Of the people who own D-Theater VCRs, does anybody use them for watching movies, or more just a piece of your collection? I don't know too much about it, other than what I've read here and the videos online.

I own 70 tapes. They are so good that I didn't find the need to buy BD versions. Most titles are virtually indistinguishable from BD. There was only about 130 tapes total ever released. about 90 of them are films, rest are demo and documentaries. Just a handful concert tapes.

Some have high bitrate DTS audio which is pretty close to BD. No extras of any sort. They are all film only, barebones.

Some issues, occasional drop outs are common. Tape quality degrades over time and each playback=more drop outs. Most of the tapes are rare and expensive.

I watch my tapes on a "regular" basis.
It's not like I watch each movie every year twice but there are some specific titles worth owning. I Robot, True Lies, Entrapment, Alien come to mind.
Agree on PQ, they are BR quality. True lies has a stunning dts soundrack
Own 59 tapes so far. Looking for a few more titles but nothing that is superrare. I see tapes on ebay turning up on a regular basis. If shipping isn't a killer I buy one from time to time.
Sold a few that are of no interest to me. Got my first player with about 60 titles mint sealed. Own a few demo tapes but those are only sitting on the shelf here.
occasional drop out occurs but only once or twice during a movie. not disturbing in any way.

Very cool. I knew it had decent picture quality, but didn't know it was so close to bluray quality. Interesting hardware, though it seems like players usually go for high amounts. Doesn't seem like anything I'll be picking up in the near future.

Hm-dh30000u(no dts)
Hm-dh40000u
Hm-dh400u(industrial version of 40000u)
Hm-dh5u(hdmi)
Hm-dt100u(hdmi/atsc tuner)

All from jvc, these are the only models that can play d-theater tapes. There are mitsubishi units that can record and play d-vhs tapes that are not copy protected. All tapes with d-theater logo are copy protected.

Also marantz mv-8300 is exact same as hm-dh40000u in black(jvc is grey).

5u and 100u are the best models. Improved, much reliable mid loading transport. Hdmi output and dts support. 100u has built in hd tuner gor over the air only(useless in eu).

Bought another Hm-DH30000u just today on ebay. Power supply is bad! got one for spare parts so it 'll be an easy fix when it arrives. looks to be in very good cosmetical condition!

I am on the lookout for a Marantz MV-8300 (cloned hm-dh40000)
not an easy thing to come by in Europe I'm afraid.

my main player is the dts comaptible Hm-DH5u. solid picture and dts compatible. It's sad that one can't make a 30000u dts compatible

I'm always on the lookout for another spare dvhs (dtheater) player
these tapes are great to own

Thanks for the info substance. I was only aware of two D-Theater capable models. Much to the old ladies chagrin, maybe I'll keep an eye out for one of these after all.

Thanks for the info kris and substance, also thanks for the model info. Not the best model based on your list, but I picked up an HM-DH3000U. It seemed to be in good shape and the seller had photos of it in working condition. Now we wait and I see how it actually is when it shows up.

The HM-DH30000U is a fine unit despite the revieuws found online. I am aware the Power supply might be a spoiler sooner or later but any decent electronics repair centre should be able to fix that in no time. The caps on the PS aren't the best around I'm afraid. Then again, if it works , dont try to fix it.
I bought one last week with a faulty PS . have the spare one ready for installation. Got a "spare" parts machine from Germany some time ago. Videoboard turned out to be faulty. great machine for donor parts like in this case

Now own a hm-dh5u for the obvious dts reason. one mint new in the box hm-dh30000u
Let's hope the faulty unit shows up soon. it's mint with only the PS to replace. should be an easy fix

enjoy the format

Is Lord of the Rings on D-Theater?

Thought I would ask instead of the Google Search...

Trying to Dig up all my Wide-Screen Magazine reviews.

About 90 films. These are d-theater with copy protection. 35-40 demo/documentary tapes from hdnet. These are d-vhs only(not d-theater labeled) and not copy protected. Hdnet printed these on recordable blank dvhs tapes, labels are generic stickers(like homemade).

Hi grasshopper, I know there are people who know more than I, but from I understand, it is in 1080i. I was also under the impression there was a little under 200 movies released on D-Theater.

So, I guess what is the difference between Dvhs and D-Theater??

Its been so long! I guess time to read Wiki to see where I left off on the Dvhs years ago as I can't recall.

I believe D-VHS is the format and D-Theater were specific prerecorded movies? Anyone else that can divulge a little more on this?
