Post subject:  Comparing LaserDisc Audio Tracks to Those on Blu-rays

Hi,

For a few years I've maintained a website where I compare LD and DVD audio tracks to their blu-ray counterparts. Most are better, but some are worse. The gist of it is that since the early-mid '90s, noise reduction has obliterated detail from films in the same way that video NR has made some films on blu-ray look waxy and blurry.

If anyone here has the ability to capture any LaserDiscs they own, I'd be happy to compare them to their blu-ray counterparts.

I'd love to see a comparison between Jurassic Park's Laserdisc and Blu-Ray. Even the LPCM Stereo of the first release (which costs around $4) sounds much better than the Blu-Ray version.

This is really good stuff. I love it.

Also, well done on reviewing one of the best films ever made. This was my top film of 2020 by trillions of light years. So the 2008 DVD has the best audio? I'll have to get it.

Keep up the superb work.

Just checked the site out and it's interesting. I was really fascinated with LDs in the earlier 2000s as a new hobby and was surprised by how much better they tended to sound vs dvds. But I wouldn't have expected many LDs to still be preferred over blu rays. But it can go to show that source and mastering are important and you can't just rely on having a really high bandwidth. I'm mostly out of the LD game and don't want to retroactively go back and by a bunch just for the audio tracks, but I would certainly like to hear some of them.

Wish you would do more comparisons it is a great site.

What they did to American Graffiti was bad and i never noticed until i listened to the Japan laserdisc. The amount of noise reduction on the audio they did in 1998 was ridiculous. Which carried over to the DVD and blu-ray. Hopefully it is fixed on the 4K.

I also was disappointed to find out about Adventures of Robin Hood Blu-ray having the audio cleaned up. But the laserdiscs only sound slightly better. I wonder if the source tapes are just so badly degraded. If and when WB decides to do a 4K release i hope they can do a better job on the audio.

The Star Wars films, James Bond films, Star trek films would be great comparisons.
