Star Trek TNG/OS

US LD
Japanese LD
AU DVD
Blu-ray

Might be something I missed that exceeds; but doubtful!! Anyway will update if required...

Despite owning the BD's with magnificent PQ (and despite what zeta said), still very often enjoy watching these on LD.
It's just the DVD's have essentially become nice shelf pieces, thanks to the great AU packaging (afaik the US just got cardboard slipcases). Maybe I am a bit of a collectard, but I own LD's to watch them and regularly do. My 'collection' only becomes worthless when there's no working players to watch it on. Assuming (hoping) I'll be dead by then.....

Trek TNG feels most natural on LD. This is because I saw it all on SD cable originally.

Normally with individual films an effectively perfect BR can easily be made that moots all previous releases. If anyone has a problem with that then I will kindly refer you to the post I made earlier in the thread where I named six different versions of Royal Space Force that I own.

Since you can get the different versions of the film (Theatrical, Extended, Argento), this one actually calls for multiple buys!!

5x on LD - Elite Box, Image, Republic Pictures, Bandai Perfect Collection, Conclusion Box (which is really not worth what is being charged for it as it is just a replication of the Elite Box but with a Soundtrack CD)
2x on VHS - Republic Pictures, Anchor Bay/Video Treasures
1x on Betamax - HBO/Thorn EMI
2x on DVD - Anchor Bay Anniversary Edition (which appears to be the only way to get the movie in 1.66:1 AR), Anchor Bay Ultimate Box Set
2x on blu-ray - Anchor Bay/Starz, Arrow Video
2x on 4K - Midnight Factory Italian set, Second Sight UK set

Oh damn, that's another one I forgot about, but it still doesn't beat Robocop:

-Finnish VHS
-Finnish DVD
-Anchor Bay Ultimate Edition
-Second Sight Blu-Ray LE
-Second Sight UHD LE

Wait, that's five, how many Robocops did I own again? Also I actually got two copies of the SS BD LE because I was so worried about missing out that I pre-ordered it in multiple places and lost track of how many places I actually bought it from and I think I returned just one, but that still counts as number six doesn't it?

Exactly. VCD was basically the worst format ever and you already had the VHS but you bought it. The LDs were decades old and useless by the time you bought them. Most fans of The Godfather or Akira Kurosawa would never buy such things. That is, useless discs that will never be watched. That’s not really a movie fan thing it’s a collector thing. If you give most people a well done 1080p Blu-ray of their favorite movie they’ll likely be happy with it forever, freeing them up to buy the next movie. An official and well done 1080p BR of SW does not exist so you guys will buy everything else forever. It’s like getting the action figures. You want them ALL, even Lobot. Nobody who’s favorite movie is The Godfather wants a Lobot.

That's a lot of attitude about who's a movie fan and who isn't. Someone can't be a movie fan and also a collector surrounding something they enjoy?

I bought the VCDs in High School... I bet you never did anything dumb in High School, did you?

I bought the SE LD set in College prior to the official DVD release when I was getting more serious about Home Theater... I bet you didn't have any really niche interest in College, did you?

The Faces LDs are the only release I've bought for anything that would be considered "collecting"... they're for display, but only because it's the theme of the room. I'm not a collector... LD in general is as close as it gets and (except for those Faces LDs) I don't buy anything I don't watch, even if the bulk of the charm is just interest in the format.

I agree wholeheartedly. I usually don't hold on to technically superseded versions (even Star Wars, with the LDs being the exceptions... the VHS, VCD, and DVD are all long gone and the regular BDs are in my sell/trade pile). I sold off my entire 1000+ DVD collection nearly a decade ago and probably owned fewer than 30 BDs and 5 UHDs (having, for the most part, gone all streaming) prior to Covid. A lot of thrifting over the last year or so has my BD collection pushing ~300, HDDVD pushing ~50, and LD pushing ~50 as well, with 80%+ being from thrift costing ~$1-$3/disc.

It has lead me to a few duplicates that I'm holding on to (mostly both HDDVD/LD and either BD or UHD), but that's more for interest in the format than collecting multiple versions of the films themselves. If I replace a BD with UHD, the BD goes away... if the BD was a Steelbook, I might keep the case and put the UHD disc in it... I don't know many collectors that would do that. Heck, I can't stand slipcovers, OBIs, etc and throw them all away immediately. My percentage of physical disc viewing has jumped from 3-5% to probably close to 33%.

