Looking down that list the only two I don't have on Laserdisc because they were never released on that format are: Don Kirshner Presents Rock Concert, Vol. 1 (Various Artists){76476020293} Teddy Pendergrass: Live in London {24543713593} Urgh! A Music War - I have on PAL laserdisc. It is a single disc edition 2 hours long as it plays both sides. Music titles available on LD run into the many thousands. The CED music titles did however have many unique and interesting covers, often completely different from their laserdisc counterparts so I can understand why these might appeal to music fans. I know they have grabbed my attention on Ebay when surfing! |

Urgh! A Music War is available on DVD by Warner Brothers. No special remaster, but PCM sound. To make it fit they did cut out a single track. No loss. Is as good or better than the laserdisc. |

That is fairly typical of most DVD reissues - compress as much onto 1 DVD as possible even if means rubbish quality and if it still doesn't fit cut some of the content out! That is precisely why I collect the laserdisc version! People who have never seen the laserdisc will never know the difference. |

LOL, you don't think there was editing when the original release was made? Doesn't make it holy scripture just because it's older print. LOL, again DVD release is better than the laserdisc. You don't think the laserdisc is a compressed format? Even though we don't talk of analogue signal in such a way, in comparison the LD is of less quality than the DVD. The DVD and the LD both being mastered off the master tape separately but totally different technologies. DVD sound is definitely of superior quality than the LD, in this case get the DVD, thank me later. Again it all goes back to the record labels who own these masters/rights and the $$$$ they make as to how much to put into the project of reissue. So if someone can do a pirated job better, I applaud them. There is no holy grail in the original releases, it's all about profit. |

In the case of mastering from composite video, which is 99% of concert films & music videos produced before maybe 1995, the LD will be better. This is, of course, because composite-to-component translation followed by MPEG-II compression must of necessity give worse results than straight composite without compression. When the footage was shot & edited on film or component video, other outcomes are possible, but in many cases even pieces shot on film were edited as video. LD analog audio is of extremely high fidelity. LD digital audio is uncompressed Redbook PCM, identical to a CD, whereas most stereo DVDs are in highly-compressed AC3 2.0, rather than PCM which would be more appropriate. |

Yes, but here is where the problem occurs in the technology of the flow. A laserdisc player (depends on the player) is inferior in getting that straight composite without compression signal out in a superior manner than DVD to the screen, here I give the nod to LD, but prefer remastered digital. Also, the sound in this case is of analogue quality on the LD, note: Just because the band width is capable of Redbook PCM doesn't mean the actual sound track is of that quality in that wrapper. Here is where the DVD PCM sound can easily be superior if done right. Here I usually will take PCM DVD sound over LD. |

What? I assure you, that statement makes no sense in the English language, & despite my extensive knowledge of video electronics & technology, I have not the slightest idea what you are talking about. elviscaprice wrote: Also, the sound in this case is of analogue quality on the LD, note: Just because the band width is capable of Redbook PCM doesn't mean the actual sound track is of that quality in that wrapper. If you are saying that the LD digital soundtrack mastering is sometimes poor, that's software-dependent. And, anyway, PCM on DVD is not very common. |

I will agree that I didn't expound that very well. I can assure you that PCM is very common on DVD, especially for musical material, which is where my main interest is. |

DVD PCM is 1536kbps LD PCM is 1441kbps So yeah, DVD PCM is superior by a smidge. However, I've only ever seen a few music video DVD releases in full bitrate PCM. |

I've seen more in Japan, especially on Jazz, Classical and live concerts (offering both DD5.1 or DTS 5.1 along with a 2.0 LPCM). That represents more data to store and usually they choose to go for 2-DVD releases, making a nice package with extra inserts/photos at the same time. Julien |

I recently acquired a copy of Mick Fleetwood - The Visitor on the RCA CED format. It was video story behind the making of the LP with the same title. Bizarrely it doesn't appear to have been released on any other format except CED. http://cedmagic.com/v-title-database/wi ... ood-1.html http://cedmagic.com/v-title-database/wi ... ood-2.html It was one on my wishlist for a long time. |
