What is the difference between regular VHS and S-VHS? did this format pickup? |

JVC engineered the luminance carrier of regular VHS to higher resolution so S-VHS, when recording on an S-VHS tape (technically you can use a doctored regular VHS tape--but not really recommended) you get 400 lines of resolution rather than the 240 of regular VHS. However, the chroma carrier is unchanged so it doesn't have a whole lot of color. Check this video I made to see the quality differences between VHS, S-VHS and LD . . . VHS vs S-VHS vs LD It didn't really pickup because the hardware was too damn expensive and 240 lines of resolution was good enough for people with 20" TVs. Plus there isn't a whole lot of pre-recorded S-VHS programming out there. I've only got one--The Terminator |

realy? tvs were that small at 20 inches? i remember them more like 30 at least unless they are like kitchen tv or something. I will watch the video |

30" was really big at the time.... Only projection was larger... Kitchen or beroom TV's were mostly 14" to 19" |

I will watch the video Remote controls on TVs didn't become standard until the late 80s. So a lot of the face of most TVs up until that time had to make room for the VHF and UHF knobs. Thus, even if the TV had a wide footprint, maybe only 70% of the front was actually the screen.

14 inches? yikes! I was born in the 80's but I do not remember TVs being that small, unless you are talking about the 70's. My current laptop screen is 13 inches and I just do not see this big enough for a room. thanks all for the info |

For a kitchen or bedroom, 14" was large enough... (there were even smaller TV's) In a living room, 20" - 32" was normal, however, 32" was very large for that time! Nowadays, I find a 32" just big enough for my bedroom

rch928 wrote: realy? tvs were that small at 20 inches? i remember them more like 30 at least unless they are like kitchen tv or something. in the 80's, 27in. diagonal was the absolute ritz in CRT tech for the overwhelming majority. i was profusely lucky as a kid to have played my very first ever video games on one, my mother's wood swivel-cabinet 1987 RCA "DIMENSIA" model. now, MITSUBISHI was in fact on the bleeding edge of things in the late 80's with their 35" and even 40" diagonal CRT sets, but those were priced in the thousands, the 40" being around $10k, IIRC, definitely well out of reach of all but the wealthy and hardcore. for pretty much everyone back then, 27in. was the best one could aspire to in a conventional CRT, and if they wanted more, they started thinking about rear projection, not at all inexpensive itself at the time. in sum, 30+ inch CRT sizes did not really become commonplace, or remotely affordable to the masses, until sometime i the 90's, mid to mid/late, IIRC... |
