I know there has been one official release in Germany: "Point Break" with Patrick Swayze. The tape can be bought quite cheap and is not that difficult to spot however my superb Panasonic NV-121 SVHS player is currently, hence I am unable to play it should I order it. I think there might have been some releases in Japan. |

Has anyone seen s-vhs tapes for sale lately? I picked up a sealed copy of Godfather Part III that I would like to sell. Any ideas on the going rate? I've checked ebay but can't come up with any listed currently or completed. The box has nothing explicitly sating it is s-vhs except for a sticker on the outside. I found another forum pointing to these two posts: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic ... iW1eo5gnwI https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic ... iCcie2b37U It appears there might have been about two dozen releases. Original prices were about $40. Canyon Dreams --- $34.95 Desert Vision --- $34.95 The Worlds Below --- $39.95 Elton John --- $34.95 On Golden Pond --- $44.95 Sophisticated Ladies --- $44.95 The Emerald Forest --- $44.95 Scanners --- $39.95 White Mischief --- $44.95 The Rolling Stones --- $39.95 Jazz in America --- $39.95 The Last Emperor --- $59.95 A Chorus Line --- $44.95 Blade Runner --- $49.95 The Princess Bride --- $44.95 City Slickers --- $39.95 Misery --- $39.95 The Terminator --- $29.95 Days of Thunder --- $28.95 Godfather Part III --- $39.95 When Harry Met Sally --- $39.95 Star Trek II --- $39.95 The Voyager Odyssey --- $34.95 Robocop (evidently the first SVHS release!) --- $59.95 The Nutcracker --- $49.95 Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Letterboxed, Dolby Surround,D1 xfer) --- $39.95 Hunt For Red October Ghost Star Trek IV Top Gun Superman Nature's Symphony Nature's Serenade Water Colors |

Yes, we know what the S-VHS format is. We don't need to see a wikipedia article about it. We're talking about pre-recorded movies released on the format; a subject that amounts to nothing more than a blurb in that page. |

I most recently got my second original S-VHS tape. It is a demo tape released by JVC to show the quality of SVHS. I thought it was a very nice purchase.

Cool stuff. I have an SVHS compatible JVC VCR my old man found for me at a goodwill recently. It has S-Video out on it which is nice. Compared to my older no-name brand VCR and running through S-Video the regular VHS movies look better. It would be nice if there was a comprehensive list of the commercial S-VHS movies out there, but looking over this thread it appears as if there wasn't much information on it and didn't last very long. The worst part is that some of those movies listed may have only been mentioned in a catalog and never actually released or sold to anyone. |

I found the rare Japanese promo 1988, 1991, & 1992 JVC Jazz festival tapes on VHS & 1991 is actually in S-VHS I just posted it it on Discogs. My first pre-record S-VHS I've seen of any kind (used 1000's of the blanks back in the day with my music video biz). http://www.discogs.com/Various-JVC-Jazz ... se/7961098 |

That German S-VHS tape of Point Blank is cheap and easy to find but PAL, of course, just in case you are interested. |

I used to sell video equipment during the heyday of S-VHS and I am almost sure that pre-recorded releases were far and few in between. Super Source video did release some S-VHS titles (I remember playing a P&S copy of Robocop in my store) but it really went no where and I think they were only around for a year or so since there was no demand for it (consumers just stuck with VHS). In respect to picture quality of these transfers vs. LD, there is a good chance the S-VHS copy could be superior since the luminance and chrominance picture elements are recorded separately on the tape vs. LD combining the signal and requiring a good comb filter to separate the signal. However, one does need to use the S-Video output of the S-VHS deck to take advantage of that separated luma and chroma signal. Dave |

If anyone's trying to find some S-VHS movies/programming, found a few on Ebay, but they're asking way too much for them . . . The Terminator Misery JVC Jazz Festival '90 |

Found another old article in Video Magazine of interest. This one tells that movies were being released on S-VHS in Japan. I kinda figured as much as if they were being released in the US, more than likely there are some in Japan: However, they seem to be as rare as the one's released here in the US, as a couple of searches on Yahoo Japan, turned up very little. Just a bunch of lots for S-VHS blanks. |

For no reason at all I tried looking up some S-VHS releases on ebay and some have popped up. More importantly, some Japanese releases have surfaced. Of course, the sellers are asking way too much for them, but still neat to see titles on such a niche format: Always S-VHS JPN Terminator 2 S-VHS JPN (half tempted to get this one to accompany the Terminator US released S-VHS I have) Flight of the Intruder S-VHS JPN Backdraft S-VHS JPN Sea of Love S-VHS Bird on a Wire S-VHS JPN Biloxi Blue S-VHS JPN The Serpent and the Rainbow S-VHS JPN |

These are super cool. Looks like they are full screen with Japanese subtitles burned inside the image. |

tasuke wrote: oh, what the hell. myself, i just make my own S-VHS demo tapes using a DVD source; You should try the Blu-ray version of the same title and see if there is any visible improvements over the DVD source. I remember watching an interview with Yves Faroudja on this matter. He said they tried SD masters to make LDs and DVDs then they tried 2K masters to make LDs and DVDs. The LDs and DVDs from 2K masters looked significantly better. Of course, no mention of what downscaling algorithms they used. |

The T2 S-VHS seller lowered the price and accepted offers so I made a reasonable offer. He accepted! Surprisingly, the picture isn't fullscreen. It's letterboxed, but slightly raised to make room for the subtitles. |
