator 1 from 2015.

The MGM T1 dvd version is the best sounding and best looking release on all modern formats, not including the mentioned proper laserdisc releases. The later dvd/blu-ray/4k releases either had different sound remixes or excessive dnr done on the film. I just watched the 2001 mgm version and enjoyed it immensely, I need to rewatch the pilf-2992 version but from what I’ve read, the mgm dvd is sourced from the laserdisc so they should look and sound pretty identical.

I could be wrong as I’m a fairly newbie in the LD world.

Great suggestion and I did not try that. I will tomorrow or Saturday and report back.

Edit, just tried cause Netflix can wait. Surprised that It did play when side 1 was flipped to side B but froze after 44 seconds.

At this point I’m convinced that it’s the disc because it’s the only one where this issue occurs.

Thanks for the help.

Really late to the party on this one. I think a lot of the high price of certain discs relates to the authenticity of the film itself. I for one enjoy hearing and seeing SW Episode 1 in its original form before Lucas waved his magic fingers and modified it to make it “better looking and sounding”. Look at what Cameron has done with all his latest new enhanced releases. DNR’rd to where it’s unwatchable, new Dolby Atmos mix on a film that’s 30+ years old. Are you serious!

I for one am Gen-X and never had the means to own LD back in the 90’s. I think a lot of us are hitting that age where things we couldn’t experience back then but wanted to, now have the means to do so. Is it stupid to spend $100 on a LD, of course it is. So is spending $50Grand on a vehicle but plenty do it. Or buying that coffee every other day for $5.

I won’t call anyone stupid for spending $X amount on a LD. If you get enjoyment out of it, awesome! Some discs I paid more than what I’d like to admit. But my wife I get so much enjoyment when watching those films that’s it’s well worth the cost because we look forward to LD movie night. Going to theater now a days you’ll drop $65 with 2 tickets, popcorn/soda and candy. All for a mediocre film that’s been rehashed over and over again.

You got to remember that us the audience as in here on lddb, is not the audience current 4K releases are going for. If you go on r/4k you’ll read how everyone wants Atmos remixes with hdr grading and film grain removed. They only care about how it looks and how it sounds on their new OLED’s and Atmos enabled speakers. Not how the film maker intended it to look or sound.

You make a great statement about Aliens 4K release. It’s one of the few 4K releases that keeps the original remix along with no DNR, it does have hdr which is OK I guess. It’s also rare to see a 4K release with DTS encoding. We just watched the Japanese AC3 release of Alien a few weeks ago and it looked and sounded amazing for being almost a 30YO release.

Everyone also raves about the LOTR 4K releases with new sound remixes and new color. To me, the DVD version is the closest you get to the theatrical release with sound and color. If you say that on r/4k, you’ll be downvoted to oblivion.

Sorry to go off the rails in respect to the original subject. Buy yes, I will only watch T1 on the Hemdale mono or the T1 Japanese THX release.

Good Christ, a lot of these forums are just viscous. Kind of ruins the fun.

Ahh relax a little, signofzeta means well but you gotta have some thick skin around the elders. This forum is not like Reddit where everyone is treated like unicorns and rainbows. They’ll be straight with you. In all seriousness everyone is just trying to help. The more that we point out the better it’ll be for you if you stick with collecting and enjoying LD’s.

It’s better you find out now instead of 6 months later when you realize Dolby Surround is not the same as a AC3 release or a DTS release. Hard lessons now benefit the future.

The Panasonic has some reliability issues that you want to search for. One year warranty and lots of people have been burned after the initial warranty runs out. If you do go with a Panasonic, I would recommend the service plan from BB or Crutchfield.

If you’re going to spend that amount on a UHD player, I would look at the already mentioned Oppo 203 model which does all SACD and DVD-A, but it’s a bummer that it has no XLR outs. It’s super quiet and built like a tank. You could also look at a Pioneer UDP-500 if you wanted to keep it really old school. That has the best build out of all players. Too bad they only made them for 2 years I think.

If you scan Yahoo Japan for a few weeks, you'll see plenty of F1 Season's pop up. From what I've read the driver interviews are in English but everything else is Japanese. A more seasoned member may know and correct me if I misstated.

Here's a Youtube link for Driver's Eye F-1, hopefully it's available in your area.

Pioneer even put a HighVision LaserDisc[PILH-2001] which looks stunning. This was done 33 years ago...

I would think if the screen is flashing something is up with the disc. Also, a disc that's been sealed for 33 years has great possibility of being warped. I fail to understand the extra value of sealed disc's. Maybe someone here can explain that. As far as how good the movie is, I thought it was good. The blu-ray box set actually has a lot material that was left out of the studio cut.

