Hi, I'm getting my VHD system setup and I've run into a bit of a problem. I'm pretty sure it's something to do with my Yamaha receiver. Let me explain. I feed the A/V from the Victor VHD into the line input of my Yamaha RX-A2020 receiver. The receiver up-scales to 1080p and outputs to a 55" Sony LDC TV. During playback, the picture will go black and after a second comes back on. It's not an issue with the disc, because it happens on all discs, and even happens on 2 different CED players. I know the issue isn't with the TV, because I just upgraded the TV and it does it on both. I don't have this issue when I run any LaserDisc player through the same input. If I pass the VHD signal through an external up-scaler (the crappy $20 jobs from Amazon), the "blinking" stops, but it stretches the picture out to 16x9 (and sometimes not evenly). Any suggestions on a video processor or up-scaler that will resolve my issue AND maintain the 4:3 aspect ratio? BTW, I can't simply run the Composite video to the TV... My new Sony only has HDMI inputs. |

My guess is the VHD sync is too crappy for your receiver to lock onto it. You you could run it through another device, like the pass through on a DVD recorder or a better than average VCR (anything with a time base corrrector and/or dropout compensation) and see if it works better that way. Btw, my 2017 Sony Bravia does a wonderful job with composite. Is your TV more high end than mine or more low end? Or maybe 2017 was the last year? I’d never buy an HDMI-only TV if I was the sort of person who collected junky old formats like this. |

I was thinking the same thing. My 2018 Bravia XBR-55X900F, I just looked again and it DOES have a composite video in. But it's on a 1/8" plug, not an RCA jack. Pulling out my handy-dandy converter cable, and ... Perfectly stable video. I tried adding video processing so the receiver is doing the up-scaling, but I can't seem to keep it at 4:3, and even worse, it add a fraction of a second of delay to the video and THAT makes me nuts. Bottom line is I think I'll still need to find an upscaler to fix the problem. |

That’s for sure a choice on my 2017 Bravia which also has an 1/8” TRS combo jack for all SD video. I have *zero* issue with LD on this TV and I don’t use any external stuff. It looks incredible. LD is a way better format than VHD though. |

Then don’t feed it a 1080p signal. Just plug it in. Your receiver may do a better job on composite video than current gen Sony Bravia tech but I doubt it. Just because something is external doesn’t mean it’s better. |

Just because something is external doesn’t mean it’s better. Clearly you've not read the thread. When I feed the raw signal into my receiver, I get random video blanking. I've tried adding video processing with the receiver, which corrects the blanking problem, but then the video lags behind the audio by 250ms or so. |
