Hi, new user here, found the site looking for some LaserDisc info, but go distracted by HD-DVDs. I've been meaning to go thru my collection to see how much of it is rotted, for literally years now. Finally got motivated/bored enough last weekend after reading some older threads on the subject here. Seems the theory of most Warner releases and few others being affected holds true, but the idea of only _American_ Warner discs rotting does not, at least in my quite limited sample, UK/EU Warner disc were just as likely to be bad (chances are for many of these, the US release is identical, as quite a few HD-DVDs seem to have European language options on US discs too). Discs were tested on PCs with LG GGC-H20L/GGC-H20N drives plus an Xbox 360 / Toshiba USB HD-DVD, using IsoBuster's Surface Scan function (should be a more comprehensive test than just playing the movie, I use this on all second hand CDs and Blu-rays - and PS1 games etc - I sell or buy to avoid disappointments). Any disc that failed was cleaned and re-tested on another drive. Here are some results, divided by distributor: Warner: 15 titles tested, 12 rotters Rotten: Blood Diamond (2006) [111764], US Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut (2007) [114352], US, both discs rotten Clockwork Orange, A (1971) [80953], US, both discs rotten Blade Runner: 5-Disc Complete Collectors Edition (1982) (Uncut) [118573], US, All 3 HD-DVDs rotten, both DVDs OK Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) [76454], US License to Wed [Z1 Y16071], UK Swordfish (2001) [Z1 80943], UK Reaping, The (2007) [Z1 81033], UK Dukes of Hazzard, The (2005) [Z1 80928], UK Flags of Our Fathers, UK, Dual-sided (Not on LDDB, submitted) Matrix, The: Complete Trilogy (2007) [Z5 Y17236], GER, Combo, All 3 discs rotten, DVD sides work fine. 300, FIN (Not on LDDB, submitted) Still OK: Universal: 27 titles tested, 2 rotters Rotten: Paramount: 7 tested, No rotters Others: 13 tested, 1 rotter Rotten:

If I had several LG GGC drives I would probably feel motivated to run the same test on my discs. But unfortunately I only have one such drive

Yeah, I bought a couple of GGC/W drives some years ago (30-40eur each on eBay), mostly because before hearing of the Warner rot issue, I thought it was my drive that was dying, not the disks. So now I have two GGCs at home and a GGW at work. Haven't been able to find any other makes or models of HD-DVD/BD -combo drives on the used market for some reason, guess these were the most common ones.

Made the same mistake/wrong assumption and imported an Integra DHS-8.8 on top of my my Toshiba HD-A2. Just to realize that problem was the (mostly at that time) USA Warner releases! So I sold the Toshiba to recoup some of the Integra costs. Julien

I just recently hooked up an HD DVD player to my TV, it's been a few years since I last watched my HD DVDs. I really enjoyed it, and now I am going though discs I never watched when I bought them. So, I have watched these the past few days:
Mulholland Drive (2001): I think I had just watched this in the theatre, and although I really liked it, I didn't get round to the HD DVD. It is still a fantastic, if very confusing movie. Looks great on HD DVD.
Dawn of the Dead (2004): Zack Snyder's good zombie flick. I like both the original and this remake, and needed to watch it after the abysmal Army of the Dead. Very nice video quality.
V for Vendetta (2005): I remembered this as a much better movie. It is still good, but I don' really understand why I enjoyed it so much back in 2005.
The Last Samurai (2003): I've seen some Twitter discourse about Tom Cruise playing a white saviour, but I think the movie is more about the negatives of US imperialism than a celebration of it. I liked this one better than I remembered. Some very good battle scenes. This is Warner disc, and it sputtered a few times, so I had to FFWD a couple of places.
The Getaway (1994): This was... not very good. The movie looks great, but there is really no reason to watch this remake. There is a cool scene with a garbage truck.
Chronos (1985): This is just 40 minutes of eye candy. Beautiful.
Terminator 3 - Rise of the Machines (2003): God damn this was worse than I remembered. I liked the ending. I liked that Kristianna Loken inflated her b**bs to distract a policeman. And that's about it.
P2 (2007): The last official HD DVD release. Looks good, interesting thriller/horror movie.
Grand Prix (1966): Looked gorgeous for five minutes (excluding the prelude), and the the disc failed. Warner from USA...

Julien Can't find any info regarding manufacturing place on the disc, and I have no knowledge about what Warner usually does (or "did" in this case). Does anyone know if Warner manufactured their Nordic HD DVD discs in US?

Gave another watch to Top Gun (1986) [13055], preparing for "Maverick". Paramount => plays perfectly fine. Julien

The non-playable came in a box of random HD-DVDs I bought in bulk. The playable one I bought from a bin of discount DVDs at TJ Maxx!