I'm too lazy, wasn't there a video of some machine that you could shave the edge of the CD with a razor blade attached to a lathe somehow so the
light wouldn't escape the edges?

It was someone doing a review of an older product recently.

Edit: Found it.

Idiots.

Well, if the reputable sound people at TechRadar gave it 5 out of 5 stars, we must be in the wrong. Because TechRadar is just brimming with the revolutionary audiophile insights I simply can’t live without..

Regarding Alien3,
Fincher was handed a RED HERRING already in production with a pre-established release date. Needless to type, he and his team were under tremendous pressure to deliver on that deadline. An impossible task to be certain !
IMO he developed the story and delivered with uncanny cinema effects.Cheers to the membership !

I'm sure you know the film that was put out was not his film which is why to this day he still distances himself from it. The Alien Anthology bd (2010 Release) is the closest we have to his original edit. Still love the original Alien 3 film as you can see it has the Fincher touch to it.

should theoretically be equal since the benefit of the "more readable" protective layer is taken away.

What he said confuses me as well and doesn’t sound right. Something being readable is binary..either it’s readable by the laser or not readable by the laser. Moot point is right if you’re listening to these rips through your Logitech 2.0 computer speakers.

I love the YouTube algorithms though. How else would I follow a farmer and his cattle in Arkansas.

If you use the search function you’ll find plenty of posts about these units. Also the vast majority of users won’t buy 3 units within the span of a few months. Let alone the ones you purchased . There’s absolutely no sense to do so when you acquire just one of the ones you have. Most are happy to find one working unit and then start to buy movies and enjoy said movies instead of buying 3 players. I mean, think about switch connecting between 3 players just because. These units should be superior CLD-925, they cost 10x the price. Not sure what else you would expect in terms of craftsmen and quality between the units.

If you search you’ll find a post which rates them as X0>S2>CLD97/95 and then the rest. Congrats though. I’m surprised I didn’t see this post on the laser disc forever forum for the likes.

I loved that show. I loved Rhonda. I loved Gilbert. I loved Rick Shaw’s Kung Fu Theater. I loved Dynaman and Sorority Sisters at the Slime Ball Bowl O Rama. I loved just hearing Gilbert say, “Sorority Sisters at the Slime Ball Bowl O Rama” in a long belabored way.

There’s only one or two comics who made laugh as hard as Gilbert did. From his time on Up all Night to his bits he did on The Howard Stern show and Artie, he was one of a kind comedian. The bits they did would make me laugh until my stomach would hurt. Definitely cant get away with the stuff they did in today’s time.

Closest thing we have to Up All Night is the The Last Drive in with Joe Bob Briggs. Truly a great show.

Place is asking 200+ for some VHF models. Place basically cleaned some heads with a tape head cleaner, replaced some pinch rollers and a belt…bam..good as new.

I think it’s ok to discuss when comparing the older releases to the ever constant flow of new Star Wars being released. It’s fun to p**s off the so called Star Wars fan that swear the new releases with faux atmos and 4K/hdr/DV/dnr’d to death or whatever the hell the newest enhancement is, is the vision and message George really wanted to convey to us plebs 40 years ago. They think they’re actual film connoisseurs.

Plus it’s refreshing that you can speak freely here and actually not be banned for calling BS. The youngins have very very thin skin I find.

 Post subject: Re: Complete collection
Posted: 11 May 2025, 06:47

Having a “complete collection” means having tons of crap you don’t actually like so I never complete anything. I only want the good stuff…or at least the tangentially interesting stuff. I don’t even own every album by my favorite bands since almost every band has a stinker. I’m sure not going to keep a copy of Armageddon around just because it says “Criterion” on it.

I thought about collecting all the DTS but then I saw so called crap to me that I would never watch..The Nutty Professor…Great Expectations…That Pig Movie..Then I realized why would I spend money on something I’ll never watch..to say to my wife or internet buds that yes, I do have the full DTS collection. It’s cool if that’s something you’re aiming for, go for it. And very impressive if you are the one of the few who completes such a collection. I just realized that my monies would be better spent on movies I’ll actually watch.

It’s the same with Video game collectors, some of these guys are nuts traversing all around the globe going after a track and field game or a PS3 Pepsi Japanese only game. All the power to you.

I see buyers on whatnot just buying LD’s after LD’s and I think to myself…is that a movie you’re actually going to watch or just put in the collection? Then I think, hey it’s none of my business what these people spend their monies on and close the app. :wtf:

I’m trying to comprehend what you’re writing or asking? Is there a question you’re wanting answered or just stating you collect criterion and random publishers etc..etc..

This comes across as more of a blog post on geocities.

Sellers could be gambling that you’re not going to check the disk right away. You’ll leave it sit for a while and then when you do finally get around to watching you find that it’s damaged. Bulk sellers may also not have checked the disk themselves before selling.

