Post subject:  Need help with an Hitachi AVC08U.

Back in June of 2011, Rixrex (on CEDmagic.com forum) advertised that he had some Hitachi AVC08U switchers/converters for sale. I bought one back then and have kept it knowing that some day I would be buying an HDTV and would be using the AVC08U with my CED players. Well, the day came a year ago last August when I bought a Sony Bravia 1080 HDTV .Some months ago I decided to get the AVC08U out of storage and do some experimentation with it.

To make a long story short, I found out that I could not use the the AVC08U's remote control. I did not have the keypad mapping for the remote. I had no idea what key did what. So, I am asking if anyone would have any idea which key on the remote does what on the AVC08U? (It has been so long that I do not remember if there was ever a keypad mapping diagram that might have come with the AVC08U).

Any help would be appreciated.

PS: The remote that came with the unit is a universal remote that was programmed by rixrex (I believe). It is NOT the original Hitachi remote mentioned in the owner's manual.

I have used the AVC08U with a Laserdisc player and the AVC08U does a very good job of up converting the composite video to HD so I know that the unit does work.

I’m away for XMas but if nobody responds first I’ll look into since I have the same unit and the same universal remote since we bought them from the same guy at the same time (I think).

That maybe the case. The remote I have is labeled "CHUNGHOP Learning Remote" if this helps. I did find that pressing Power and then CATV can power cycle the unit. That is about all I can remember when using the remote. Through a goof, I ended up with a second AVC08U unit from an E-bay seller. The second unit came with no instructions so it was of no help, If you have the key mapping sheet, maybe you could make a pdf of it and e-mail it to me?

Go to here: http://www.cedmagic.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1597&highlight=avc08u for the discussion on CEDmagic.com.

Right now, my AVC08U is setup to use composite 2 for input which is okay with me. I just worry that some day in the future I may accidentally press a button and the input will change and I will have no idea how to change it back.

I found out that the remote control Hitachi part number is CLU4981S. Amazon has a remote replacement.

Here is the web page: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N5XBGXO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1.

I have ordered one and will test it once I receive it.

In case anyone wants the owner's manual, go to: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=3&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiCiOXYwbzYAhWrYt8KHU8QAdIQFggzMAI&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.manualagent.com%2Fhitachi%2Favc08u%2Fowners-manual&usg=AOvVaw0NPkivsMN11N3oh57IhgaM.

I got the replacement remote a few days ago. I put batteries into it, aimed it at my AVC08U and pressed the power button on the remote and the AVC came on. I power cycled the AVC twice at which point the remote stopped working. I replaced the batteries with known good ones and the remote still did not work. I changed the AVC with one that I had bought a few months ago and that AVC still showed no response. It looks to me like the remote is a dead duck. I am going to send it back to Amazon for a replacement.

More later/
