well i did it, i just got a SFT-100 CED player.
i believe it's the second type player made, only has the coaxal out on the back.

i bought it broken and fixed it, but i'm waiting for new belts as it will only play 1-2 minutes now.
i believe the motor belt that moves the stylus is worn and too large?

as for quality, it's not as bad as i thought.
there are some light speckles but it's almost like a super early LD in quality, or about 20% less in quality.

it was hooked upto my DVD recorder RF in and it was fine.
i picked up about 30 discs but only have 3-4 that i may keep.

if you can get one cheap do it, but as like LD players you have to watch out for shipping and if it's working etc.

also some parts are not made anymore so you will have to rebuild or have spare machines that you can take parts from, i had to rebuild my part that was broken with epoxy and metal.

Dont do ittttt, lol, welcome to the club. My wife was against them until I got a unit and some discs and sold like 2 discs and paid for everything. One thing you have to do is play a movie once or twice before you get the best picture because of the makeup of the discs. Blame Rix on my obsession:)

i'm blaming rix also.
the player i received has the switch on the side to load/play/off
that is connected inside to a white piece of plastic that pushes the platter up, but the plastic was broken and
wouldn't work.
so i had to rebuild that with epoxy and metal.
got it to play for a minute but it kept skipping back, found out it was the rubber belts and order them.

i plan on getting a few discs but not too many as most are on LD or they are p/s 2.35 which i don't really want.
they are cool and like i said before the little i watched wasn't that bad, i was thinking that it was going to be
like everyone said a VHS but it's much better than that.
LD is still - A no. 1 -

Night of the Comet - Not available on Laserdisc, the DVD is crappy.
what is wrong with the DVD??

and why do some collect films that are also on LD that may be better like zombie?
due to less made?? or are they just collecting all CED made?

the only CED disc i have that i know is not on LD or DVD is baffled.
most of the others i have are out on either LD or DVD or both.

The DVD was made off the CED pressing, the original has been lost. Beta, VCR and CED were the only means to get this thing.

really, i believe you but i can't believe it.
so what about CEDs like zombie, fire and ice and others like that, they were on LD
do they just want to collect everthing CED?

cool.
there are a few that arn't on LD so i may try to get them, like night of the comet and a few others.
i'll post some video when i get it all set up.

O.K. so fixed some issues.
the quality is a little worse than i said before.
still better than VHS or like your first VHS and player for the first time, if you watch a second VHS it starts to get worse, where the CED is pretty much the same.

BUT if the disc was played alot or the disc is dirty or something than there is an issue.
out of 10 discs that i tried only 1 has really bad A/V noise.

still if you like this type of stuff you can get one cheap, the player i have is more hands on.
you have to push the disc caddy back in to get the stylus arm back in place and you have to
flick the lever to get the disc up to touch the stylus rather than a motor to put it in place.

still a fun toy that i will make a video for to post on the tube.

I had the Fleetwood Mac Mirage tour on CED, and the picture and sound quality were really good. The CED has the full 13 songs. If you can find one cheap get it to try.

Fleetwood Mac: In Concert - Mirage Tour '82 (1982) [CS11E-V105422]

Strangely the USA LD for it has ony 9 songs, so it got chopped a bit.

My only CED player I have (a SJT 300) needs repair, so I just have it stored, or it might be good for parts.

Did you check to see if you need a new needle, they do go bad!

You get a new or rebuilt stylus and you will see the quality jump up to match Beta 1.

Typically audio scratchiness indicates either you need stylus or the disc itself has been played a lot. Some discs that may have been former rentals and saw a lot of play time.

Like new, new and sealed discs are exceptional in quality, relatively speaking. Unlike LDs, sealed discs will have no problems such as glue spill or rot. They will typically be just as if purchased new 30 yrs ago.

Stylus rebuild service at cedatum.net is superb. The styli they rebuild seem to be even better than new in box ones you can get, if you find them. Always nice to grab a second stylus in case you need rebuild of one.

There are at least a hundred CEDs not released on NTSC LD in US, and good movies too, like Taps or Endangered Species, so you don't need to collect a lot of them. We made a sort of impromptu list of them in another thread here in this category.

Zombie is popular due to rarity, and most who collect like to fill out their horror/sci-fi categories forst.

i think some discs that i have are used more than others, some get a clearer picture than others.
but i don't know how old the stylus is and i'm sure it could be replaced at some time down the road.
but i can watch the discs with no problems.

the only one so far on the list that i'm looking for is american hot wax, i sort of remember watching that on TV as a kid and would love to see it again.

now i have to find a place to put it on my shelfs.

I got American Hot Wax last year after looking a while. It was with a trade with another collector from the other website you just joined.

You have to keep an eye out there for when people list that they have some to sell or trade. Also watch craigslist, like the services that let you search every craigslist at once, like this one:

cool, i'll keep up the search.
the new servo arm belt is i guess too tight, played one side of a disc last night with no problem then side two was acting up.
when i took the top off again and pushed on the belt to stretch it it was playing fine again.
so i'm going to leave the top off for a while and watch it.

update:
player is fine but i'm going to sell it, unfortunatly i just don't have the space and the discs don't fit into the
cases i have for my LDs so i would have to make more room for something that i don't have the time or
space for.
