my 40000u has jvc there

is it possible that JVC are the only D-VHS players out there? I do not hear much other brand names and its usually between the 40000 and the 30000

they seem extremely scarce

there is a Marantz MV8300 which is an exact JVC HM-DH40000U clone in black.

I have seen Mitsubishi. I saw a Sony one on ebay currently but I am unfamiliar with that. JVC seems to be the easiest to find.

If you look up DVHS on wiki it was developed by Hitachi, JVC and Panasonic but I don't know or have not seen if those others made players.

Panasonic did! But don't know if Panasonic had D-Theater

D-VHS was originally a standard definition tape format. Only later it transition as a high def format. I bought in D-VHS early on in the 1990's, was great for timeshifting long programs. bought it again in 2001? when HD was available, as it was the only way to record digital HD, I was previously recording analog HD, rebought again when D-theater was more widely available in 2003 for playback of prerecorded movies. I didnt buy dvhs to playback prerecorded movies. I got it so I can record, there were no options for recording HD at the time, and no current prerecorded HD content.

I did some more research and I would like to know what your thoughts on the topic.

1) The VCRs themselves have been discontinued for about 12 years now. Given that they were very niche for a very short time period(2 years?), I am guessing units still available out there are very very limited in number. Not will only this make them very high in price, but my research tells me that they were not built to last and hence its hard to get a working one not to mention you will never know when it will die on you. What are your thoughts?

2) Are the DVHS VCR affected by the PAL/NTSC thing or any tape will work on any VCR?

3) Those with DVHS, are your tapes still clear? Any issues with them?

4)It seems that not all DVHS got HDMI so how does the picture output? In component?

5) I saw a video on youtube stating that when the format came out, many people opted in not for the HD quality but for the lengthy recording time to build an archive of recorded TV, and that there are huge archives out there made of DVHS. Do you think this is true, and what use are the archives if the system to play them are hard to find and dying everyday?

I haven't heard of anyone archiving a TV Show like that with D-VHS, but I can see the appeal since you can probably record a whole season of a Standard Definition show with no loss in quality on a single tape.

There used to be a lot of recorded 1080i HD broadcast DVHS tapes on ebay at some time.
A friend of mine bought several packs of tapes, and was not disappointed as they
were all full with movies, which back at that time did not exist on any other format in HD (yet).
By now it is probably safe to say most of the stuff is available on Blu-ray.
