Have you seen the film "Melancholia"?

Nope, don't think I've seen that movie...

Melancholia is a pretty frightening film about a rouge planet, called Melancholia, that passes by earth, then due to earths gravity, gets pulled back into earth. It's about 10 times larger than the earth so it strips off some of the earths atmosphere as it passes. Kirsten Dunst and Keifer Sutherland are in it - it came out last year and is sort of a remake of When Worlds Collide, but there's no escape ship because the scientists don't believe the planet will impact. It's a ghastly, depressing, frightening film and really good.

Sounds interesting but a film I'd have to watch when my wife is not around. She doesn't like movies like that

disclord, since you have mentioned this movie a few times i have it on my instant list to watch.

I first watched it via Netflix streaming after seeing it mentioned on some website - later I rented it on Blu-ray so I could see and hear it proper. Besides end of the world, it's a harrowing, and accurate, portrayal of severe depression and it's effects on those suffering from it and their family. The director suffered from it and the movie came out of his experiences with it. Kirsten Dunst is amazing in it.

That sucks - my partner, Tony, loves sci-fi and disaster films too, so I always have someone to watch them with.

Melancholia is an amazing film. It was the best film of 2011 after The Tree of Life. Lars Von Trier films are always good. Its not really a Sci-fi film. Its more of art-house, high-art type film. You can freeze any frame, print and hang on your wall as art-piece. Its that good.
Another Earth is another film came out in 2011 with the similar story. It was made on a budget of $200.000 so don't expect super CGI but still a great accomplishment. This time there is a planet approaching earth but scientist find out its actually identical to Earth in everyway. the rest is spoiler so I wont mention.

Earthquake is my favorite film of all time - its the first trailer I can remember seeing on TV about a week before it opened theatrically and I flipped out. I was 6 and made my dad take me to it the day it opened - I didn't even go to school that day and the theater had an incredible Sensurround installation. Next after Earthquake is The Towering Inferno on my list of absolute favorite films. The Blu-ray of Inferno, that finally uses the 70mm mix, is fantastic.

I saw the Towering Inferno at the theater when it came out (with ex wife and ex in laws). I have to admit I didn't look at the screen during parts of the movie
Same with Jaws when I saw that. I think I spent more time looking at my popcorn than the "shark" eating people.

i highly doubt "popeye" (1980) was re-issued with cx audio and possibly digital audio...
