Post subject:  Toshiba and DVD upscaling

Reading a lot on Toshiba and their HD-DVD players. Mostly that the upscaling capabilities for standard DVDs on their HD-DVD players were superb.

I'm about to finally breakdown and buy an Blu-ray player. An all-region player to be exact (because I have to have my imports), and was thinking of getting a Toshiba for the above reason. Can anyone confirm this? Were the upscaling capabilities of the HD-DVD players overstated? I plan to use this player as my main DVD player as well since I have a lot of import DVDs (and I'll retire my trusty Skyworth 1050D Prog Scan DVD player to my bedroom.)

Take a look at the OPPO blu-ray units.
They can easily be made region and zone free, and their DVD upscaling is superb.

I do have an OPPO BDP-83, and a TOSHIBA HD-XE1, which is always rumored to be
"the best player ever made", and I have to say most of it is rumors.
It's loud, it's annoying, it's nothing special.
The OPPO was the real deal for me, really satisfying.

Well, I'm thinking the Toshiba because I can get a good deal on an all-region one right now; like ~$100US.

lons_vex is absolutely right in everything he´s saying about Oppo and the Toshiba Unit.Ok, I wouldn´t be too harsh on the upscaling qualitys of the Toshiba player, it´s doing good. I have an Oppo BDP-93, it´s region free for both BD and DVD and working like a charm.Besides that, I see that you don´t wanna spend too much money, so if you just need it for playing your DVDs, this player will be alright. Since it´s been a while ( + 4 years) since Toshiba excelled with it´supscaling technolog in HD-DVD Players, I´m sure a new BD Player will work out quite as well.

I have a Xe1 & Toshiba BDX-3200 region free. The upscale on the 3200 is ok, but I mainly use the Xe1 for all my DVD upscaling :D 60's Mission Impossible looks gorgeous on the Xe1.
