So I think/thought HD DVD was cool back in the day, but it was on it's way out by the time I started thinking about getting one, and that was that. In my time on here, I see that some members still use and enjoy their HD-DVDs, but I was wary because of the disc issues people had, so I was okay with not collecting them. Then in my weekly craigslist searches I ran across this: https://seattle.craigslist.org/est/ele/5028596538.html If it's legit I might be interested. I know it's not one of the best rated players that I read about, but for $50 I'd be willing to take a chance. Plus there's a shop near by that has a bunch of HD-DVDs for $2 each. I emailed the seller, we'll see if I hear back. |

Also in hindsight I imagine this listing is fake. So yeah. Go me. |

There's many members who still enjoy HD DVD, including myself. There's many movies to collect and most are perfectly fine. I have over 300 US discs (and multiple imports) and always pick up copies if I'm out and about and come across them, usually for a buck or two. Luckily there's still quite a few stores locally who still carry used copies. Another good thing for you is players are really quite cheap. A few weeks ago I picked up a mint/complete Toshiba HD-A30 at a flea market for 5 bucks to go with my growing collection of players. Any given day Craigslist has many HD DVD players (usually with tons of discs) for dirt cheap. I used to be into the whole Blu-ray vs. HD DVD a few years back, but honestly...... HD is HD. It looks great on both formats. I say go for it. You'll make out like a bandit on prices right now. |

I'd probably just get the 360 accessory drive. |

I'm leaning more towards it. I was wrong about it being fake. The seller seems like a nice lady who lives a little north of me. Might go check it out this weekend. Worse case scenario I'm out $50. Not the end of the world. |

$50 is a bargain I could live with. You'll like it. |

looks like a real decent player, especially for $50 NIB. virtually a no brainer IMHB. in any case, you'll surely have yourself an above average DVD player, if nothing else... |

Well I caved in and bought it. I know its not a big deal, but it's pretty cool to run across a still sealed HD-DVD player. The A1 seems to be one of the physically bigger players that Toshiba made, oh well. My next question is will it play movies out of the box or will I meed to upgrade the firmware? |

Check the toshiba website. I think it's up and running concerning the 4.0FW update. Worst case you can get the FW discs trough ebay from a seller in the UK. I've purchased all FW updates from him and they're You need to enter the menu and see if the current firmwire reads 4.0 in the end... Most lickely it needs the update since it's NIB . Believe me firmwire 4.0 takes care of discs freezing and other known issues with hddvd.... Another tip, I would avoid most of the Warner releases. They're horrible Good luck |

That is an older generation player so your video will be 1080i60. Until the 3rd gen players, the mpeg decoder chip toshiba used didn't handle 1080p24. Second gen flagship xa2 was the first to output 1080p60. It literally de interlaced the 1080i60 stream coming from the mpeg decoder. Fw2.7 and on allowed direct stream of 1080p24 from the mpeg decoder on certain players. I believe this is not one of them. Lossless codec support also is from late 2nd gen and on. So you will be limited to dolby digital plus on this player. But vast majority of the titles don't have dolby hd or dts hd |

I own 3 hd-a1 players and the mighty hd-XA1. I love the XA1 look. built like a tank! I had issues with discs freezing before I upgraded to FW 4.0. Believe me, it's worth getting the latest FW. When upgraded the player is going to decode True HD internal and output it trough it's analog 5.1 output. that sounds A word of advice, power up the player and let it boot as long as it takes. never touch any of the buttons before it reads "no disc". it's sluggisch but a great performer once running. you'll be surprised by the audio cd playback . It is on a side note for some strange reason some cd's don't work. I own "queen greatest hits" and for some strange reason the 2nd disc doesn't work... plays fine on my other cd devices... I learned to live with that it's one of those things I guess |

You should see a teardown of this thing - it's a very expensive design. It's almost like an HTPC, including a mobile(sic) Pentium 4. |

So far I've been pretty happy with the player. Physically it's bigger than I expected, but it's charmed me and I kind of like it. I haven't watched many HD-DVDs on it, but it's great at playing regular DVDs and the sound from it seems to be pretty good. Also the remote is definitely the biggest remote I've ever owned. Love that HD-A1 remote. It's so slick and nice combo of black background and white buttons. The HD-E1 (European equivalent) has a very cheapish remote by comparison. |

It's growing on me nissling. Despite the length, it actually feels right and is use friendly. I think it looks better than the other HD-DVD remotes I've seen. |
