Just recently got into Laserdisc collecting after wanting to for quite some time, so please excuse the very basic questions I may have. Now I know that for Dolby Digital EX you have to manually switch the decoder on your receiver, because the coding that alerted it to auto-switch wasn't there at the time. Does it work the same way for "regular" dolby digital AC-3, DTS, etc? My concern is that I do not have the OEM remote for my receiver, and there is no way to change the decoder without it. Now, my player does not have AC3, so I am mainly concerned about DTS. Would a DTS laserdisc always play DTS audio through the digital output, and a receiver automatically decode it, or would it need to be manually switched?

I had the manual switch problem only on badly mastered DVDs.

For Laserdisc, the A/V Amp was always happy to receive DTS 5.1 signal and automatically sync on it, either via TOSLINK or COAX.

I'm almost sure the receiver recognizes the signal automatic.
I never had a reciever that didn't recognize a signal before...
What reciever is it?
If you're receiver isn't set to a specific input or assigned to a source (analog only) or pcm downmix I don't see any reason to panic

My first 6.1 amp was the Onkyo tx-sr600e. I figured 6.1 is the last step in home entertainment. Boy, was I wrong
great machine at the time with ex decoding. sad thing about it there are only a few laserdiscs that have the ex soundtrack. Thank god dts es was put on dvd's
I remember buying Gladiator Region 1 with the dts es soundtrack. It sounded soooo wide in the back

Most receivers should automatically detect the DTS signal through coax or optical digital cable. Hopefully you'll have no problem and soon will be able to listen to glorious laserdisc DTS sound.

Alright, thanks for all the help guys. And Kris, its a Yamaha HTR - 6230, nothing special but I got it for next to nothing as a trade and it works well enough for me. I don't even have any DTS Laserdiscs at the moment, but my DTS copy of Se7en is in the mail right now! I'm definitely excited to hear the improvement.

Erik29gamer, that's the receiver I had used for many years before I upgraded to an RX-V571 for my main setup. I even have a HTR 6130 upstairs in my living room and it has no problem detecting a DTS or AC3 signal from any digital input. Gotta love the Yamaha amps.

Se7en came in today and it all works and sounds just as well as I hoped! Thanks guys!
