D-vhs is the tape type. It was originally designed to be 480p. data is stored in digital opposed to analog on other vhs types. Tape sizes vary from 25gb to 50gb. Later 720p and 1080i were added as supported resolutions. Various bitrates are supported(as low as 2mbps).

D-theater is the format movie studios brought to the medium. 1080i video at 28.2mbps constant bitrate, dolby digital at 640kbps(dvd is 488 kbps) and 2ch lossless pcm are mandatory. Dts at 1.5mbps(highest rate possible) is optional. D-theater tapes are copy protected. Only the players i listed above can play these tapes. D-vhs only vcrs cant play them.


Both dvhs and dtheater are mpeg-2 encoded. There are a few dvhs prerecorded tapes in 720p, most are 1080i. Up to hd tivo and dvrs, dvhs was the only way to record hd cable and satellite. Dvhs recorded hd programming bit to bit in digital. Connection was via firewire between the cable box and dvhs vcr.

Dtheater formatted prerecorded films were released between 2003 and 2004. They were around $40 each(street price). Almost every dtheater title is released on bd. Only worthwhile exclusives are

True lies 1080i/dts
Time machine(2002)1080i/dts
Mulholland drive 1080i/dts (bd available in eu)
Ghostdog 1080i

Total recall and titan ae were announced but cancelled later. Above tapes and good ones (i.e alien)are rare and expensive($50+ if you find them)

DTheater are pre recorder copy protected movies! You need a dvhs player bearing the DTheater logo! No playback possible on dvhs only machine!

Dvhs are the "regular" blank tapes. Only HD net released these available for sale.

Thank god they didn't release much on Dtheater tapes. I would not know where to put them all :crazy: :lol:

The tapes I own are the ones I really want in my collection. I don't want/need every release available.
