Mah well I could make pictures that bad too, if only my camera wasn't almost 12 years old by now and maxing out at 1600x1200...
But that picture just looks plain bad. This could even be a vhs screenshot.

So I've kept my word and made some crappy shots with my outdated camera.
Pictures are not really able to show what MUSE looks like in reality, with a better camera at full resolution it might be possible though.

LD was playing while pics were taken, no freeze frame. Some images are stationary though.
Pictures are unmodified like they came out of the camera.

Anyhow, so all the MUSE shots are from Sony: The Test Disc (1995) [00MW-0009] , the picture is not zoomed in, it's 1.78:1 material filling out the 16:9 display completely.

For reference, here are some SQUEEZE NTSC LD shots from DTS Experience (1998) [PILW-1258] , again 1.78:1 material filling the screen entirely without zoom.

Cream Lemon: Perfect Eternal Preservation Edition [PCLS-00001]

This box comes with 13 discs, and as it is "adult animation" i.e. pr0n, its not a TV show.
But can't think of anything none TV with more than 16 discs.

When I encounter someone I can't get along well with, like your conversation about the LJR-I,
I usually block these buyers so that they cannot bid or buy my auctions anymore.
There is an option like that somewhere quite hidden in the ebay account settings.
I think your best option now is to send him a shipping label and get the player back.
This guy smells like trouble.

Sorry to be annoying, but the 50 LD Urusei Yatsura set would have been a steal in 1999 for $1600.
$3200 would have been a realistic price at that point, probably.
And yes, $1600 in this day and age is too much.
So why not buy it for much less from Japan?

how do I find out what year my player is?

On the LDDB Homepage, go to "Help" and then select "Mint-o-Matic".
You can enter the serial number of Pioneer products there, and it should
tell you the production year in return.

I leave feedback right after the payment is received - this is also what I do on eBay and other sites.
Like 10 years ago I did the "lets wait for the buyers feedback first game", which resulted in no feedbacks
were given at all in 90% of the sales. So I gave up on that idea again and do my thing.

I have the feeling that what he is trying to say is... the "surround" sound he is getting from LD, does not sound like it does from Blu Ray or his computer.
Is that it thetmaxx ?

There is digital mono too of course.

Example: Dawn of the Dead (1978) [ID6683HB]

As for the speakers... on a surround system in surround mode, audio will only come from the center speaker.
My TV never reduced mono just to one speaker, but some could you'll have to test.

There are even MONO Blu-rays believe it or not.
Tampopo from Criterion Collection being an example.

I use Pioneer Plasma KRP-500A (European Model).
I watch LaserDisc @ 1920x1080.
To get good picture you need to spend some time calibrating.
I used "Video Essentials" LD for this.

I have a kuro plasma since 2008 (last model build, european version), and there are no burn ins.
You'll have to check used screen with caution.
Also check for red tint problem and bad pixels.
Some people also complain about noise made by plasma when switched on.
Check if you are fine with it in a quiet environment.

Yes I think it's a disadvantage that you are maxed out @ 1080p in this day and age.
Maybe 4k screen better in the long term, if new screens have quality to last a long time.
But it seems everything is trying to be as cheap as possible and obsolescent quickly.
Good luck finding a new screen!

I have one of Shiina's live LDs, Starting Legend Dash.

She is voice acting the main character of the show.
Complete anime, no live action segments.
Really popular manga too, well worth a try.

I've seen all of Yawara as fansubs.
Really great stuff.
Was considering to grab the LD Box sets for a while even, but then never did :(
They are (albeit very slowly) re-releasing the fansubs now with BD video source.

Back in the good old days I used a software called "Cool Edit" the record audio from LD.
I assume it has not been updated in ages and only works on Windows XP, but it was pretty awesome back then.

I know someone using an LD-S9 with a DD setup, if I'm not completely mistaken you grab the "RF" signal on the board somewhere.
Usually the point is labeled "RF" so you basically cannot miss it :P

I use this website to search for subtitles:
https://anidb.net/

It has a huge database, though finding the files itself is another thing.
As nothing is hosted on that website.
You might need to register an account to use all functions.

Well, thanks a lot for the site, I managed to find the anime I was looking for there and it says there are files for it.
But I don't understand how you can access those (I made an account but it doesn't change).
So could you please explain how does this work ?

OK, I'll try to explain:
It is a file database, for anime especially.
You cannot download anything there, but the information you are looking for is there, as a starting point.
Now for the specific anime "Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko (1999)" there is both good and bad news:
If you look at the files available, you can see some have english, and one even french subtitles.
If you hover with the mouse over the flag, it will give you further detailed info: "type: hard sub".
Unfortunately this means the subtitles are hard-coded into the video for this specific show, so your options are
limited to using a software that will OCR the hard subs and timing into a file, but will need editing and error fixing
later on, or the even worse option, to type them down and time them again from scratch.

Now for any other show you are interested in, check if any files available say "type: soft sub", these can be easily
ripped out of the container. This should be the case for any shows licensed in the U.S. and Europe that have been ripped
after soft subs became a thing.

Other useful information you can find on the site: You will know which group has released a certain anime, that you
are looking for - information on subtitle files is included in the database as well, as some groups tend to release them separately.
Now if you found what you are looking for, the hunt starts: you have to find a place that hosts the files you want.
If you click on the release group name, for many groups you can find certain links: website, irc channel, email.
This can make it easier finding their files.

Disclaimer: It is of course illegal to download any copyrighted works.

Invincible Robo Trider G7 and Infinite Ryvius LD-box I have seen on yahoo auctions in the past.
Same for the Sakura Set. It has been a while though. A friend of mine keeps track of auction
prices, he might know final prices and when they last showed up, but then there is also aucfan.

I am also thinking that the SONY device you bought can not overlay subtitles onto a video signal on its own.
You will need additional devices to accomplish this.

I can think of two more right now:

Dawn of the Dead: The Conclusion (1978) (Uncut) [BILF-9003]

The Seven Dogs' War: Complete Works of Director Mamoru Oshii [BELL-942]

Nope my set is still here, I can see it right now on the shelf. And it is not as beat up as the one that was sold.
The most interesting thing is missing anyhow: the audio cd's and the telephone cards.
Definitely way too expensive in this day and age without those goodies.
Anyone interested should look for the PCLS-00001 set anyhow, as it contains an additional disc.

Dude. You need to get an Atari Jaguar. You’d friggn LOVE that thing.

I had the Jaguar from day one, loved it.
If you want total cringe get an Amiga CD32, or a 3DO. That console had big software houses supporting it,
and it fell through even before the jag.
But I can rescue myself from being looked down upon by saying my favorite console was the TurboDuo.
Never bothered with XBox or CDi.
One story I remember about CDi though, I entered this giant media store (must have been around 1994) and
asked a clerk where the LaserDiscs are, and he took me to the CDi corner. Of course the LD's were at a
completely different area of the store, he just did not know better.

If you want to get into power filtering the cheap way, get a UPS.
If you chose the right model with large enough capacity reserves
you will get some other benefits along the way like surge protection
for example - on my APC unit i can set maximum and minimum voltage
inputs - if these limits get exceeded the battery backup will become active.

Looks very good indeed what substance has done. Totally jealous :)

They do.
You press "A" on the remote to start the playback, and then it simply never attempts a side turn.
