I have the Pioneer HLD-X9 and Sony MSC-4000 with a voltage down Converter. The HLD-X9 operates perfectly with all LD's and even my other Hi-Vision - The Legend of the Fall, for picture and sound. However, on Back to the Future but there is no sound. I tried adjusting inputs on the MSC-4000 and even altering the MUSE inputs (MUSE 1, MUSE 2, but the result is the same: no sound.
Is there something particular with this HV disc or is there something I am missing. Any advice is welcome.

Thanks

MUSE can be tricky for audio.

Some have analog or digital soundtracks, some don't.

Legends of the Fall (1994) [HVMC-21588] has EMF tracks, Back to the Future (1985) [PA-HD80196] does not.

Have you tried ALL possibilities?

  • Analog from MSC-4000
  • Digital from MSC-4000
  • Analog from HLD-X9
  • Digital from HLD-X9

Julien,
Thank you for your response. I have the ONY STR-DA5800ES a/v receiver which allows me to alter the digital analog source, but that did not change the sound. I will try to see if I can figure out how to run analog sound from the MSC-4000 if that may fix the problem. Will update.
Thank you.

Thomas

As it is right now, I have both digital and analog from the HLD-X9 to the A/V receiver and I am able to manually switch between coax/analog on the A/V receiver.

Regarding the MUSE, I have the MUSE out from the HLD-X9 TO THE MSC-400 and only RGB out to the A/V receiver.

Sound is directly sourced from the HLD-X9 to the A/V receiver and not by-passed through the MSC-4000. Could this be the issue, that the analog sound needs to be by-passed through the MSC-4000.

I have the English version of the manual for the MSC-4000 but I am not sure of what I may be missing in this set up.

Then you need another set of audio (2ch and 5ch) from the MUSE decoder to your A/V Amp.

Some MUSE soundtracks are encoded in the MUSE signal, 2ch or 3+1ch (4 but for 5ch they double the rear channel into left + right rear, and digital offer 2x 2ch = 4ch only).

Thank you for the description of the inputs/outputs of the MSC-4000. I disconnected the regular outputs for LD’s and was successful in getting both analogue and digital sound.

However, since the a/v amp does not have sufficient digital coax inputs to assign the MSC-4000 to a different input, I will need to split the analogue two channel sound to share with both the HLD-X9 and the MSC-4000. I was not successful in splitting the digital input. That said, the digital sound on MUSE Back to the Future was odd and not balanced. The center channel was also almost inaudible. The 2-channel analogue came out perfectly and sounded great on Pro Logic II.

Again, thank you for the help.

Thomas
