I am doing some reading on D-VHS and there is something that is confusing me, there seems to be a brand called "D-theater" that will only play with certain D-VHS players.

Can some one clear this up or all D-VHS tapes will play on all D-VHS players? Are there region locks? PAL/ NTSC?

D-Theater are pre-recorded movies with region lock.
Basically, D-Theater tapes (which were issued in the U.S.) only play on U.S. D-VHS units.
Ideally check in the manual of your deck if it can play those tapes.
Or let us know which player you have -> someone maybe able to say if it can play D-Theater.
Mine was a JVC HM-DH5U which also had the D-Theater logo on its box.

A jvc dvhs player with D-theater playback capability features a logo on the front panel for dtheater playback!
Don't let Mitsubishi players fool you, they are cheap but won't play a pre recorder D-theater tape!

Yeah, if your D-VHS deck has this logo:

You can playback D-Theater tapes. Otherwise, you can't.

Hdnet documentaries are d-vhs and non-copy protected. They are extremely rare. I managed to find about 10 in 5 years. All the rest are copy protected and dtheater

I've seen a few people selling D-VHS tapes as "blanks" while noting that they recorded HD movies to them. ;)

if you get a JVC HM-DT100U which normally sell for $800 lately. You can record broadcast TV using its built in ATSC tuner. ATSC is over the air antenna only but capable of recording 1080i or 720p HD broadcasts in Dolby 5.1 sound. To record from cable, you need a cable box with 2 way firewire output. none of the d-vhs recorders have component or hdmi input for hd recordings. most common tapes have 30gb capacity but there are some that can hold 50gb. d-vhs only recognizes mpeg-2 so watch out for cable channels which broadcast in mpeg-4(hbos for instance)

harddrive based dvrs rendered d-vhs useless. up until 5 years ago, d-vhs was the best way to archive tv shows and movies from cable. apparently hdnet aired unaltered star wars in hd some 10 years ago. some dudes who owned d-vhs decks at the time, recorded these showings.

Seriously ? they are that expensive?!

And who is the poor soul who bought a D-VHS player but didn't play D-Theater? Thats useless ...

D-vhs seemed to have so much support for something that sold so little, any one know the number of players sold?

When I bought my 40000u in 2008ish, it was selling on ebay constantly for $350 or above. Then a miracle happened, somw guy was selling one on Craigslist for $200. You almost never see any tape or player on local listing. I made an offer for $100. He took $120. He didnt know it could play hd videos. He was using it as vcr via composite cables.
Then I was on the look out for a 100u or 5u. 100u showed up only 5-6 times in 4 years always sold for $1000 and up. 5u went for $500-600. I couldnt spend that kind of money at the time i was more into bluray and hddvds.
past year and half i was in the look out more agressively. 2 or 3 100u showed up. Went for $850-1000 range. 5u were $400 to $600. I found a seller who had both and agreed on $450 for 5u and $820 for 100u both in original box. I thought hard about and ended up buying 5u. The only difference is the atsc tuner which i will never use but 100u looks cooler on the shelf.
i was interested but noticed 40000u and older models sold for $250 or less. 30000u are dirt cheap and there is always few listed on ebay.
I dont recommend any less than 40000u because of dts support. If you are into recording 40000u is more capable than rest. It has more recording modes. (40hr sd in single tape). 5u and 100u has hdmi out and the newer transport mechanism supposdly more reliable but i never had any issues with 40000u. I read 30000u are less reliable. 5u and 100u came out months before format officially died thats why they are far and between

The Dtheater experience is somewhat new to me.
It fell in my lap on a shiny day
I didn't think I would get into collecting these.
It didn't prove that difficult to gather info about this format. It's not like there are so many players like LD players anyway.
besides lacking dts playback my first hm-dh30000u works great
I got it almost for free and it only played 5 times before I picked it up. Box etc came along with it.
I was thrilled to see it working when I got home.
I feel in love with it that very day.
After reading about the 30000u doubtful reputation I concluded that it's mostly the power supply that is to blame.
Won't power up etc .. I read much of those complaints
I got a 30000u recently (for free since paypal refunded me and the seller told me to keep it) thinking it was an ok back up player.
It doesn't output any video , not even a menu but appears to be working.
It does output digital sound.
Since the player is in very good cosmetical condition I offered it to a friend for repairs.
It may be the PS gone bad. or a video output component.

Meanwhile I got me a dh5u that supports dts . I got some nice dts titles meanwhile
I love the DD/dts feature with the dh5u but I like the hm-dh30000u better. It's a beautiful looking machine. The dh5u isn't very nice to look at.

Besides no dts I have no complaints about my working hm-dh30000u. I use it about 2-3 time a month only for dtheater tapes.
I do use a step down voltage converter that I unplug when not in use!

D-VHS seems something for the super rich, the scarcity , the prices, and the old hardware is something tough to deal with. That is not to mention that D-Theater is not easily available . Maybe you will find some on ebay but not the titles you want.

There are titles almost always available. They sell for $10-20. I bought dtheater tapes as low as $6. Many of them are $20-30. There are some shows up sometimes and expensive up to $150. Then there is 20-30 titles that i have never seen for sale in years

dtheater tapes aren't scarce at all! they didn't sell very good IMHO. the format was destined to fade away into oblivion.
they really aren't that expensive if you're carefull with buying.
Some titles sell for some money. typical I robot might be the more expensive one...
There's one on ebay right now at a very reasonable price.
it's one of the best releases available. PQ and sound are stunning.
I got true lies for about 25 usd delivered at my doorstep.
I got it from ebay us.
I'm in Belgium... expensive? I paid twice that for some regular Blu ray releases....

Some titles are hard to find but none of those have my interest to be honnest. I'm not the kind of collector looking for any kind of dtheater tape. there isn't much available unlike with laserdiscs. there is much around but I don't think anyone wants them all... do they?

Most expensive tape I grabbed back in the day was "Alien".
Always wanted "Mulholland Dr." but prices were way over $200 back then...
These prices have very likely changed nowadays because the movies are
available in Hi-Def on BD (and some HD-DVD even :P).
"Ghost Dog" was one of my faves.
Also "Lost in Translation".

I have a JVC DVHS HM-DH4000U VCR and I did have some blank tapes and some movies though all I have left is ALIEN.

Does anyone know why at least I suspect the JVC badge covered up and have a DTheater logo over it? It that normal or is mine unique?

It does say JVC on the back not front/ it seems where Dtheater sticker is covering possibly the JVC logo. I have seen others who have the JVC logo but for some reason I do not
