Just finished an article on the quality of movie soundtracks transferred to video. My conclusion was transfers from films: Optical sources = low-fi, Magnetic sources = mid-fi and Digital sources = hi-fi. Guessing that most soundtracks on LD are from optical sources of which I have heard a few and I'm happy with the results, but now I will be on the lookout for titles sourced magnetically and digitally. |

Sounds a bit dodgy to me. I mean, they're not using consumer grade source materials. |

Technology gets better, yep. Newer stuff is cleaner. You have that right. However I don’t think it’s correct at all to say that “most” LD have a magnetic sound source. Magnet sound is only really found in theatrical prints and after the late 80s new prints were made whenever possible. The sound could have come from a magnetic source on a theatrical print or the original tape. Many LDs have totally remixed sound meaning they went back to individual elements for the sound. Then there is the hard truth that a good magnetic recording is hard to beat for sources that aren’t super dynamic. A bad recording sounds like crap everywhere in any format. |

Specs from said article: Optical = 50 to 12,000 Hz with s/n of 45 db. and Magnetic = 50 to 15,000 Hz with s/n of 55 db. |