Brilliant film! I have it on Blu too. The USA Anniversary edition with the booklet in it.

I think it's the most complete version to date?

To the best of my knowledge yes.
Still under "searching for original film" status at SOCAL University.

Top notch effort at restoration !

Cheers

No, I mean that if he thinks that way about Lobot, a character who actually does stuff in the movie, I dread to imagine what he must think of all the blink-and-you'll-miss-it Cantina or Jabba's palace aliens that also have action figures. BoShek anyone?

Lobot is short for Lobotomized Robot. A meat puppet. That computer sticking out of his head just has him work on Cloud City for 70 hours a week. He can play Candy Crush in his head too but nothing else. On Saturday he gets to spend his entire paycheck on Star Wars crap, none of which he ever uses. In fact the storage locker he thinks he’s putting it all into is just an airlock, as soon as he closes the door its ejected outside. Then he goes into his recharging bay until Monday morning, to be repeated every week forever. The perfect fan.

Sounds like a Funko Pop collector.

Bet he's a moderator on Reddit, too.

I was going to ask if the LD is the full audio runtime with production stills in place of the missing film? That's the version I have on Vudu.

some serious redundancy to be had here, -so far as 1986's "ALIENS" goes-
but what the hell; it IS both a personal childhood favorite, as well as one of the finest films ever made, YMMV...

Just realized I have a couple of other more modern multi-buys that are definitely excessive, but also luckily the imports were on the cheap side (3D BDs from Zavi sales, Big Sleeves from US sellers that had already done the importing and seemingly had discounted excess stock).

Force Awakens
- BD
- 3D BD (domestic)
- Big Sleeve BD (import)
- UHD (individual retail)
- UHD (Skywalker Saga set)

Rogue One
- BD
- 3D BD (import)
- Big Sleeve BD (import)
- UHD

Black Panther
- BD
- 3D BD (import)
- Big Sleeve BD (import)
- 4K UHD

In general, this isn't really collecting (though Star Wars is a clear theme)... it's mostly buying the best format as it came along, with the 3D purchases coming while I was going through a re-assessment of 3D that didn't last very long. When I got the 3D BDs, the regular BDs got sold along. When I got the UHDs, I co-located the 3D discs into those cases (except for Force Awakens, it's in a pretty nice box. Also, getting a used copy of The Skywalker Saga UHD set was actually about the same price as getting just the EP 1-7 on UHD individually, even at the Black Friday sale price.

The Big Sleeve releases might fall into the "collecting" category, but for me personally they were really more "decorative". On top of my Disc/Projector shelf, I have a spot for display of 3 LDs/LPs/etc. I picked up the Rogue One and Force Awakens Big Sleeve BDs pretty cheap (around $12 each) with the intention of getting The Last Jedi as well, all for display on that shelf... unfortunately, I never was able to find The Last Jedi at a price I was comfortable paying so I ended up putting the Faces discs in that location instead.

Are these various pressings/mintings of each release? Were they actually sought out, or just acquired by happenstance in lots?

All are different in some manner. For example: Star Wars Episode VI
20th Century Fox Version - CLV
20th Century Fox Version - CAA
CBS/Fox CLV
CBS/Fox CAV
Several different editions from Japan, both CLV and CAV
Copies from Germany, France, England, Spain, Hong Kong, Etc.

I actually sought them out, based on findings on eBay and here on LDDB.

I'm still tracking down 1 edition of Titanic - Chinese Subtitles with gold discs...

That is some serious collecting. :D

My most releases are probably 6 versions of Terminator 2: Judgement day and The Thing.

I do have 5 releases of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice also. DVD, 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray ultimate edition, 4K, and the 4K imax re-release.

Other wise I do not double down very often.

I'm not sure about the version on Vudu but the anniversary Blu is the most complete known edition to date. It's highly likely the final few minutes will never be found, though never say never. I was lucky enough to see Metropolis with an orchestra during it's world tour after the last missing footage was found in Uruguay (or it may have been Argentina I forget) a few years ago. They said that would never be found!

Also don't forget Le Mans and the 1,000,000+ feet of film from it that was found buried underneath a soundstage a couple of years ago. There's always hope that Lost Horizon may be completed some day.

For now, this is the best and most complete version of Lost Horizon currently available (afaik):
