Well, new to me. I bought a National DiscLord VHD Player w/3-D mode. It was shipped to me in Florida from Japan, and it works great! All three discs that I bought with it play perfectly, although Fangoria Video Magazine: Vol. 1 surprised me by not being in the LDDb yet. I've added it. It's in English with Japanese subtitles. After all of my experience with RCA's capacitance format (CED), it was a great relief to find that JVC's capacitance format (VHD) doesn't have the problem with skipping that CED has. It also has chapter search, with a numeric keypad built into the front of the player. It's a plus because It didn't come with the remote, although I did buy a (boxed) pair of the 3-D googles. They are being shipped seperately, along with a spare stylus. I wish that JVC had launched this format in the states. Had they done so it would have creamed CED, and given LaserDisc a run for it's money. And the discs are so lite, even in the caddys. You might think that a 10" VHD would weigh only slightly less than a 12" CED, but in reality THREE VHDs in their caddys feel about the same weight as ONE CED in it's caddy. I highly recommend this format! Here's is a YouTube video of the EXACT player that I bought! From the EXACT seller! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YKSbEuZ51w STAY AWESOME! |

Are the discs complete and with all inserts. So far all of the discs that I've bought (I bought 5 more) came with inserts. Do any of them support the 3D mode? STAY AWESOME! |

First and most important of all: Make sure who you are buying from. Check their feedback ! Read what other users said on the forum about them !! You sure you are still interested? |

I haven't found any feedback for him. After you posted your advice I tried to find feedback but didn't find any. I then checked out some of his other posts and discovered two things that I didn't know. That he apparently changed his account name at some point, and that his posts don't make much sense. STAY AWESOME! |

I've never bought from cararte but he has such an infamous reputation that if you choose to have dealings with him I'd advise extreme caution. |

After checking the number of cancelled purchases that he had agreed to make, plus the number of times he's changed his user name, I decided to just ignore him. Besides, there are other sources of VHDs that are much more reliable. Such as this company in Japan: http://www.urabanchou.com/ I've already bought over 50 LaserDiscs from them, and some VHDs too. I've never had a problem with them. Domestically I haven't had much luck finding VHDs, but then the above mentioned company gets a new influx of titles every week. As for LaserDiscs, I've had really good luck with: ABCLasers http://www.lddb.com/shops/debreeze/ A.J's Video Recyclery (LDs and CEDs) http://stores.ebay.com/A-Jays-Video-Recyclery Da Don's Rare Lasers http://dadons-laserdiscs.com/ I'm hoping that Julien will finally start allowing the shops here at LDDb to sell other formats covered in the database thru their LDDb shops. STAY AWESOME! |

I played my first VHD discs last week and surprisingly the sound quality of "Tina Turner - Break every rule" was very good. The picture is a bit less sharp compared to the LD though. I read somewhere that VHD discs do not have the skipping problem like CED discs but when playing "Tootsie" the disc started skipping after a few minutes. The Tina Turner disc played perfect though from beginning to end so I don't think its an issue with the player. I wont be buying many VHD discs though as I do not see any advantage over LD. It is fun to have though as a curiosity... |

It is fun to have though as a curiosity... That's odd in that I've bought quite a few and they have all played perfectly when they arrive. In fact most look stunning! Which brand of VHD player did you buy? I bought a National (aka Panasonic) DiscLord, but I've been told that the Victor players (aka JVC) don't ship well. I read (I think at VHD DiscWorld) that when a disc skips it's either due to a faulty player or a poorly made disc. I myself have been lucky enough not to come across one. VHD DiscWorld http://disclord.tripod.com/vhddiscworld/index.html VHD discs are far less likely to skip than a CED for several reasons: *CEDs have grooves. VHDs don't. *The stylus in a CED cartridge is a sharp point distributing the tracking force over a very small area which wears the discs out fast. *The stylus in a VHD player is flat, distrubuting the tracking force over a much wider section of the disc. *The tracking force used with the CED format is ten times greater than the amount used to track a VHD disc, so VHD discs last much longer. All that being said, no disc format is perfect. I have found over the years that CEDs are the most likely to be bad due to the practice of stacking them (which crush's the grooves). Next VHS tapes. Then LaserDiscs. Then DVDs. And then finally VHDs. That's been my experience though. STAY AWESOME! |

Before this week I've never even HEARD of a VHD player. I'm still not clear on what one is. I skimmed the Wikipedia article on it. They are smaller (<10") than LDs and CEDs, come in a caddy like CEDs, but only lasted from around 1978-1986, drastically less than LDs but I suppose longer than CEDs. What titles are on VHDs that make them worthy of owning? are there any movies on them that are not on any other media format? are they better than LDs? I'm very curious now. I have a friend that has a CED player. I have one CED because I collect media, but I have no desire for a player. They are notorious for not lasting, and a working one today is extremely rare, and the CEDs wear-out due to use. I plan to buy a VHD disc now, because I don't have one and I have to have one of every media that exists. How cheap can i find one, no preference of titles. |

check ebay, some are on there for cheap, it's the shipping that will get you from Japan. it did have 3D on some films like Jaws and others i can't remember. so that and Japanese releases like Godzilla stuff, but you can get most everything on LD i believe except the 3D stuff. |

I saw a few on eBay...but their covers are cardboard like LDs...I read they had caddies like CEDs...Wouldn't their Caddies be made of plastic? |

Recobanchou stocks almost 1000 VHDs and everything is in beautiful condition: http://www.urabanchou.com/index.php?mai ... Path=2_383 There are some music titles that were only released on VHD with no LD release. |

thanks for that info ldfan. i know that the movie titles i've looked at in the past were on LD other than the 3D and i'm sure some Japanese only stuff. i believe it's the disc inside of a plastic caddy like CED but then it has the cardboard sleeve to give more info of the film. |
