You can add Santana, Hymns for Peace, Live at Montreux to the unplayable list. My player (Toshiba HD-A3 with firmware 4) does not recognize it at all.

This may sound strange but...
wash it down
I've done this with a disc that came mint sealed. Washed it with a gentle detergent. It plays great now

Thanks for the suggestion; but, it did not help. My player gives a 408bc504 error after about 4 minutes of trying to access the disc's menu.

My "Harry Potter 1-5" box is dead as well.

First movie crashes after ~8mn.

I have mentioned it before but i have never had issues with any discs. In saying that i have had issues with my Toshiba player but i put the same disc in the Xbox HD DVD drive and they worked.
If you advise which discs are manufactured in Japan i will check my collection.
I have a lot of HD DVDs pending that i have added to the database that were not listed so they maybe Australian releases? They have been pending for 6 months or more so i guess they are not acceptable additions to the database???

We are only talking here about the US/Canada WB titles manufactured at the USA Technicolor plant.

I have not looked into the manufacturer of the discs other than testing my WB discs.
But i am willing to test further for you guys. At least half of my 160 HD DVDs i bought from the US.
If you provide the LDDB links to the movies i will match the ones i have and watch them all the way through.

That is why I would like to know whether the Japanese titles were manufacture in Japan. In that case I would get a new copy of A Scanner Darkly from Japan.

I've been experimenting with players for years.
Never had issues playing with the tosh HD-XA1 or A1

I think something hardware related is failing at some point

someone here also mentioned this.
It is strange to see my first gen players working fine with all discs. fw4.0 did the trick.

I only trust the XA1 or A1 running FW 4.0. not once a freezing problem!
I watch hddvd's on a very regular basis.
Only my Lethal weapon 2 refused to play on any machine. owned many ep-10, e1, ep-30, ep35 players.
I rather believe it is just that specific title that has a flaw then al machines not spinning that one title!

Unpluging a player when not in use can resolve freezing issues . Stuck in standby is a common failure! i saw the error code more than once with my previous players. always after 10 min. or at the end of a movie it would freeze and display the error code.

Again,
almost sure it's player related causing this

Hi Kris i agree it has to be hardware firmware related i have a number of the German discs fantastic four etc all work fine in the xe1 but tend to stutter or freeze on the LG-BH100 LG never really put any effort into firmware updates

Hey julien. I tested your player with 300. It played back the entire film 3 times back to back with no glitch. There are 2 versions for 300. Hddvd only and combo (dvd on one side). I have both I dont remember which I used. Generaly flipper discs are problematic (even on blu). So it must be your 300 disc.

I have the combo edition of 300 and... I tried the DVD side last night thinking "OK, the HDDVD bricks my player, but at least I have the SD side!".

Turns out the DVD layer will start having skips/blocky video from ~40mn and eventually freeze as well. And I'm not playing it on my HDDVD Player but on my trusted DENON DVD Player.

Shame on you Warner.

Opened up a sealed copy of Under Siege last week.
No luck playing that one. it won't load. this is the second new disc that refuses to load on my HD-xa1
Lethal weapon 2 being the other nasty little....
Own about 240 hddvd's . Only these 2 sealed ones are giving my trouble :eh:

Warner... :( :( :(

That is a huge list, thats is like half of the HD-DVD library.

I got Corpse Bride and Planet Earth from an Ebay seller. Corpse Bride and Disc 1 in the Planet Earth series will not run. Any one know if I can fix this? Is this considered "rot" ?

The Discs do not seem to be heavily damaged. With DVD's, usually they would run but skip. Any one know what this is?

I regret getting HD-DVDs. Expensive players (relatively), small and weak library, and defected discs. Its true that I wanted to experience the medium, but you really do not feel much different than running a Bluray. Its not as if the experience difference between VHS and DVD for example.

Watching "Ocean's 13" last night... deadly rotted. Both sides. I tried DVD side with 2 different players: rotted.
I'm trying to rip DVD side on my PC... slowly. Crossing fingers.

Post subject:  Re: "Laser Rot" on Warner HD DVDs - a list

I found two Warner discs among my collection that are still working perfectly: A Scanner Darkly as well as Lady In The Water ( German ).

I think this is due to the fact that both discs are single layer discs.

Btw I own a Toshiba HD DVD ROM drive connected to my PC via a IDE-PCI Express adapter which allows me to check the size of a disc
and both discs are around 14 GB in size even though many sites including this website claim that A Scanner Darkly is a double layer ( 30 GB ) title.

Most of the HD DVD discs I had were replaced for free by Warner Home Video Germany. The others were not replaced because they were not German discs.

The ones I have left mostly do not work any longer however those titles still work ( I checked them today by playing each chapter ):

- A Scanner Darkly ( Single Layer )
- Les triplettes de Belleville ( Single Layer / French release )
- Le coeur des hommes ( Single Layer / French release )

- Clockwork Orange ( US release Double Layer / still works perfectly )
- The Fountain Combo Disc Double Layer ( still works perfectly which is great )

It seems some discs still play for some reason. THe others won't even load any longer.

The other discs I have left don't work:

- 300 UK ( won't even load neither on my HD DVD ROM driver nor on my Toshiba stand alone )
- Blood Diamond US ( won't even load neither on my HD DVD ROM driver nor on my Toshiba stand alone )
- Dog Day Afternoon US ( won't even load neither on my HD DVD ROM driver nor on my Toshiba stand alone )
- Casablanca US ( several chapters are not working )
- Letters From Iwo Jima US ( several chapters don't work / DVD side is working fine )

I bought my first Japanese Warner disc in Osaka yesterday - Space Cowboys.

The IFPI Code on the code clearly indicates the disc to be manufactured in Japan so I guess Japanese Warner titles are not affected by this issue

I bought close to EVERY US HD-DVD title before I figured out the rotting problem (I didn't even have an HDTV to watch them on when I started collecting!) I'm the one who started that thread on AVSForum, but I no longer post on that site because the jerk who moderates the TV section was deleting my posts about the problems with current broadcast TV, because they were offending people who work in that industry.

I had a working copy of Blood Diamond but tried to play it again recently and it now freezes up about 10 minutes in. Ordered another one and it won't load at all- I give up at this point.

Other titles that haven't been mentioned here that I've had problems with:
Cream Live at Royal Albert Hall (went through about 10 copies of that, finally got a good one)
Enron: Smartest Guys in the Room (this one is hard to find, went through 3 copies and all froze up)
One Last Thing (same as above)
The Host (glitches during main menu)
Pat Metheny: The Way Up (have several copies of this, problems are usually during the copyright warning, main menu or interview segment)

I have just returned from Asia and tested my Japanese Warner HD DVD of Space Cowboys. Of course it is perfect.

My Japanese HD DVDs of Apollo 13 and Twilight Samurai ( without English subs helas ) are perfect too.

I guess Made in Japan is truly quality with regards to Laserdisc and HD DVD manufacturing quality.

I got brand new HD-DVD of Aviator. It got choppy in the middle, I stopped watching and not sure about the rest of the movie.

Do I have a bad copy or did the manufacturer do a bad job?

HD-DVD has such a high rate of bad quality discs, its unbelievable they went into production with a quality like this. I got like 10 HD-DVDs and like 3 or 4 have issues or won't work
