Post subject:  Macross Flashback 2012: Is it Dolby Surround? Reprint?

Tonight I was watching Macross: Flash Back 2012 (1987) [BEAL-132] (in 2012, that's weird) and I'm now using a surround receiver and speakers for the first time in my life. Usually I always found stereo to be sufficient.

Now this LD is entirely music with just a sound effect thrown in here and there, but it really seems to come across as a fully Dolby Surround soundtrack. Areas where I notice this:

In the very beginning where Minmay is beat counting. It seems to entirely come from the center channel.

The crowd in the scenes at the beginning and end that were made just for 2012, they are definitely coming from the rear channel.

Music in general.

The LDDB lists this as a Stereo release, and since this is from 1987, not a big budget Hollywood movie, and contains almost nothing but music, it would be perfectly fine that way, but it seems be Surround. I'm new to Pro Logic so is it possible that when decoded the thing just accidentally pulls rear and center info from regular delay? Since this question will be asked, yes, I'm running in standard Pro Logic mode with no added BS effects like "hall" or "stadium" or anything.

I have a theory. I bought this disc in the mid 90s after the Macross: Do You Remember Love? Perfect Edition LDs had come out. I say "LDs", the plural, because unless I'm crazy in addition to Macross: Ai Oboete Imasuka (Do You Remember Love?): Perfect Edition (1984) [BEAL-448] there was another "Perfect Edition" in CLV. Anyway, those had all sorts of work done to the soundtrack to make it into Surround. There are even, IIRC, new sound effects added, although I can't really remember all the differences anymore since I've seen nothing but the Perfect Edition for the last decade plus. Since the Perfect Edition adds Minmay's Megaroad launch concert/cocaine-fueled dream from Flashback 2012 at the end of the movie...is it possible that they reprinted Flashback 2012 when the DYRL Perfect Edition came out and converted some of the sequences to Surround? Obviously it wouldn't have been worth it to do Flashback alone, but since they were re-doing the the entire DYRL anyway...they did charge 8320円 or something ridiculous like that for the thing. They had the revenue to justify it. :)

My copy looks identical to the original, as far as I know, but its almost certainly a reprint since I bought it from a seller that never had anything vintage (Laser Perceptions, if anyone remembers them) nearly a decade after release and this was new in the package for full price.

Or maybe it was Dolby Surround all along and the LDDB just needs a tweak?

i have the Macross: Flash Back 2012 (1987) [BEAL-132]

but as i'm sure you can see on your copy that the corner obi and the back only say stereo.
now this was released about 5 years before the box set Macross: Ai Oboete Imasuka (Do You Remember Love?): Perfect Edition (1984) [BEAL-448]

and the remastered film only
Macross: Ai Oboete Imasuka (Do You Remember Love?) (1984) [PILA-7008]

the remastered films are in dolby, i had the first disc at one time, but not anymore. Macross: Ai Oboete Imasuka (Do You Remember Love?) (1984) [SF078-5022] and it said stereo, again as you can see on the corner obi.

on imdb the film is labled as dolby, so either the original release was stereo and upgraded for the box set to dolby, but japanese tend to leave the original soundtrack as it is.
or it was always dolby and the first issue LD was cut to stereo, or a printing mistake also.
and flashback could be a printing mistake also and really is in dolby.

fortunatly i don't have a 5 channel setup anymore just a great 2 channel 4 way speaker setup

I seem to remember Bandai making a big deal about all the upgrades to DYRL for the Perfect Edition. In addition to cutting the new ending sequence in there were upgrades to the sound. Or maybe I'm thinking of the DVD...? I think it was the LD. I remember it being really weird watching it he first time since things were so much different. Not just the Surround aspect, but actual sound affects being different/more numerous. Like I said, maybe it was the DVD that had all the upgrades...I can't find any print ads for either the Perfect LD or the DVD in my old magazines.

Anyway, if someone had an original-ish pressing of Flashback 2012 they could verify if Surround was present.

Not sure if this helps or not, but I have an original VHS FB2012. The case says "Stereo HiFi". No mention of Dolby Surround....

Depending on the receiver, even a regular stereo track will be translated in 4.0 or 5.1 surround depending on what it's capable of, regardless of whether it is encoded with matrixed surround tracks or not.

this is true, my old receiver gave the option of 5 channel stereo.

I just did some testing with my setup and discs I knew were stereo. The AVR235 puts out...something...from the rears and center on all of them, as we know. Its just that with Flashback the "something" just coincidentally sounds like actual Surround. The vocals really end up quite pronounced in the center and the crowd noises really end up being biased toward the rear. I think "Dolby Surround via dumb luck" might be the best description, is there a logo for that? :)

Are there credits which might give a clue?
