Just started:

https://www.lddb.com/device/vhd

But I was wondering what features would be interesting to add to differentiate/qualify players?

So far I've seen 3D replay.

Are there more VHD-specific features?

Julien

Hi Julien,

Perhaps this connector on some players? It's what allowed for the MSX interface and also 'upgrading' non 3D players to 3D using an external unit.

Good point!

Was wondering what this exotic DIN13 was for.

Added!

Also added the 3D check box for compatible players.

I forgot to mention it's also where the PCM decoder attached for AHD. Not that that really went anywhere.....

I think mostly went prototype... but we can add the decoder as a new device if needed.

cool

I am a bit of an VHD nuts, I used to own something like 20 players and all the MSX accessories (no joke)
sadly I sold most of them, without making a picture first, like the AIWA, Sanio, Teac Toshiba players
now I only have National/Victors and no more peripherals

anyway
admin wrote:

if we're talking working, REAL features, then it's only 3D and VHDpc
all other is just prototype

I think you should add the VHDpc logo near the 13DIN connector
only top of the line, but older player used to have that connector, like the National DP-950 and Victor-7900
this twitter post posted a few pics and some info
https://twitter.com/outrunner_/status/910864643102576641

maybe you could add MSX peripherals as well to the database?
for example
https://www.msx.org/wiki/Victor_IF-7900

this page is also very nice and shows all the National players to date
http://807noomoide.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-51.html

MAYBE you could also add the QX logo
while the technology was never implemented on disc, the circuitry is there, in some players, like the National DP-870, possibly the best VHD player ever (well, along with the Victor V1)

That might be stretching the database a little too far from LDs and related format.

But definitely the Victor/JVC AD-7000 deserves a place here!

Really obscure stuff for most people. Maybe it should live in the comments section, adding further details?

Looks like AHD could either be DIN8 or DIN13?

That 9pin connector was used to connect the player to an MSX computer for superimposing
via an interface such as these 2
https://www.msx.org/wiki/National_DA-85
https://www.msx.org/wiki/Victor_IF-7500

now, why on the DP-850 there was a sole 9pin connector, that really is a mystery

just a wild guess
the DP-850 was one of the very first players for sale, the very first one from National/Panasonic
from 1983

maybe the AHD standard wasn't finalized yet?
MSX connectivity was the priority at the begin, Victor wanted to push their PCs as much as possible, as the competition was fierce

I am confused does the same port allow connection to a MSX computer that is used for VHD 3D? I have the DP-330 and never saw any reference to the msx computer only to the 3D module.

there were only 3 players ever to have the QX circuitry
other than the 2 you mentioned, there is also a Sharp one, however despite having the circuitry, it didn't have the QX logo, for some reason. I believe because it already was seen as a failed standard and Sharp just didn't bother, because this particular player was the very last to be released
I have read many report on those 2ch Japanese channels, only thing is....I don't remember which one of the 2, LOL
VP-X10B
VP-R20B

If I have to guess I would say the X10B, since it "seem" the most complete, it includes Dolby Surround decoder and VHDpc port (and 3D of course), the other doesn't
Anyway they certainly are the prettiest VHD players around

Since we're at it, we can also include the VP-3000, which was one the best selling player. No matter what day of the year you look, you will always find a VP-3000 for sale, either on Yahoo or other sites

The Toshiba VDP50K was also very successful and it has both 3D processing built in and VHDpc capability

yes, but it's indeed confusing

when it comes to 3D
In theory non-3d players can be made compatible through an adapter
however if you check that url I posted before not all of them have the 3D logo, only the DP-300 and DP-330 (on top of that the 300 doesn't even have an AHD port, so I suppose that was to be purchased separately and installed)
I really don't think older players can play 3D discs even with an adapter
Also adapters were only made by National and Sharp. In something like 10 years of searching I never seen a Victor one

when it comes to MSX
I THINK same thing applies, only other way around.
Victor and National probably dropped support quite early as the MSX connectivity wasn't as successful as they hoped, Sharp kept supporting it (that's why the X10B player still has the VHDpc logo) because its X1 PCs were still quite successful/popular

of course I can be 100% wrong on both
only thing to do is try
I used to have lots of fun with VHD games on a DP-950, then I sold everything and just kept the more recent players
and I never really bothered with 3D so I can't confirm about that either

The AHD decoder was standardized, released, and sold for a short period. The AD-7000 was more expensive than even the most expensive VHD player itself and didn't sell well at all. You can see my uploads from these discs here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... m3tKDrLKWD

I've also documented all the AHD discs I've come across in the database. I've also found Japanese white papers on the format.

So the decoder should be on the database. :) I can add information as needed.

admin wrote:

The AD-7000 only has a 13-pin cable I/O to the player. The DIN8 is odd and was likely unused. I'm on the look out for any VHD service manuals to learn the pinout. The cables are very sensitive to length and I'm assuming that's due to using incorrect cables/shielding or pairing the wrong cables.

VP-R20B

It can't be the VP-X10B since all QX supporting players do not support the AHD decoder and the VP-X10B has AHD written above the DIN13 port. It appears there was some kind of upgrade to the OSD common to the 870 & V1, which also likely applied to the Sharp player. Inserting an AHD disc into the National or Victor player, even with the decoder connected, flashes a "--" on screen, noting that the disc isn't supported.

kassan wrote:

I found a single QX disc, but it was a proto disc that came from the estate of an ex-Victor employee: https://www.lddb.com/vhd/01993/VRG-1460 ... ve-viewing

You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6qBKxc-gfY

So, once again, it should definitely be listed for folks since it is a feature, albeit a not so useful one.

Julien, it would be nice if you could also throw that logo into the VHD videodisc database too so I can add it to the above listing. Maybe more will be discovered in the future. :) P.S. I can give you my QX logo vector trace that I used for the YouTube video if you want a higher resolution image.

Some models have "IMD" markings. I believe they were for local interactive functionality (a la LaserDisc's LaserBarcode) and I've only seen semi-pro units with the logo. I could have swore the Victor BD-E7 was one such player but pictures of the player seem to not show the logo. Here is a remote with the logo: https://paypayfleamarket.yahoo.co.jp/item/z87312414

Some units have Karaoke mic I/O. See Victor HD-K3: https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/au ... 1018876326

I could have swore a couple models had FM transmitters for the rear channels on Dolby Surround units. Perhaps I'm just imagining things. Will update if I find proof.

Finally, at least one person owns a US market player: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jU9EYrkKEA

While checking connectors for new entries, I found at least 2 SHARP players with a DIN8 AHD label:

Sharp VP-2400
Sharp VP-X10B

Both covered with some plastic protection:

Definitely should!

I already added it as under "VHD Player" with a "Audio Processing" component but I don't know the specific connectors (not back view on your video!).

Funny that Sharp DP-X10B pictures (the ones for the info page on the X10B) are the exact same one I bought last month on Yahoo Auctions. This is my first foray into VHD. Stylus and needle are still intact but needs a belt replacement.
