Arrived today on HD-DVD is the crime action adventure "SNEAKERS"

Sneakers (1992) [61032864]

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105435/

The Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 discrete is leap over the PAL laserdisc pressing I have.

Picture tone is about the same as the laserdisc only the HD-DVD has little or less artefacts noise that shows up on the PAL laserdisc.

Writers credits Walter F. Parkes, Lawrence Lasker "Wargams" "Twister" and "Gladiator" writer director Phil Alden Robinson "Field of Dreams"

 A radio shack SPL db metre with an added bit fitted to it to make it look like something else.

Picture. With the contrast/brightness set on the TV for most normal looking films, this one would appear too dark even with daylight scenes. I wouldn't put the issue to the transfer as simple Rise the Contrast/Brightness for the film, solves the issue. Theefore I'll change the rating from 4 to 5.

Sound the discrete is clearer with centre stage and some occasional dialouge pans to stage left/right as well as effects. Rating I've changed from 4 to 5.

"SNEAKERS" covers I like the style on NTSC cover.

The HD-DVD cover keeps it close to the original artwork.

Just took these pictures off the CRT this morning.

PAL is framed at 1.66:1 HD-DVD looks like its around the 1.85:1 the framing on HD scenes shows a little less height and little more on PAL and more width on HD.

Spectrum Lab THX test.

Image
PAL LASERDISC LCR analouge from Dolby CP500 SONY SELECT 7

Pitch is faster by 4% speed up

Image
HD-DVD Onkyo, output DOLBY DIGITAL PLUS 5.1 SONY SELECT 6

Pitch is slower and lower on the lows

The PAL range with the repeatable bass drum beat should hit, in the chest and its strong range for mildly quiet scene 51Hz to 56Hz and lower by a few Hz on the HD-DVD due to slower pitch.

The PUCK does a good job of the drum beat in the seats.

Actually, its not slowed down pitch on the HD-DVD, its the correct pitch whereas the PAL LD is the incorrect, sped up pitch. I only bring that up, not to be nit-picky, but in case someone reads your post and gets the idea that the HD-DVD is somehow wrong and the PAL LaserDisc is the correct presentation.

Yes I had the same remark to make. The pitch is sped up on many PAL releases.

Anyway awesome post laserbite !!!! I really love those comparisons. Thank you.

No sweat. :)

Its a film I have watched many times over the years firstly I think on VHS rental then when I bought my first Pioneer laserdisc player, this was maybe the 4th or 5th film LD bought in 1994.

If I had a way on the AVR to adjust each video mode colour contrast brightness gamma hue and so on. I think not too sure the later Onkyo, models have some isf thingy to adjust or cater each mode so they can at least be within shade of each other.

I could adjust for PAL LD to come near to HD-DVD the HD-DVD seems to be up a few notches.

Later on today I raised contrast and brightness. No need for colour and the film looked a lot clearer. Afterwards I set the levels back down.

The NTSC pressing of "SNEAKERS" should have less artfacts noise in the colours that shows up faintly, on the PAL pressing.

"STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS" I except to arrive in the post in the next few days.

"OBLIVION" bought it today but I haven't played it yet. Watching "APOLLO 13" on region 2 DVD and some original STAR TREK on region 2 DVD.
