A little more than 3 years ago I had to give up using a recently setup (less than a month) faulty DELL server to upgrade to a HP one in emergency:

LDDb.com will soon upgrade its hardware server - AGAIN

This time, no emergency but taking advantage of promotional offers, the server carrying the website will get an upgrade with 2x more memory, 2x more storage, a faster CPU and a long needed Debian 7  8 upgrade as well as PHP, SSL, phpBB, ZenCart, PHP accelerator, memory caches, and various changes/upgrades/improvements needed to keep things secured and maintainable.

I will be quite busy in the coming 10 days!

If everything go smoothly, you won't notice any difference. Hopefully! :ugeek:

Update:

Spent my whole week-end working on building the new server and I've been fighting some (expected) Debian 8 issues.

LDDb will remain running on the old server for another week, switching time should be next week-end (Jan 28-29).
I can't delay too much since, on Feb 1st, the old server will be wiped out and recycled. If I'm not ready, we'll be in trouble!

Thanks for your support!

For the technically inclined, the old server is a HP ProLiant DL120G7 and the new one will be a HP DL320e Gen8 v2.

Basically we're getting 2x more CPU MHz, CPU cores, CPU threads, memory, and storage.

I have moved most of the services except 2: LDDb.com and my sister's e-Shop.

I tried migrating LDDb today... but it failed (empty/blank pages).

We're back on the old server for now.

Investigation pending.

Migration completed!

Please open "bug reports" in the dedicated section if you have any problem not disappearing after a few hours.

More than 48h after the migration and after a few problems on the way, we are fully running on the new server.

I declare the migration a success!

Not much room for failure anyway, the previous server were already taken back and data wiped out yesterday.
While I was doing upgrades, this forum is now running version 3.0.14 (upgrading from 3.0.10).

And with 8 CPU cores and plenty of power available, I am running this little piece of software in the background with little impact on your daily use of the website:

Folding@home - What if you could share your computer power to help find a cure?

I think it's a better use of spare CPU cycles than minting bitcoins.
Hopefully it can contribute to fighting diseases!

Current project is Project 9032, Disease Type: Alzheimer's:

Quote:
Bryostatin is a marine natural product that shows promising and unique activity against several diseases (most notably, cancer, HIV/AIDS, and Alzheimer's). Its main target, protein kinase C (PKC), is a signaling protein central to many cellular functions. In its active form, PKC binds its ligand and is associated with the membrane, but we currently lack structural information about this complex in its membrane microenvironment. The simulations performed on FAH will help to provide a structure to the PKC-ligand-membrane complex. The structure and dynamics of this complex would allow us to understand bryostatin's binding mode and thus how to modify and tune its structure to improve function or even create new functions as needed for new therapies in the clinic.

About your decision to use the little software: congratulations, good idea!

Julien,

I don't think words can really say how grateful everyone is for all the personal time you put into this site. Thank you.
