Post subject:  Talk about BAD timing...

Two days ago I received my 'new to me' HD-DVD player and just finished the threads here and other forums about the 'rot' issue. Thankfully I only have 10 discs and one on the way. Tonight I viewed one disc and both it and the used player are fine but I think I may have to get away from HD-DVD before putting any more $$ out.

Am I jumping the gun on this or should I cut and run?

The rot issue only appears to affect Warner discs released on the American and European markets. I assume Japanese warner releases do not have that problem. Since I will be in
Japan this month I might check it out to see whether the discs come from the same s****y plant.

Some Warner releases however still work for me ( I checked today ) such as A Clockwork Orange and The Fountain. The others won't even load. It seems a few discs are not affected
by this issue.

Single Layer releases from Warner ( there are some but rather few of them ) do not have that problem such A Scanner Darkly, Lady In The Water or Les triplettes de Belleville.

Besides that I think there aren't any issues with other releases as they were manufactured in other plants.

What I do is I try to backup all of my HD DVD discs I have using an HD DVD ROM drive and AnyHD and leave the discs inside their original cases. I do the same with my DVD collection which
I am backuping to two separate hard drives. This way I do not have to worry whether a certain disc will still play or not. I can always play it from my hard drives and I alway mirror the data.
I think that is totally legal and fair. I do the same with my CD collection. The only thing I do not backup is my Blu Ray collection as today's hard drives are simply too small for a backup of a large collection.

Tried my second HD-DVD tonight; locked up the player about 23min in and I had to unplug the unit.
A Universal disc as well so I think this is indeed a systemic issue.
