In looking for HD-DVD's on Amazon.com, I came across "Fifty Shades of Grey, A XXX adaptaion" on HD-DVD dated 2012.

Are HD-DVD's still being made today?

It's a real tragedy isn't it

The potential was there.

If the discs are not being made today, explain why the "50 Shades of Gray" movie is being sold on HD-DVD by Amazon.com and is dated 2012? Perhaps, someone is making limited runs of the discs?

This is an unlicensed p0rn movie based on a terrible book. They are probably just hacks using incorrect terminology. I seriously seriously doubt they even know what an HDDVD is.

Chances are its a regular DVD made from an HD master. Such things are not uncommon. Or, they just slapped "HD" on their crappy product because they thought it sounded cool. Since there is no hard legal definition of "HD" you can put it on anything. HD soap, HD galoshes, HD nose hair trimmer, HD ketchup.

I agree,
I don't think anyone out there still manages to produce real HDDVD's
I wish someone could... :geek:

Considering the errors I have seen on e-bay, I think that the seller of the 50 shades disc is mistaken and is selling a DVD, not an HD-DVD.

I have seen CED players being listed as laserdisc players on e-bay so such an error is very very possible.

I do agree that it would be great if someone was pressing HD-DVD discs today.

Actually, there are some places still burning and selling HD DVDs in English. Very limited runs. You can see one of them here:

http://socalemc.com/store.htm#!/~/categ ... rt=nameAsc

They have a couple of interesting films, and a good price discount if you buy an HD DVD and DVD together.

Also, in China, HD DVDs are still being produced since the government there doesn't care about copyright enforcement, and the HD DVD players were a big thing there (aka CH DVD). manufactured there, and are fairly widespread. Strictly for the Asian market, not in English.

It might turn out that HD DVD ends up something like CED, with a fair sized disc library, and quite a few players sold. It wouildn't be too hard to collect most of the discs released, but the burned discs, like Zombie Farm, will be pretty rare so HD DVD enthusiasts ought to buy their copies now while they can.

The real tragedy is that Sony (in the US) was allowed to break anti-trust laws and use graft and payola to force the acceptance of BR discs over HD DVD. If left to true free market forces, BR would not have killed HD DVD.

In the meantime, our lawmakers passed the unaptly named Patriot Act, our Justice Dept. was too busy pushing programs that only annoyed regular citizens at airports, and suing states whenever the state wanted to pass or enforce laws that the administration didn't like. Pretty much a "cold" version of a civil war.
