Sometimes you can have benefits from a (possibly) better comb filter...
A recorder with TBC can improve the quality a bit, but it stays ultralow definition video
But it can be watchable

There is no dedicated VHS forums so i figured I post this here. I wanted to know if there is an ultimate VHS player/s that are considered the best for any reason, or is it that all VHS players basically the same? Any brands that are better than the others? |

I would take an S-VHS VCR over a standard VHS VCR. But really, you can only do so much with 240 lines of noisy, dirty resolution. From what I understand, this odd Blu-ray/VHS player does a bang up job with VHS too: Panasonic DMP-BD70V Blu-ray Disc/VHS Player Only a player though. No recording. |

Jvc hr/sr-w5u, sr-w320u w-vhs vcrs in sd mode can record 480i with % 30 higher bandwidth of s-vhs. You need special w-vhs tapes otherwise it records regular quality. They can also record in hd 1035i in component form. They are the only consumer electronics which allow hd recordings from component inputs. Due to limited bandwidth hd recordings are not up to todays standards but in w-vhs sd mode it beats sd dvds and lds by a mile. Only cons are w-vhs tapes are hard to find and no digital audio inputs. Only analog rca audio inputs but they are internally converted to digital pcm and recorded on to tape in digital form |

If you say that hardly any movies were released on Svhs then I guess finding a S-vhs player even harder . Will it output VHS in higher quality though? |

you don't need a good comb filter for VHS. luma and chroma are recorded separately they do not intersect in the composite video spectrum. any digital comb filter can separate them without any difficulty. S-video has the same chroma bandwidth but luma is increased by a little. It starts out at the same frequency but goes beyond the upper end of VHS. that's why regular VHS players cant play it adequately. A good tbc can help because tape can stretch during playback and can result in jitter. |

This is out of topic but since you all are well informed, can you tell me why one of the VHS tapes I have, the picture has continouse black lines coming from above to bottom and the picture jitters like it skips frames and its very irritating to watch. I remember this used to be fixed by something called scanning that is done automatically by the VHS player but I could be wrong... |

You would have to use the tracking feature of the VCR some do it automatically to try to get the best picture or you would have to press buttons on the remote or the front of the VCR itself. The VCR should have its heads clean even if they are clean I think it could be because of the age of the tape. |

If you want the best picture, especially on newer TVs, you want a DVD recorder. The better ones do an amazing job upconverting. If you want one that is physically more well made than most, you want something from the 80s or a pro deck. The picture will be nowhere near as good though, especially if it's pre "HQ" era. I don't know if there is anything that bridges these two worlds, I'd suspect not. |

I just happen to be lucky that my friend has a samsung VHS+DVD combo that he does not care about. I will try to ask him for it. I always looked down on DVD+VHS combo, I thought they were a bad novelty equipement that just wanted to "WOW" consumers and make them buy it. I thought it never worked right... |

Well, not all of them are created equally. If that's a VHS/DVD combo where the DVD section is merely a player, it won't be all that good as it won't upconvert/filter the VHS section. Only VHS/DVD recorder combos seem to do that (other than that crazy VHS/blu-ray player I listed above.) |

I own the last S-VHS recorder manufactured by Panasonic for the European market. http://www.amazon.de/Panasonic-NV-SV-12 ... B0002JZ8A6 I am very satisfied with it. Of course quality wise it is worse than Laserdisc but I find the Hi-Fi stereo sound on some of my tapes very satisfying and there are many great titles on VHS. The entire UK edition of Star Trek Deep Space Nine is excellent. The sound quality is almost CD like ( much better than Dolby Digital 2.0 ) and you can see that they tried to squeeze the maximum out of the VHS format quality wise. The picture looks really really good. To me the movie and the contents sometimes count more than Battleship with Rihanna in 1080p with a banging a** dts HD Master track.´ Some movies especially made for TV movies have neither been released on DVD / Blu Ray nor Laserdisc. The thing I like a lot about VHS that all of my original tapes basically show no wear at all. They still play like new. Even my recorded tapes still work very well. My recorder however does not play SECAM tapes in colour which is a bit of a shame as I own a Mylène Farmer tape and I can only watch it in black and white. |