I got burned a few times by not checking a disc when it arrived.

I'm different. I don't care about shipping costs. Tax, too. Often wished Vendors in the USA would offer something faster than Media Mail. Never asked. Stuff from Japan arrives faster than an LD from Los Angeles to Largo, Florida...

Tell the seller to update your invoice to a quicker domestic shipping service if media mail is slow and you don't mind paying more. I've been shipping LDs for 12 years and only ever had one package lost by USPS. Most media mail deliveries take a week, sometimes within 48 hours. But transAtlantic shipping is borderline prohibitive.

John

I’ve bought from you before and requested priority mail and you always obliged. Media mail to my location can take up-to 3-4 weeks and comes pretty beat up. Usually doesn’t matter as seasoned sellers pack really well. Some guys on eBay though have no business selling LD’s with the way they pack.

You are correct in that USPS is the most guaranteed shipping service around. FedEx treat packages like Ace Ventura and UPS is the best but expensive.

Thank you! I tried waybacking on my iPad and nothing came up (pages were blank), but I’ll try with my Mac.

I’m really interested in the whole technical and history of laserdisc just like OP, and wish there was a book with everything going back to the early days and would love to meet some disc mastering engineers, etc.

I only recently learned of disclord , may be rest in peace. I’ll google his name and check other forums to gather what I can from his posts. I hope he shared what he learned. I tried searching on his account, but there’s some forum tweaks that apparently hide his posts and account from being searched easily.

Look for a book called Videodisc and Optical Memory System by the late Jordan Isailovic. Great book that goes into the technical details of the LaserDisc and CED’s. Fascinating read I might add.

I have an old beat-up copy of The Laser Video Disc Companion - Updated Edition It features his reviews taken from the Laser Disc Newsletter . 472 Pages. It's beat-up because I read it alot.

He devoted just as much space in each review on the quality of the Transfer and Disc Pressing as he did reviewing the title itself, but this Edition only covers LaserDiscs released in the U.S.A including Mainstream and Pornographic titles from 1977 to 1990, although he also covered some Japanese Import releases. There is a large section in the back devoted to key Japanese; Anime; Adult Anime; Pornographic releases, etc. I believe that later issues of the Newsletter covered both LaserDisc and DVD releases.

WIN_20250713_05_44_53_Pro.jpg

He also lists 100 Great Discs and has a list of Guilty Pleasures .

I've searched eBay and found the book, but can't find any copies of the original Newsletters. Have anyone of you actually seen one? If so can can you direct me where to find them?

P.S. I also own several issues of Laserviews Magazine.

Mark

Funny i just read this post and remembered about a month ago, a significant number of these volumes appeared on eBay. I bookmarked the listings intending to purchase but the seller wanted $50 per volume, too much for me. The seller did just lower some volumes to $39 per year but still too expensive. I thought about offering $25 for each year but i have umpteen other magazines i need to read. As noted in the listing, these are the original newsletters, not reprints. They look in pristine condition.

Do a search for Laser Disc Newsletter in the shop. It looks like they have almost all the volumes.

I just picked up Alan Parson’s on Air and will update once I listen. I’ve been wanting to pick up a few more but they are not exactly cheap. Plus if I ask about them at my local pawn cd/record shop they look at me very strange and tell me a DTS CD is not a thing and I must be mistaken.

Update 11/7/25: Amazing mix and astonishingly use of the surrounds in that do sound fake. Wife even commented on who is this playing. For context, I played this through an Oppo-203 to a Sony AVR with pure direct enabled. Not a LD player. Highly recommended for a sit down evening with a gin and tonic or a glass of wine. I just ordered the eagles hell freezes over.

Is this some kind of sub-genre in Japan? It's kind of like the manga Crying Freeman which also had lots of violence and sex, but just short of being pr0n.

In the late 70's and 80's this genre was called Pinky Violence, meaning sexed up bad girl action films. Later on mid 80's the genre included Sexed up Ninja Female movies or Ninja Movies with plenty of naked concubines running around. Sex and Zen, Chinese Erotic Ghost Story comes to mind. The name Pinky Violence just kind of stuck since.

These movies all came to be rated as Cat III films in Japan, meaning plenty of violence and or sex, usually both though .

Here's a small write about how the unofficial name came about.

This one really has to be watched. I can honestly see making a comedy TV series about this business.

I wonder how many $ in tax write offs a business or individual could creatively deduct over 40 years of these things sitting in storage in various places.

I can't believe I actually watched this until the end. Hell of a bunch of a salesmen and i could see the idea of this working in a Grocery Store/Pharmacy or heaven for bid, mall's back in 80's. Like you said, problem would be loss prevention.

That kid looks like they could be 15 or 40 and either male or female.
