the VHS tapes can range from pretty good to horrible but I think that is either the way its made or how it was kept. DVHS tapes on the hand are above good Since it was released in the US I doubt any play PAL. I know my JVC doesn't because somehow my mother had a copy of a Judi Dench movie (Macbeath ?) which was PAL how she got it is a great mystery to me at least.

The "Ultimate" VHS player sadly does not exist. I have a total of FIVE VHS machines hooked up right now in order to be able to play every tape I want.
The ULTIMATE machine would have: BOTH Hi-Fi AND linear stereo with Dolby noise reduction- 99% of Hi-Fi VCRs out there only play the linear tracks in mono. There are many music tapes released prior to 1984 and thus have no Hi-Fi tracks on them, so most people today have only heard them in mono. (I have a Panasonic professional-model machine that plays both tracks in stereo, but it only functions in SP speed. My consumer machine that had these audio capabilities broke, so I'm currently forced to have one Hi-Fi and one linear-stereo-only machine in order to play tapes recorded in the slower speeds.) Full multi-system compatibility- NTSC, PAL, SECAM, etc (I have one multi-standard VCR, though it does not have linear stereo.) Full D-VHS and D-Theater playback, as well as S-VHS and W-VHS (though I have never seen a W-VHS tape in person.)
There's a bunch of other 'fantasy' options I'd like to have as well, but just these would get me to buy another machine to replace the 5 I have now!

I've been doing some reading elsewhere - a lot of the pro decks (JVC, AG-1980) are very complicated and hard to keep in a state of good repair. The 1980 in particular has massive capacitor issues. Think Sony MDP-605 in LD-land, but with less goop wrecking the board, hopefully!
Which is too bad, since those pro decks are great at getting every last bit out of tapes. (But decks aren't good on all tapes, so to get the most out of all tapes, you needed more than one working high-end deck... which is very hard to have these days...)
The consensus over on videohelp, iirc, was to use mid-90's era consumer Panasonics, which aren't as good but a lot more reliable.
I found a Samsung version of that Panasonic multi-standard at a local thrift long ago, wonder if I can coerce it into working...

Nobody wants to record to VHS, anymore, it's a flawed medium to todays options. The only considerations in a VHS player is quality, quality and quality playback, preferable to capture into digital. Some folks may want a VHS player for viewing, but I would suspect that number is getting smaller by the day, and those folks are already out of the market having bought the player they desire. It's strictly an archival tool for the serious hobbyist. With that in mind, forget the remotes etc., I find the AG1980, one of the best. The detail it brings out is the best I've seen of any VHS machine. If your going to just have one machine for archival purposes, this is the one to have. For PAL, it's brother, is the other mother to have. Elvis

elviscaprice wrote: Nobody wants to record to VHS, anymore... excepting for weirdos such as myself, whom enjoy procuring top-flight NOS vintage blank stock, and using MACROVISION-less high resolution SD source material such as Anime DVDs to squeeze every last drop of performance out of the format i grew up with, just to see just how good it can really get, usually with surprisingly pleasant results ( for such a limited format ) such as this; (( 1985 MAXELL VHS blank (HGX GOLD HI-FI) both REC.ed and PBed on a 1988 S-VHS VCR (JVC HR-S8000U) )) - now you might contend that i am cheating, not using a CRT monitor for those examples, but i disagree. i've found that at least more recent HD monitors, -at least LCD, and probably PLASMA even more so- seem to tend to "tell the truth" with SD sources like no CRT i have ever known seems remotely capable of. my own 46in. LCD, -a low-mid grade WORST BUY "INSIGNIA" house brand model, with 3-D comb filtering- seems to lay it all right out on the table, -the good and the bad- with every SD source i have, crisp, clear, precise and absolutely non-partisan. i actually appreciate that; it shows me just how good -or bad- what i am viewing actually is, no matter the format. through an HDM, Laserdisc can be noisy even at best, but it can also be surprisingly good for it's age, and even by today's standards can impress, providing the viewer is able to accept the format's handicaps and enjoy it with perspective in mind to the age it was designed in, and that era's limitations. no, none of these old legacy SD formats can remotely touch high-quality HD sources, but at their best, they are surprisingly good performers for all that, and deserve due respect...

That's one person. You could do better by remaining in the digital medium. Just requires a different approach, but hats off to you for finding a unique approach with a dead analog format. Nice shots by the way!! Elvis
