If you like an ugly picture then I would say these are certainly the way to go.

Quite a lot of LDs were shelved in warehouses under not so great conditions. The newest LD I cant read is from 1996. The first chapter isnt playing, but there are no scratches or marks on the LD.
I have bought shrinkwrapped CEDs, they play like new. Ive bought some shrinkwrapped german LDs from the early 80s, every third title had problems with Laserrot. I prefer the LD medium instead of CED, but for archivists I would recommend CED instead of laserdisc. Playing like new is not the same as a good quality. I had a player and a few discs, only time i ever got a negative on ebay was selling a CED disc. Don't bother, if you think VHS is good then get one otherwise it's on part with a bad VHS. Don't believe all the hype that you've read, i had a working player with a refurbished stylus from the people who do that thing. Didn't make a difference in PQ it was total junk. I hate bashing CED but one can't help it, save your money and get one of those Fischer price cameras that record onto cassette tapes, you will have more fun and it will retain value better.

Long term archivement doesnt mean playing and playing it again and again. It isnt a good medium to watch the same movies every week.
