I got a HD DVD player (Toshiba HD-E1) which works perfectly fine for HD DVDs but I got a question.

Is this player, or is it possible to easly make this player, region free for regular DVD's?

I live in region 2 (Sweden) but I got some region 1 DVD's that I would like to play.

Thanks

Had a quick look and apparently you need region free firmware, stock firmware doesn't have region select.
After flashing the firmware, every time the player is turned on you may need to change the region depending on what disc you want to play. That is to say the region you select will reset when turning the unit off.

Thanks for the info!

I know my player is just 720p/1080i so I am wondering if I should look for a better HD DVD player for my HD DVD discs . However with this player I am yet to have any root issues or I am just lucky with my discs.

I am kind of worried what would happen if I update the firmware as requested in those forum posts, if I run out of luck. So far it read every disc I put in.

I could always get another regular DVD player for Region A I guess.

Any suggestions?

You can even mod most blu-ray players region free for DVDs. There's certainly no shortage of alternatives if you're afraid of bricking your HD-DVD player.

I absolutely love my Oppos for region free DVD playback. Just have to enter a code on the remote and it's smooth sailing.

I don't bother with DVD players now tbh.
There's a cheap brand (Laser) BD player that is region free DVD/BD out of the box (no codes required, just menu select) but I don't know if it's available in Europe.
It's available here in Australia (DVD PAL region 4, BD region B), our mains power is the same as the UK but we use a different plug/socket.
