I have the 1995 THX release of Alien, but do not have any of the necessary accoutrements for AC-3. I know that the AC-3 soundtrack came from the 70mm/Sensurround elements, and in any case the disc is really fun to hear.
I am curious though: Does the Dolby Surround track originate from that same 70mm mix as the AC-3, or is it from some earlier mix? All of the discussions about that release I can find center on the AC-3 track itself, and since I have no AC-3 setup for LD I can't compare!:-)

Doesn’t it say on the package somewhere? It seems like it would.

I can’t say for sure but my assumption is that it’s a new mix. They would have re-done everything to make the 5.1 so they probably dowmixed it into a new Dolby Stereo version as well.

This may or may not answer your question; read disclord's comments....

Alien (1979) [8760-85]

Now I have to re-watch this again on both the PCM and AC3 tracks just to get a feel for the atmospheric differences.

You're right: It does indeed explain on the sleeve that the soundtrack*S* on the disc originated from the 70mm 6-track elements—I've owned the disc for who knows how long and never noticed that "S" on "soundtracks." Thank you!

With PCM, it already feels like the house is coming down thanks to the bass on all the exterior spaceship flybys—I bet the AC-3 sounds awesome too. I have several friends who are Alien fans, so when the quarantine is over we are having a belated "Alien Day" over here and watching what I billed as the "Sensurround Alien," LOL.
