after hearing numerous debates about the quality of dts ld's vs dts dvd's in terms of bitrate, fullness and mixes....
do you know what i'm craving? a little perspective.

how good are dts ld's vs dvd?
it's been SO LONG since i actually heard 5.1, i've forgotten--almost.

and if a sub does not have a lfe out, but a single mono line-in, will that work for lfe?

In response to this question, do you mean " if a sub does not have a lfe input?

Most powered subwoofers I've seen have the red/white rca line-in inputs and/or a single rca input which would be the LFE. If your receiver has a subwoofer/LFE output you could connect that to either the line-in or LFE inputs on the subwoofer. The primary difference is that the LFE input does not use the sub's crossover setting so you'd need to set that in the receiver.

For most DVDs, they use half bitrate DTS. THERE IS NO COMPARISON TO LD on this. LD took the theatrical mix and simply ported to 5.1 on the digital tracks. The DVD will use a newly remastered mix with compression and reduced quality to ensure better playback on even the lowest of systems. The DTS is simply a codec with a higher bitrate than that of Dolby's ac-3. If a DVD has both you can listen to hear the exact same mix, but with typically better detail in the DTS version simply due to a higher bitrate.

(NOTE: some DVDs have the theatrical DTS-ES mixes which are not on later issues or BDs.)

The initial DTS DVDs with full bitrate are very very good, and seem to be done pretty much the same as DTS LD. I have the Director's Cut versions of Lethal Weapon 1-3 which all have full bitrate DTS upgrades to the original Dolby Stereo, and actually stay true to the original sound design.

my sub has a single mono output "line in", no mention of lfe and not stereo, no phase or auto switch. has crossover on/off, crossover filter 60-250 and volume.

yes most of the time, since they used the original theater mix.

dvd versions are home mix versions so that it will work on any sound system

OK so as long as your receiver has the subwoofer out terminal you can run a single RCA cable from that to the mono line in on your sub. The sub audio signal is mono anyways so you should be good. You'll need to set the crossover to "on" and the filter to whatever value you like. I think the common setting is somewhere around 90-100 (Hz), meaning the subwoofer will only produce the frequencies below that point and filter out everything higher.
