HD-DVD has such a high rate of bad quality discs, its unbelievable they went into production with a quality like this. I got like 10 HD-DVDs and like 3 or 4 have issues or won't work I still wonder about this... Was SONY scheming something behind the scenes to give HD-DVD a bad reputation just in case the format would last a while longer? How are only discs pressed in USA affected. Reminds you of the SONY DADC horrors for LD, doesn't it? |

So far, it's only Warner HD-DVD's that give playback problems... All others still work fine here |

Warner's HD-DVDs were made by Cinram- they also did most titles for Eagle Rock and Magnolia. Technicolor made Universal and Paramount's discs, and those have had far fewer problems. |

To be fair, Technicolor is connected to Funai, so one would assume anything they made (aside from film) was schlocky. |

Its not just Warner discs on earlier firmwares a lot of universal discs also froze.when on the 4.0 firmware they work fine.its got to be firmware/machine/disc/storage/issues. Not sure about anyone else on here but i bought HD DVD more or less from day one.so most of my discs i bought on day of release i have over 250 all of which to the best of my knowledge work i don't believe i am that lucky not to have got at least one unplayable disc. Which brings up the issue of how people store discs i recently bought one of the smallville HD DVD box sets off USA eBay when it arrived despite the fact it was still brand new sealed when i opened it there was a horrible greasy texture not only over the disc surface but also all over the inside of the box needless to say none of the discs worked they just crashed the player I use an Toshiba HD-XE1. So having a look around the internet a number of people have made comments on this greasy texture and discs that have it not working but no one seems to know what is causing it. |

Was it Smallville Season 6? I've gotten multiple copies of that with failing discs, my season 5 (which wasn't issued on Blu-Ray and thus more desirable to collectors) is fine luckily. Kinda dumb show (Superman turned into a soap opera), but I wanted to have every HD-DVD title. Had problems also with the 4-disc "Nip/Tuck" set and the first of the 2 Sopranos sets. Disc 4 in my first set crashed in the middle, bought another sealed set and disc 4 was fine but disc 2 in that set was bad, so I just switched disc 4 out from the other set, kinda like I heard people had to do with some DiscoVision titles in order to get a complete set of playable discs! |

My Smallville Season 5 is fine, but yeah, my Season 6 has 2 or 3 episodes I can't watch because they just glitch out. |

I stopped believe the "bad storage" theory. I found a box of VHS that have been stored in a non-air conditioned room for 9 years, forgotten to collect all the dust and insects to play with, in an area where the weather today is expected to reach 39C/102F and humidity is 82%. They work fine. There was another compact cassettes stored in similar environment all worked. Most amazing, I have a bootlegged playstation 1 game disc from '97 (probably) that keeps popping back in my face every 3 to 4 years. I am not sure how this survived being around the house for so long. Badly scratched, I inserted in my macbook and I could read all the files! Then again, there are always those DVDs that you get from rental stores where the disc looks lightly scratched but would skip and freeze so badly. admin wrote: Why do you include the DVD2Blu link in your post? Finally watched Casablanca on hddvd US import. It is a dreaded release I hear/read. it works like a charm. No issues to report Played it on the Tosch hd-xa1 running 4.0 firmwire. I try avoiding warner hddvd discs when possible but some movies released are worth owning IMHO if they play errorfree |

I'll never learn... Got me ANOTHER EP-35 to give these machine a chance . I've had bad luck with these so this got me thinking (again) Would it be possible to finally own a working one? So far it's all good playing a "dreaded" Warner disc. A clockwork Orange is showing currently I never got me a perfect working Ep-35 to begin with. I have high hopes with this one... it played only four discs since new. Got it in mint condition from the original owner. hope to own a good working ep-35 unit now after all these similar type players that passed trough my hands. I love my American players since they'll play any disc so far but I miss the DD+ logo lighting up on the Marantz. the EP-35 has the bitstream thing so... Anyone else using an ep-35 around here? experiences? |

Based on all I've read here, is it even worth owning any Warner HDDVDs? There are a fair amount of movies I'd like to watch, and I can get them for next to nothing. It doesn't sound like they have a very good success rate. |

It doesn't sound like they have a very good success rate. I wouldn't do it anymore. Avoid warner in any case, they're European warner discs never gave me trouble but the imported onces.... They have a life of their own. One day working fine, the next day unplayable and about a week later they're working great until you reach the end of the movie. It's frustrating owning a disc that doesn't work. The players are getting older as we speak... Forget about maintaining one in the next coming years. Toshiba isn't that keen on repairing one of those. They dropped the whole thing like a brick. It's not like there are so many exlusive hddvd releases these days. It's all available on the latest "throw away" blu ray format. I sold more than 100 hddvd's last week. I was happy to see them Go since they weren't the kind of titles I would watch again anytime soon. I see blu ray discs with "older" titles popping up for cheap so it might be wiser to invest in the ones you want than the ones that are cheap. You'll end up with a whole bunch of ... "Junk titles" you don't want or need. Uhd blu ray is coming... Won' t be long before they are the standard. |

I actually just decided to throw my hat in the ring. Picked up an HD-DVD player for $26. A lot of the movies I don't want so I'll probably list them for $10 and see if they sell. It's the 360 add-on drive. |
