And... I wanted to do a smooth/controlled migration but one of the 3 SSDs on the current server disagreed:

Sep 19 05:32:37 sd-115353 smartd[687]: Device: /dev/sdc [SAT], FAILED SMART self-check. BACK UP DATA NOW!
Sep 19 05:32:37 sd-115353 smartd[687]: Device: /dev/sdc [SAT], Failed SMART usage Attribute: 173 Wear_Leveling_Count.

And my server hosting services are having a promotion right now.

Currently: Intel® Xeon E3 1245v5 / 32 GB / 3 x 250 GB SSD / 300 Mbit/sec

For -11% on the monthly cost -- and no setup fee, assuming I sign up for 3 years -- I could upgrade to:

Possibly: Intel® Xeon E3 1245v5 / 64 GB / 3 x 500 GB SSD / 300 Mbit/sec

Considering my options...

Julien

Sounds like a great option to go for some more backend power!
I don‘t know about storage limitations, especially due to covers (hey you still have 7 cover mails from me waiting in your mailbox for almost three months now! ), but the chance to get some more RAM does sound great!

Cheers,
Markus

The 3-year commitment offer was a limited offer...

I ordered the upgraded server, and might use some of the savings to also purchase a fail-over IP.

This way, at the next server upgrade, the public IP won't have to change again!

False start.

The new server they assigned to me has the 3rd SSD in an even worse state (they are all nearly 5 years old in usage!).

Jumping to yet-another-server.

... just received the 2nd server!

RAM memtest86+ test PASS.
Extended offline SMART test on all 3 SSDs test PASS.

Now the long migration starts.

Hoping to get everything done within 3 weeks.

Are you expecting any downtime or performance issues during the migration?

Usually ~1 day at the very end when all systems re-converge.

Been juggling with work, travels and other unexpected things and I don't think the migration will happen in October, hopefully in November!

So far the new server has Email and Web servers up and running: http://sd-103051.dedibox.fr/

I'm slowly (painfully?) learning the differences between Debian 10 and 12, as well as PHP 5.6.40 and 8.2.

First mini-websites went OK with PHP 8.2 but I'm more concerned about LDDb (major code rework) and the forum -- a very old phpBB version that will NOT run on a newer PHP and will require a full upgrade.

Hopefully before Xmas :-)

Small update after nearly 1 month.

LDDb PHP display/database code is mostly upgraded to PHP8.2, I still need to make sure interacting with collection/wishlist/updates/orders do not his a fatal error along the way. That's maybe 80% done. I managed to fix the PHP errors on most of the plugins/contrib packages as well.

That's the good news.

Now for the bad news: phpBB forum is NOT compatible and requires a complete upgrade.

We are still running 3.0.14 released in May 2015...

3.0 support ended in 2017.
3.1 support ended end of 2017.
3.2 support ending in August this year.

Time for a complete upgrade to 3.3.x!

I might have to remove some functionalities we have today if not compatible anymore, but hopefully the goal is to keep things similar, if not identical, with new enhancements.

My sister's eShop running on this server will also need a complete PHP 8 upgrade, another round of headaches.

Crawling back to my geeky cave to keep working on this!

Julien
