RD-A1 HD DVD - Yahoo Japan Auctions

Equal to US$600, not too bad. Better stock up on these too, if you plan on getting that . . .

that thing is a beast. that would be awesome to own even since HD DVD didn't make it. Are BD recorders like that?

I usually go through http://celga.com/ to get stuff from YJA. But since you're in Europe, not sure if they'd be able to work with you.

I'd stay away from it.
Try to import one from yahoo auctions japan.

Left the hddvd format some years ago meanwhile.
I was fed up with all the issues ... disc rot, Firmwire trouble.
Only good working machine was my HD-XA1 after installing FW 4.0
Don't regret getting out of the game. Horrible discs and support.
The discs that did work were amazing but since I like reliable hardware and software I'm glad selling it.
Just bit the bullet and sold my Dvhs collection. Focus is on LD and UHD.

When this tread was recently bumped I looked on Japan Yahoo Auction and found a Toshiba RD-A1 for sale. So I did what any self-respecting obsolete format hoarder would do and imported it.

It arrived a month or so ago. It was pretty beat up. When powered on the GPU fan sounded like a roulette wheel. And then displayed error code ER7061. I believe this code refers to a faulty HDD. So I went ahead and replaced both HDDs. Well the ER7061 code no longer displays. I'm sure I need to format the drives somehow. My biggest obstacle is the manual and all the menus are in Japanese with no option for English. I've resorted to using a phone with picture Google Translate. Supposedly there is an option in the menu to format the drives. I have run what I think is the format but it shows an error message just short enough on the screen that Translate can't pick it up.

That's where I last left off with this project. Currently it is in storage because my house is on the market and apparently having a disassembled carcass of a once professional-grade HD DVD recorder strewn across my desk is off-putting to potential home buyers.

Interestingly enough, the GPU fan is the exact same model used in the period correct Toshiba Satellites. Off-the-shelf parts mixed with hardware and software design similar to that of previous Toshiba DVD recorders all in a rushed attempt to supply a demand requested from the launch of a competing, next generation, video format? There may be hope for me yet.

Here is a video of the front opening and closing. "Me want cookie!!!" (The video is on its side to further prove I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing.)

I have a pristine RD-A1 that I got when the HD DVD team @ Microsoft folded. I did not get a remote, but it powers up and the front panel goes up/down. No success in getting a video signal though, do you have any recommendations? I believe the UX will all be in Japanese if I could see it.

I am using US 110V but in theory it needs a Japanese 100V feed. I don't know if anyone ever used it on the team, I didn't even know we had it until that last day of the "fire sale" when all of the hardware and software was given away to the team members. That was a sad day indeed. I also picked up a cool framed poster of the RD-A1.

Following a suggestion from makmak16 I connected it via RCA and it boots up fine. I inserted a retail disc but could not get it to play. Without a remote I'm not sure what more I can do. (Bonus points for noticing the black Xbox HD DVD drive).

The solution to all your problems: get the remote.
Yahoo Japan might be a place to find one every now and then.

I see Xbox 360 Star Wars Limited Edition console 8-)

I know the black 360 HD-DVD drives are considered rare and desirable, but are they really any different to the standard ones?
I've seen people paint standard drives black

Great idea, found and ordered one, thank you.

No, the drives are physically the same, but it also came with a black media remote which is equally rare.
