I was going to post this on the receivers thread but it was already closed. It might be a better idea to consolidate some of the subforums, particularly in Laserdisc Players section. It's usually a good idea on newly opened forums to use the "less is more" approach. You don't want to spread threads too thin, and it makes for a better browsing experience. All five subforums in Laserdisc Players could be combined into one hardware section, that way no one will miss interesting threads that they might miss because they will never click on the LD-G or Muse subforums. Anyway, thanks for opening the forum and the design and color scheme look great! |

I respect motley6's opinion but I kind of like multiple sub-forum threads. It makes it easier to find things your looking for. I think this is especially true for people that may not visit often and are looking for a very specific thing,,... like ac3 mods or something. The forums look sparse now, but in a few years with 1,000's or even 10,000's of threads going it will not. And by that time it will be too late. I often follow the threads on Blu-ray.com and they have a lot of sub-forums and it's still pretty hectic at times. Once again, I respect everybody's opinion so surely there will be some other views. |

It is sometimes useful to start out with a sparse layout, then as threads get created which follow certain topics, to split those off into their own areas. Mostly, this saves having to reorganize the forum later on when the way people use it proves to be something different from what you expected. |

I'll stick to a rather agnostic approach to sub-forums. Empty ones for too long will simply disappear. Popular ones might get their own split (movies could get sub-genres, music could get sub-genres as well). Trying to find how "sticky posts" work exactly. Playing with mods and hacks to add more user-friendly interfaces (some AJAX might help). Julien |

How about posting scanned copies of laserdisc catalogs and brochures? I have a few of the older Criterion inserts that I can contribute. I know that Pioneer released catalogs as early as 1981 but I have never been able to find them. |

Some kind of "Vintage Repository"? |

Would it be too impudent to host an eBay forum here? It's the elephant in the room, whether you're a seller or a collector, or both. We might benefit from some big game hunters' personal experiences in the wilds. J |

In reference to E-bay Forum. What would this involve? Not familiar with this. Pray tell hopefully something pro-active and/or constructive. Curious ..... |

I suggested the eBay topic with a number of issues in mind. One, the loss of control in auctions to some automated app that eliminates the give and take of a true auction. As a collector, that has certainly dampened my interest in bidding on items. Then, as a seller, I'm interested in the issue of pricing and would like to hear other people's philosophies. Also, there are quality issues, shipping issues, timing strategies, even listing issues. Why do people write "I only watched it once or twice," as if that somehow makes the laser disc less "used." I don't think naming dubious sellers or buyers would be helpful. But there are lots of things I'm sure people would like to blow off steam about. I just thought this could be a place to share experiences. |

Thanks for that reply... You touched on some good points to discuss. Looking forward to dialogue on these and other Dealer / Buyer / Auction issues. Will check out the E-bay forum to test the water there for inspiration and/or further ideas to contribute.... Thanks again Julien for putting the Forum into action !!! |

I would suggest a sub-forum for questions regarding submissions/updates as well as entries to the database. (might take some work of admin/Julien) I, for example, always had a few questions/problems I never asked, because I didn't want to make wrong updates or bother Julien with something I could possibly find out myself elsewhere - if I can simply make a thread it's open to anybody who wants to take the time to explain. Some examples: I would like to inquire about (and possible dispute) some secondary infos on the database such as prices and release dates. I find the use of reference codes on some labels confusing (using different codes if several or none at all are present on the sleeve etc.) I need help identifying the content/titles of some Japanese Discs to be able to add them to the database. (In turn I could help with German and Korean releases.) As stupid as it may sound it took me a while to use the reference search correctly - because the title search works without a placeholder (*) I simply assumed that the reference search did not work correctly, whereas it does. I would also appreciate a thread or sub-forum for evaluations, so a non-hardcore-collector like myself can ask the ones in the know about an approximate trade value of a certain title (not all have trade-histories on LDDb.com) The possibility of a foreign language section should imo also be considered. Maybe a Japanese section could seriously increase the popularity of the site. I would also like to see the proposed section about everything that's not players or discs themselves, such as adverts, catalogues, articles, trade-mags and the lot. (For example 'spannick' has recently uploaded a few HK LD catalogues which hold a lot of information not (yet) on the database and are surely of interest to several collectors on here.) |

(might take some work of admin/Julien) Could the current Feature Request be a good place for these questions? I can turn it into a "feature request/questions about..." easily. 8537935 wrote: I would like to inquire about (and possible dispute) some secondary infos on the database such as prices and release dates. (In turn I could help with German and Korean releases.) There are fair questions and I sometimes have to fight between several contradicting updates for long period of times before someone brings a good explanation requiring splitting into 2 different releases or have different cover pictures distinguish between close releases. 8537935 wrote: As stupid as it may sound it took me a while to use the reference search correctly - because the title search works without a placeholder (*) I simply assumed that the reference search did not work correctly, whereas it does. Could I improve the wildcard character on title search? Right now a simple string will look for *string* but if you start adding a single *, then to avoid too many hits, I need the user to decide if it should be at the beginning or at the end (strictly) of the string. 2001 will find all titles with '2001' in title or the reference. 2001* will find all entries starting with '2001' in title or the reference. *2001 will find all entries finishing with '2001' in title or the reference. 8537935 wrote: The possibility of a foreign language section should imo also be considered. Maybe a Japanese section could seriously increase the popularity of the site. It's hard to translate a complete website in a different language. I tried to put templates contents mostly out of the code but have some historical left-overs. Each time I make a modification, I would need all the translators to come back and make the same changes again. I've worked on it quite a bit but ended up being too busy with updates/submits: Code: Select all http://www.lddb.com/index.php?lang=fr8537935 wrote: I would also like to see the proposed section about everything that's not players or discs themselves, such as adverts, catalogues, articles, trade-mags and the lot. That has been asked by other members already. I'll add a "General Discussions - Laserdiscs" to the 2nd forum! Julien |
