Post subject:  Some changes coming to LDDb.com

Hello everyone!

I've been collecting feedbacks and comments for a few months from high volume sellers, users concerned about the current stream of account leaks happening around, shops users, etc.

Here are a few of the interesting comments I received:

  • A. Confusing expiring wishlist mechanism.
  • B. Can't contact the Seller via Private Messages(PM) because seller doesn't have a phpBB profile set up.
  • C. A group of (accepted) best offers + regular orders coming from a same buyer should be able to get consolidated into a single order to match the invoicing/grouping when shipping.

These 2 have been already improved:
  • A. Wishlist will not expire anymore, they can either be "Active" (forever, as long as the account isn't delete from lack of activity) and receive notifications or "Private" and be used only for tracking/comments/historical purpose.
Notifications will only offer you to turn a Wishlist private to stop receiving notifications about it.
  • B. Now the "<username> requests Seller's Rights" email will be sent to me via the Forum, making each new potential Shop owner automatically registered to receive PMs.

This one will be very soon (I finished writing the code, I'm in testing mode right now):
  • C. Minimum minimum 2 orders or accepted best offers coming from the the same buyer and still at "Waiting for Invoice" stage will be eligible to be folded in a single transaction. Email notification will be sent to both sides to confirm which previous separate orders were merged into a single one. Visually it's very simple. You may then consolidate previously consolidated orders as well, there is no limit. If an item or the whole consolidated order ends up cancelled, all items would go back to inventory either at the normal price (order) or at the un-discounted price (best offer).

Among the other questions I received:
  • 1. The "sliders" are not working great on phone or tablet.
  • 2. Too many personal information collected for no real practical purpose, I will trim down what is needed to setup an account and remove from the database the trimmed parts, in case this server/website ever gets fully hacked.
  • 3. When orders are eventually cancelled, everything is automatically restocked but sometimes it shouldn't (disc arrived damaged and was refunded, seller can't find it in stock, etc.)
  • 4. For high volume sellers, the transaction list over the years grow too long/too slow to load.
  • 5. Possibility to apply a temporary discount across a whole shop or a whop shop sub-category.
  • 6. Multiple pictures of a release (not only front and back nut also disc labels, inserts, box contents, etc.), the way Discogs handles it.
  • 7. Make LDDb.com 100% reachable via HTTPS to reach a higher security level.
  • 8. Add information to define, for AC3 and DTS LDs, which AC3 or DTS intro is used before the main feature (if any).
  • 9. [admin's idea] Upgrade old looking JPgraph graphics with more fancy HTML5 ones.
  • 10. [admin's idea] Put to rest the Flash-based iCover I wrote because Flash is becoming more and more of a security hazard and find an HTML5 replacement.
  • 11. [admin's idea] Rewrite the Email notifications to send visually more pleasant HTML notifications while keeping the text version as a backup.
  • 12. [admin's idea] The Shop Inventory badly needs a rewriting, actually editing straight from your Shop view is easier!
  • 13. [admin's idea] The underlying Debian 7 OS I'm using will reach out of life/support soon, I need to upgrade to Debian 8 and I know it will probably break some of the database/PHP/Forum code in the process. It's a scary upgrade for me on a single server (no rollback) so... I'll wait for a free 3-day week-end to plan for the worst :ugeek:
  • 14. [admin's idea] I know the page navigation no the feedbacks is broken for long lists, have to fix this.

Since I have limited spare time outside of work, let's turn this into a Poll and see which ones are more popular.

Feel free to post below to suggest new improvements.

Update for:

  • C. A group of (accepted) best offers + regular orders coming from a same buyer should be able to get consolidated into a single order to match the invoicing/grouping when shipping.

This is now coded, tested and pushed to the live website.

Hopefully it will go smoothly!

As much as I depend on, and appreciate this site...

When I work a new lot, I find the search function to operate strangely.
For instance, search and and you get titles with Anderson, band, wonderland, etc. If I deliberately add leading or trailing spaces I still get the same results. I can find no way to get 'finer' on common combinations. (Seems like very common words like fire, rain, man and such get similar results.)

I would also appreciate a search bar on title page that kept same category for next title on my lot, rather than 'wasting' that mouse move/click to get another search box. (I type ABC123 reference number, select LDs, enter to search, select which ABC123 is correct title, look at cover, data - and here have to go back twice, or lddb.com and reselect LD after data input.) I'm sure it seems petty, but in a 200 title lot, the extra strokes really add up, and I bet many of us work the same way). If I could be focused to search box, only enter next reference, hit enter, and autoselect next title (if only 1 existed) that would be sweet!

THX for listening

Hello!

Are you never using tabs? Using a single window for browsing is sure to make you travel back and forth quite a bit.

I usually do a search then open new tabs on titles I'm interested in, then close them when done and restart from the current search's tab.

For usual words, you can use the + and - operators to add or subtract words (aka Boolean query) you need or don't want included, have you tried that?

For example "rain' finds tons of hits but "rain +black" will only keep titles that have rain and black (no specific order needed).

Also the reference number in the title search is for convenience but you can't mix reference and title (so far) for searching.

Someone asks for another possible improvement:

  • 15. Possibility to accept best offers in bulk (for Sellers).

That would be a good companion to the order consolidation.

Maybe another one : See more than 12 LDs at sale on a page, preferably selectable like ebay?

Ability to share wishlist as a web page (as opposed to export).

Hello!

This one has been coming back from time to time, but I can't find a good reason why a public Wishlist would make anything easier.

The way I see it is to:

  • Receive notifications on titles I'm interested in. That's private.
  • Go to any shop (including the aggregated "global" one) and match my wishlist against it automatically. That's private too.
  • Wishlist interest as a whole will show (anonymously) on the item's stats for bids/asks so you know how many others are also interested.

What would a public wishlist fulfill exactly?

Indeed the 12 was arbitrary so it will fit in a bigger IFRAME without the need for a up/down slider on the side.

What I had in mind was to stop using IFRAME (static embedded contents) completely and move to full AJAX (= dynamic) list views.

This way I can make the views much more flexible with the screen adapting in size automatically. That could be tested with an improved inventory based on these principles but will require some substantial code rewriting.

I do a lot of trading. The LDDB wishlist is my "wishlist of record" that changes as I add or subtract items. When I dig up a goodie and offer it for trade, it would be a lot easier to provide a link to my "living" wishlist than to export and send it every time I offer a trade deal.

It could be the same code, just show or hide columns like Max$, Condition, Available based on whether the "authenticated" flag is set. Whether public wishlist is viewable can be set with a flag under account settings, so that if someone doesn't want a public wishlist they could opt to hide it altogether.

Hello!

Concerning the possibility to add multiple images to a release, I made one step in that direction to anticipate adding "Galleries" of pictures to navigate through:

And now testing to replace Fancybox v1 with Fancybox v2 to display gallery ahead in a more convenient way.

Still playing with multiple pictures, here is a working example:

Rush: Exit... Stage Left (1981) [VALJ-3274]

Could you tell me if the multiple "extra" pictures are working as expected for you and if they flow nicely?

Since Adobe Flash is going to be fully extinct soon, my little iCover App will have to follow the same path.
I tried to find HTML5/CSS/Javascript only similar coverflows but they just don't look very good and are visually very slow.

Trying a totally different approach by customizing this online example.

It could look like this:

The controls are a little jumpy with too many scrolling but I'm trying to tune it to my taste.
