Put strange days on my list.

Anyone have and feedback on the Ac-3 track for Braveheart and Forrest Gump?
May watch one tonight if either are particularly good

I recall Forest Gump being quite impressive especially during the combat scene and the fishing boat storm scene. Overall, it's not the type of movie w/ a lot of surround activity but it's amazing when it does kick in.

I have Braveheart on DVD and can't remember if I found it impressive or not. I would guess the DVD would have the same AC-3 mix as the LD since it was an early release before the producers did a lot of remixing for the home.

Phantom Menace-theatrical Dolby EX never again released
Mission Impossible-theatrical mix with more LFE-mix redone for dvd with less LFE and has carried to all later releases.
Star Ware SE 1997 trilogy boxset-great mixes despite the changes. Last good sounding trilogy release
Goldeneye-heavy LFE mix on all early Dolby versions. It carried over to the DVD and was later remixed.
Tomorrow Never Dies-GREAT mix. DTS is better but ac3 no slouch.
Long Kiss Goodnight-DTS is better but ac3 still same great master
Alien-scarier test Sensurround mix
Clear and Present Danger
Cutthroat Island
The Crow
Ghost and the Darkness
Stargate
Twister
True Lies
The Phantom

Absolutely agree. The optional PCM soundtrack is probably just as impressive too, in fact superior in many ways but I suppose at the end of the day it's down to personal preferences and maybe the actual system it's played on which determines which to choose?

Yes pro-logic Jake, although my preference would be for DTS Neo:6 (Cinema mode) which I usually find sounds more dynamic and spatially transparent than any of the Dolby options, once again only my personal preference though. You just got me thinking now about JP 2; not run it for sometime but I have recollections of the DD track on disc 2 not sounding anywhere near as good as it does on the first disc and the difference between PCM & DD 5.1 was like a gulf, I don't have my version to hand atm so can't confirm the release number. Might be worth checking this out again to see if my memory rings true?

PCM is always impressive when it comes to two channel audio reproduction especially when the right combination of DA conversion and filtering is applied. However, it can’t compete with anything related to a well mixed multi channel discrete surround sound since it’s not designed for that.

One exception of a poorly executed AC3 encoded laserdisc would be this title.....

https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/07223/ML ... al-Edition

The DD track is encoded in 4.0 (three front channels and one surround channel) and the audio levels are also pretty low. When switching to the PCM track and using Pro-Logic, the audio suddenly becomes incredibly spacious and robust with very tight bass. Thus, this is one of the few titles I would just forgot about listening to the AC3 track.

I also would vote for this. It’s an extremely bad bad bad movie but not on any technical level. It’s one of my best AC-3 LDs.

Another horrible POS I would vote for would be Goldeneye. It’s one of the best LDs ever made on almost every level except for the moronic artistically bankrupt garbage movie that’s it’s all wrapped around.

There are other threads like this and in them I usually mention Oneamisu no Tsubasa (Wings of Honneamise): Memorial Box (1987) [BEAL-1142]. They used the DD tech but not so much the style sheet. Voices come from wherever they want them to come from instead of only from the center like so many mainstream movies. Do you like Ryuichi Sakamoto in 5.1? You probably do. There is a CLV version as well but...come on. It’s also one of the only 5.1 LDs there is so you sorta have to get it....one of the best LDs ever INCLUDING the actual movie.

My favorite "demo" discs in AC3 back in the late 90's were:

Fifth Element, The (1997) [82406] (luckily a Pioneer pressing)
Men in Black (1997) [82656] (also Pioneer)
Face/Off (1997) [LV330553-WS] (used the opening chase to benchmarks subwoofers)
Trainspotting: Special Edition #325 (1996) (Uncut) [CC1477L] (music segments)

(also because I didn't have a large collection back then!)

Never seen Face/Off
Does it still hold up?

May get that on my next LD order from the USA.

Apparently there's a nice 4k BD pressing of The Fifth Element, UK I believe.
Probably the same audio as the Sony version (? idk) but the video is supposedly less sharp on the UK version (Dolby Vision).
I have only seen screenshots.

Thanks guys for mentioning Starship Troopers and Event Horizon, those two weren't on my radar until now (gotta get myself a copy!).

The soundstage on Phantom Menace is indeed incredible - so much power! I have it on DVD too and compared to the LD version it sounds lifeless and dull. I think the pod race scenes are a good example. On the LD version, when they start up the engines before the race, it almost made my heart stop when I first watched it. On the DVD it's little more than "poof, poof". Boooorring!

And yeah, "Saving Private Ryan" is another good example of what an uncompressed AC3 soundtrack can sound like. The opening alone is really intense... Still one of my favorites LD releases. Think I have to watch this one again during the next couple of days, haven't seen it for a while.

AC3 on LD is very, very much compressed, at a fixed 384kbps to be precise.
DVD is usually 448kbps up to 640kbps.
AC3 on BluRay can't go higher than 640kbps (to keep backwards hardware compatibility I presume).

That's why they came up with DD+ (up to 6.144Mbps but a lot of online video streaming offer only 48kbps) and Dolby True HD for uncompressed lossless (up to 18 Mbps) to go beyond these limitations.

I guess dynamically it’s less compressed if they dropped the theatrical mix directly onto the LD whereas DVD soundtracks are often redone as near field mixes which can make them wimpy despite the high bit rate.

(I just wanted to air the Laserbite side of things...)

Near Field miss for the catlitter.

While I only had a handful of AC3 discs, about the same as I do for anime where I can find the subs.
Pink Floyd the wall was great, but then again I only had a bose setup and those can really tear it up :|

Can't remember what else I had at the time, right now I only have 3

Lady and the Tramp (1955) [14673 AS]
Pink Floyd: The Wall: Widescreen Collector's Edition (1982) [ML106344]

TrueHD is still compressed, but it's lossless compression.

As to hot AC3 mixes, I found Independence Day to be a very active mix with very hot LFE, possibly with a good bit of sub-20hz content... maybe it's an unaltered theatrical mix? I do not recall the 5-Star Edition DVD being as hot on the LFE, and my current Steelbook Blu-Ray (can't recall if it's TrueHD or DTS-HD Master) isn't either.
