I was ok with your strategy until point 3.

I only bid on things I really want so my goal is to win those items not lose.
If we are talking about bidding on rare laserdiscs there aren't enough copies of many titles to adopt your policy. It could take forever to win with that strategy.
I would say my success rate is about 80% which is why I have been able to assemble a really comprehensive collection of music LDs in under 6 years.
So I win far more than I lose but I am very selective in what I bid on.

Interesting ... different perspective then mine. My success rate is around 40 or 50%. If I go much over 50% ... I usually assume I'm paying too much. Good luck with your collection. Cheers :)

Ebay is awesome, along with Amazon. Just have to know the ins and outs and use them to your advantage. The buyer always has the upper hand. Where else can you have such a huge potential market of buyers? The prices I can garner from Ebay far outweigh the costs.

I like e-bay too. I find anything you can win for a low price usually there is lots of copies around. If it's something I've been searching awhile to find, then usually you have to bid high or you won't get it.

Alot of times bids come in at the last 5 seconds. But as e-bay has always said.....it's not the last bid that wins, it's the highest bid. So you just have to make sure you have a high maxium bid in prior to the ending. Unless of course your one of the last 5 second bidders :D

Just put in your max bid and add 10 bucks, lol.

Another strategy which I have used particularly when I first started collecting laserdiscs was buy a few from a given seller on Ebay.
Then communicate with the seller during payment and ask if they have any more titles for sale privately.
You'd be amazed how many are willing to sell privately - works well for both parties as seller gets rid of a large batch very efficiently and buyer doesn't
need to worry about bidding wars etc.

Sometimes it is as much fun simply watching Ebay auctions rather than actually participating. It can also be very educational.
In the 10+ years I've been buying items on Ebay I've seen a good few 'nuclear bids' in my time.

For those not familiar with the term - nuclear bidding is when someone bids an extremely high amount on an item, simply to guarantee a win.
The theory being that no matter what anyone else bids they will always outbid them and win the item by a small margin.
As you imagine this strategy is somewhat flawed if you are after a bargain as all it takes is for two or more like minded people to bid in the same manner and the final price will be astronomical!

With laserdiscs where the rarer titles can attract many potential bidders this phenomena of inflated prices is quite common. It is often linked with newcomers to Ebay
who are unfamiliar with the true value of items and bid very high amounts in order to win certain auctions. The seasoned veteran will have watched previous auctions for the same item to familiarise themselves with the actual market value and then strike when the moment is just right. Timing is everything as you want the nuclear bidders to have exercised that option and depleted their funds before the next rare disc appears thereby allowing you to secure it at the true market value or better still below!

I have to agree being patient and learning the market on ebay are important. Even though laserdiscs were made in small quantities, I always remind myself another one will come along. This isn't true in every last case but in most. ebay gets people excited and encourages them to bid too often and too high. Patience is the key.

What's the deal with this? Some seller had a bunch of jap titles in a lot up for auction. Included the sixth sense among other thing. The time got down to under a day to go and the bidding was up to $98. then all of a sudden the auction was ended early. Now I've just received an email that the lot has been relisted, but this time with a starting price of $299. WTF? Can a seller end an auction early if theyre not happy with they amount being bid and then relist it again with a higher starting price?! Seems beyond dodgy. If this guy can do it, I'll have to remember to do it myself if I ever have auction that gets only bid of 99 cents.

Good day all,

Julien I have purchased manay titles from yourself in the past, and have always been impressed by the honesty, and pride conscienciousness of the service that you provided myself.

(And No! I am not getting commission for this guys:)

Thank you Julien for your thoroughness with all things, as the members appreciate any insight into the shealth-like practices that these businesses operate and quite frankly make out they are giving you something when in actual fact they are looking after their own interest's like you said and care little for the people (the public at large)

Thank you again

Regards to all

 :(

that's messed up. I can understand ended it early if the item is no longer available. I had to take one down luckily no one was bidding on a Sony Changer I had which I had to re-donate when I moved. And I had to move fast so I couldn't wait for the auction to end or to ship it because of a bad situation.
