Here's a Noob question - if I have the player running straight to the TV (because I don't have a receiver setup), will any LDs have trouble playing audio at all?

For example, with modern movie rips that contain DTS and other complex audios, my Roku device won't play any sound because it can't decode the track.

Should I avoid buying certain LDs for this reason? Or will they all play, but I simply won't get the fancier surround sound?

(PS I don't even have a player yet, but I may start collecting some discs while I look for one.)

You can plug an LD player straight into a TV, yes. That’s what most people did. This is a format from the late 1970s. It doesn’t required 21st century decoding tech.

DTS are the exception to this, but DTS LDs are pretty hard to get by accident.

That's just the thing I mean. If I bought a DTS disc, it wouldn't sound at all on such a basic setup?

You can still watch the analog track on DTS titles.

I think there's like maybe two or three titles that only offer the soundtrack proper in DTS. I know Blade's analog channels are a commentary and isolated score so it's impossible to watch without DTS equipment.

You may get audio but not the DTS soundtrack, same with AC-3.

I guess if you had a decoder between the TV and LD player you could technically get the DTS or AC3 but it would be down converting it to 2 channel so
its a moot point to even bother.

You would most likely be hearing the L/R stereo audio not anything enhanced.

But in all reality why would you bother to collect LDs to get blockbuster titles that you can get on bluray for 5 bucks now.

If you convert your LD a/v output to hdmi, your TV should downmix DTS to 2ch. You need a video processor of some sort which accepts composite video and dts via digital audio then transcode these to hdmi. Most later dvdo units should do this. But then you might want to spend the money on proper audio gear.

This is the direction I will go eventually. Will to keep it simple for now. Funds are a bit limited at the moment, so choices have to be made, especially with LD decks costing more than they used to cost 5 or 6 years back.

While I’ve never done it there are for sure TVs that will handle DTS LDs.

It’s all pretty irrelevant though. There are very few DTS LDs, they all came out in a very short span of time and the majority represent mainstream Hollywood stuff from that same period, such discs also exist in non-DTS form. If you have a two channel setup and you get one, sell it.

As Takeshi666 said. Some DTS titles have the movie soundtrack on the analog tracks. Check the database. You would need to change the audio output settings on your player to analog with the remote to take advantage of it. If you cant playback/decode DTS then do as Zeta says and buy the non DTS version.

Well most of them do, but yes, just check the database. Usually the analog track is probably just a standard dolby surround one. Some might have a commentary on one of the analog tracks so you're stuck watching the movie in mono.

I was actually unaware that a small number of DTS titles sacrificed the analog tracks for commentary and/or isolated score like the copy of Blade.

I always thought the DTS producers were dead set on always providing a full movie soundtrack on the analog track to provide that backward compatibility for those without a DTS processor. I think I even recall them emphasizing that concept as a means to counter Dolby’s implementation of stealing the one analog track for AC-3 saying that it sucked that early adopters with “analog only” players couldn’t watch their movie in stereo.

I guess they reneged on that promise when it came to Blade.

Well to be fair, Blade was a really late release, but it does seem odd since DVD had just come out that they'd release a disc on a dying format that's an even harder sell than usual.

I think I saw at least one other movie with a similar scenario to Blade, but I can't remember what it was. I think it was some Jackie Chan vehicle.

I was interested to find out so I checked. Of the 140 US/JAP DTS Laserdiscs released, only these twelve had a mono soundtrack on one analog channel and commentary on the other. Interestingly the first three titles on this list have the mono soundtrack on the left channel, whereas the remaining nine have this reveresed with the mono track on the right channel.

In the Mouth of Madness
Mortal Kombat
Ronin: Special Edition
Goldeneye
Spawn
Austin Powers
Strange Days
Wag the Dog
Scream
Get Shorty
Red Corner
Man in the Iron Mask

The only DTS discs that do not have a some kind of analog soundtrack for the film are these four titles. Rush Hour and Blade are the only two releases to have commentary on one channel and music score on the other. Dark City and Lost in Space are the only two releases to have two commentary tracks on either analog channel.

Rush Hour
Blade
Dark City
Lost in Space
