how good is laserdisc ac-3 vs dolby 5.1 on dvd and blu-ray.
and how good is pcm digital audio vs dolby 2.0/4.0 compressed?

It has almost nothing to do with the format, but the master mix used for the source audio. Different masters have been used on different formats, leading to different sound. For example, the original T2 DVD theatrical cut used the 5.1 mix made for the Kodak/ORC CDS (Cinema Digital Sound) system - no other DVD and no LaserDisc ever used that mix. Same for the Dick Tracy DVD - its the only source of the theatrical CDS mix.

The source material and mastering matters but almost never studios mention of those. You can look at the facts below

Laserdisc:
Digital Tracks = PCM encoded at 16bit 44.1Khz sampling with 1.4mbps same as Redbook CD(music cd)
Analog Tracks = Probably same source FM modulated similar to FM radio or greater quality
AC-3/Dolby Digital= 384kbps with 5.1 discrete or 6.1 with back center matrixed into SR/SL
DTS= 1.4mbps with 5.1 discrete

DVD:
LPCM 2.0 & 5.1 with maximum of 24bit/96khz supported but rarely used
Dolby Digital/EX = 385kbps, 488kbps(mostly used) or 640kbps(legal limit but almost never used) with from 1.0 to 6.1(matrixed rear) implementation. 5.1 and 2.0 are mostly used.
DTS/ES/EX= 1.5mbps(about 25 titles) or 758kbps(mostly used) with 2.0 to 6.1 discrete. DTS EX is 6.1 with matrixed rear. DTS ES is 6.1 all discrete.
DTS 24bit/95khz was supported but never seen discs encoded with it beside demo discs.
Mpeg Surround was supported in region 2 with few available titles.

BD/Hd-DVD:
Dolby Digital/plus = 640kbps is legal limit and mostly used. DD Plus can support upto 7.1 and 3mbps(rarely used)
DTS= 1.5mbps(mostly used) or 758kbps DTS ES/EX/24bit/96khz also supported.
LPCM= upto 7.1 with variable bitrate sometitles average 3mbps peaking into 5mbps(uncompressed/lossless)
Dolby TrueHD = supports upto 7.1 with variable bitrate some titles average 3mbps(compressed/lossles)
DTS-HD = upto 3.0 mbps with 7.1(compressed/lossy)
DTS-HD MA= upto 7.1 with variable bitrate(compressed/lossless)

thanks.
why does it seem like the elite cld 95-97-99 have better dynamic range and s/n ratio vs dvd players?

DTS on LaserDisc and CD is 1.2mbps, not 1.4. it "fills" only 14 of the 16 bits so that if a user accidentally plays it without decoding the noise won't be at 0db. No DTS LaserDisc or CD has ever been commercially released using the 1.4mbps data rate.

LaserDisc's analog audio could have been a lot better if Pioneer had chose DBX II noise reduction instead of CX. But they wanted greater compatability than DBX had, so CX was adopted and modified by reducing the noise reduction from 20 to 14db and changing the time constants and knee where the compression goes from 2:1 to 1:1.

No, they don't. Go to http://www.theaudiocritic.com/cwo/Back_Issues/ and start with issue 16 - just start reading the reviews and articles. Hopefully, you'll learn something and won't be so ignorant.

You have to start somewhere, and if you are really serious in wanting to know what various specs mean and what matters, then you simply must start there. Read the various articles on audio myths in the Audio Critic issues - and the Hip Boots columns in various issues. Then read the reviews of digital equipment, especially the comments. You'll quickly learn, if you want to.

get that player and then if you like the format it won't matter if it's this, that or the other thing.
focus on the player, you have posted 115 posts and still don't have a player.

you know more than you need to know, focus that time to get the extra money you need!!!!!!!!!!!

also what type of home audio system do you have?? you ask questions about 1 sub or 2 but do you own any now?

do you have speakers or will you just hook into the TV and use the TV speakers?
focus on these things, get the stuff you need.
i take it you have a TV already.
so 1st you need the player.
focus!

I still don't believe he's at all serious. His posts are always irritating and stupid. If he was serious, he'd start out with a low priced player to see if LaserDisc was for him - a better, and cheaper option would be DVD, which anyone can afford now. I seriously doubt the VHS tapes he has are films that are not on DVD.

i agree with everything, you can get a really good mid range player to start out with for less than 100
and then upgrade.
it's just a place for him to post stuff and ask questions or to tell us that his mom will kill him if he gets a player.

Yeah, that was the part that confused me the most (well, actually this was the part that confused me the most). Why were we told these things? I really don't get it.

He found an old technology that has a forum and is able to communicate with others.
Even if he never gets a player he can post and talk all day long.

so i think that’s the deal, he just needs attention, or wants to fit in and can get it from the internet.
I’m sure he is on other sites under different names asking questions about other things.

I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head. Some of those questions seem to be just for the sake of asking a question.
As you said if he is serious he needs to focus on getting a player. No point asking any more irrelevant questions until he actually has a player!

I AM FOCUSING ON getting a player!
but i will save up for an elite, so far got 160 saved up (would have been 200, but i spent some money on taking my mom and 9 year old nephew to the show today).

it takes time.

Get a cheap player first. You are being stupid otherwise. AND LEARN ABOUT AUDIO - USE THE AUDIO CRITIC ISSUES!!! Or go DVD, which has better picture and is much better for someone like you. You have enough money to buy a DVD player and used discs now.
