The topic title says enough. Can UK CED players play US NTSC discs?
I can buy a CED player for a good price, especially since the never come aroud here and I suspect it comes from the UK.
If I buy it, I will be buying movies of the internet so most discs will be NTSC. So therefore the question...

Nope. (But first figure out what model it is, there's an off chance it's an NTSC one that made it across the pond)

(BTW, all VHD players play NTSC and PAL (edit: VHD) disks. JVC really did a lot of improvements to the idea...)

Nope, for one thing VHD's are 10" and not 12". It was kind of a non-sequitor, sorry bout that.

I asked the seller and it is a UK CED player with some PAL CED's. Ik still thinking about purchasing it.
It is a device that you don't see much in The Netherlands.

Did you buy it on the net or in some thrift store, or lp store?
Could you show pictures of the setup en picture quality?
I am curious, because i can't recall ever seeing one in the Netherlands.

I wish, then I'd have an excuse to buy one :)

I have a PAL player and it can NOT play NTSC discs. The turntable speed is different on each format.

Just so that you know, CED sucks. Don't be disappointed or anything.

I agree that they suck big time. Even a new sealed one will often stutter and skip several times within a movie. If you like an ugly picture then I would say these are certainly the way to go.

CED has some advantages, especially for long term archivement. 100 years into the future, when almost all Laserdiscs are unreadable, it still will be possible to play vinyl audio and CEDs.

Care to elaborate on that statement?

Its only a theory, but I alread have trouble to read my first CD-Rs from the late 90s, but also several CDs betw. 83-85.
Quite a lot of LDs were shelved in warehouses under not so great conditions.
The newest LD I cant read is from 1996. The first chapter isnt playing, but there are no scratches or marks on the LD.

I have bought shrinkwrapped CEDs, they play like new.
Ive bought some shrinkwrapped german LDs from the early 80s, every third title had problems with Laserrot.
I prefer the LD medium instead of CED, but for archivists I would recommend CED instead of laserdisc.

Playing like new is not the same as a good quality.
I had a player and a few discs, only time i ever got a negative on ebay was selling a CED disc.

Don't bother, if you think VHS is good then get one otherwise it's on part with a bad VHS.
Don't believe all the hype that you've read, i had a working player with a refurbished stylus from the people who do that thing.
Didn't make a difference in PQ it was total junk.

I hate bashing CED but one can't help it, save your money and get one of those Fischer price cameras that record onto cassette tapes,
you will have more fun and it will retain value better.

IMHO CED is about the most unsuitable format for long term archivement. A disc that, according to its creator Selecta Vision, was made for some 500 views?
Not to mention that the quality isn't exactly desireable for long term archivement.

As for LDs, if you want non-rotters, my advice would be to buy Japanese discs. I never came across a rotten Japanese LD (I came across a few US rotters despite owning much more Japanese LDs than American ones). That doesn't mean there are no Japanese rotters, but they are very few in comparison.

Long term archivement doesnt mean playing and playing it again and again.
It isnt a good medium to watch the same movies every week.
